Technically it uses the 1X network, so yes it does.

So then how come you can't force the phone to use the 1X network and be on a phone call and surf the net at the same time? I thought texting used voice channels (just like when your on the phone you go into 1X mode).

You cannot be on the phone and surf the net unless you are connected to a wifi signal. Sprints network doesn't support voice and data at the same time.

I understand that...

I was merely responding to his response that it uses the 1X network.

Quick easy answer for why you cannot place a call and use data services at the same time: You have one radio. It's currently in use.

Texting travels over the IS-95/2000 voice channels, hence the ability to text while on a call.

Sweet, so I was right! Bryan 1, World 0. Lol, sorry...In a goofy mood tonight.

Thanks for confirming that vzwdts.

And for people wondering about IS-95:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IS-95 It's a good read.

Not true. The EVDO uses a different channel and radio. That is how your phone can be on Sprint for voice, and have EVDO on Altel (Go to Columbia, SC, and that will be the case.) It is also why a lot of Verizon has a signal indicator for EV and 1xrtt.

So it is possible!

There is a difference in IMing and Texting

This is how Sprint looks at IM/Text...dont know about Tmobile

The data plan which included text messaging which you are talking about is really "IMing", since in "Texting" you just need a cell signal and "IMing" you need a internet connection hence "data"

Texting falls under the Messaging Plan
IMing falls under Data Plan

in one respect you are right. Texting uses the same voice channel as phone calls, and that travels over the 1X voice channel, which is why you can text while youre on a call.

you are incorrect in saying that its not possible because we have one cellular radio and its in use. AGAIN, the EVDO rev 0/A network IS CAPABLE of simultaneous voice and data, AGAIN, its up to the carrier to enable the capability. If your theory were correct, explain how a 3G ATT device can do both at the same time?? Same basis, ONE RADIO, just two different types of cellular technology. GSM vs CDMA. Both are capable, GSM carriers chose to enable it, CDMA carriers have not.

And also, I agree the term "3G" is loosely thrown around. I get customers everyday who come in to our store asking for a 3G phone not even knowing what it is or is about.

Again, if there any doubters of whether or not CDMA networks running EVDO are capable of this, due you homework and research the technoloy!!
