So my best bet is just to brick the phone and taking it to the sprint store? Will unplugging the usb while flashing a new rom brick the phone?

not to be the bearer of bad news, but the insurance has changed and they do not cover physical damage in the store anymore. the good news is most of the stores do not know this yet. so if i were you i would get it into a store asap and be as nice to them as possible to get what you want. if you have a contact inside the store like a tech that knows you then the new insurance policy doesn't apply and they will order you one anyway. good luck. like i said most tech and reps will not know this yet anyway. this is just fyi.

Smashing it with a hammer or running it over with my car would look a little suspicious in my opinion. It'll look like I did it on purpose. If I purposely brick the phone, would they be able to fix it and give me back the same phone?

Trust me on this one. Just bring it in to any sprint store and tell them you dropped it and within 5 minutes they will be handing you your brand new TP.

If you crack the chrome on it, they will replace it free at the store, it's a known issue. Trust Me.
