I went to the Sprint repair store to have this issue looked at and they said that they wouldn't give me a replacement for such a small issue. Also my phone was replaced by Insurance less than 30 days ago so the Sprint rep told me I have to deal with the Assurion.

I called Assurion and they told me that it was pressure damage and it would cost me a $50 deductible to get it replaced.

Is there a way around the deductible?

Interesting find today. I was unwraping a refurb TP today and was peeling the plastic that Sprint wraps the screen in off. As I was peeling I was looking at the screen and the pressure from pulling the plastic off caused the same colors that show when this problem happens. You'll have to excuse me because I don't know how the screens are constructed, but it appears that I was lifting two layers apart and when I did that you could see the oily look, however when I stopped peeling it went back to normal.

Also an FYI I am on my 4th replacement for this problem. The last phone I BABIED, it NEVER touched my pocket, never got dropped, always was in the stock case when being carried, and it still happened.

This is my third HTC designed device and all have had flaws that are/were all too common place (6700 -bluetooth, Mogul/6800- white spot, usb port, TP- oily spots, creaky battery cover). The return rate must be astounding on these devices and because HTC disavows any knowledge or responsibility of the issues, possibly a prime reason why the insurance deductibles are rising. I only have a TP because it was a replacement for my 5th failed Mogul. I think I'm done with HTC in general. They know how to design for the spec sheet, but not for reliability. When the time comes to buy a new device, not being designed and made by HTC has moved high up on my desirable features list.

I am definitely with you on this. Until we start voting with our dollars HTC will not change its ways. I almost feel like organizing a "Boycott HTC crap site".

Could you clarify what you mean by "the water mark wasn't set off" I have the same issue and just sent it in to HTC (PCD actually) and wondering if they will tell me I damaged the screen. Thanks

Lol, I just had this happen to my 3rd screen.
I have a friend at a service center that just gives me replacement sliders and screens, but the new one only lasted about 10 days before doing it.

I have a feeling that it's heat related. The center of the screen gets pretty hot, and the spot is always shaped like a rectangle.

the sprint store that used to replace my screens has now said discussions with HTC have led to it being a pressure problem, pushing on an oily substance too hard and causing to seep between the layers. and that we'll have to go thru asurion even though she knew i've had this problem replaced in store be4!!! wtf?!?

I'm willing to bet that what you were told was total BS. The "oily spots" aren't caused by oil being forced between layers. This is like the manager of one of Sprints repair centers telling me that they had received a memo blaming the Moguls white spot on magnetic case latches. It isn't caused by magnets and there was no memo. The manager made it up to look like he knew what he was talking about, which I discovered was actually very little. The store doesn't want to do anymore swaps, maybe just for you, maybe due to pressure to reduce returns in general. To appease you and look like they're more informed, instead of just saying "no", someone made a (semi) plausible lie.

Agreed, don't take that crap. There are not discussions with HTC, HTC or Sprint won't even acknowledge there is an issue. I spent a few hours yesterday attempting to discuss this with Sprint and HTC and got no where. HTC said they have no known issue reports as did Sprint. On another note Sprint's technical support gladly are sending me a replacement phone with no questions asked. Don't allow them to bully you. I am on my 4th replacement for this issue so it would seem I am doing something, however I am VERY careful with my device. It always is in the case and never has been abused. I do use it a lot, but that shouldn't be a problem. My wife on the other hand beats the crap out of her TP, throws it in her purse, drops it etc. and her original phone still works great.
