I think there is a setting that makes the default kb the hardware one, check around your input or keyboard settings.

I did that, but in opera, say at google.com, when i touch in the search box with the hardware keyboard open, the on screen keyboard still opens on screen.

Yeah, that's what appears to be happening to me too... I remember a hack on the mogul where you put a skin of a clear keyboard or something along those lines, so when the keyboard popped up it was invisible.

Yeah "nullkb" is what you're talking about Sponge.
The problem lies in Opera, I guess they did all testing with a Diamond or something and just left it as-is. Pain in the arse

Makes sense, test about 70% of your product and not the whole thing.... I should be in charge of Beta testing for HTC, all this crap wouldn't fly with me!
