With all the requests to "clean house" on the stock ROMs, and also with a recognition that some people either can't or aren't ready to use a custom ROM (translation: business users and new users), I've put together an easily installed package that helps us trim the fat from the OEM customizations.

With that in mind, here are the instructions and guidelines for these packages. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY... I AM WILLING TO HELP WHEN THERE IS A PROBLEM, BUT IF YOU DON'T READ THE INFORMATION, I WON'T BE INCLINED TO REPEAT MYSELF. :)

Installing this will make several modifications to your Sprint* Touch Pro configuration to make it perform faster, have relatively stable battery life, and still provide a functional experience. DO NOT USE THIS PACKAGE ON A NON-SPRINT TOUCH PRO! If this thread is popular, and if I can get my hands on the variants, I may package them in the future.

NOTE #1: This will remove the shortcuts to all Sprint content, so if you really need those links, be sure to use the supplemental Restore Sprint Shortcuts package. That said, it is very much a "Sprint" configuration, so no specialized skins, etc. beyond what are documented below.

NOTE #2: There are four variations based on whether you prefer Large/Small Start Menu Icons and/or the Full/Light AudioPara Volume Increase, so feel free to use the one appropriate for your preferences.

NOTE #3: I will fix any issues with these packages, but I won't necessarily be adding any new features or skins. This is intended to provide as many of the "essentials" as possible without a lot of hassle. I also have limited time to work on these things, and well to be honest... if you want to go beyond the essentials, you should really be looking at Custom ROM development.

NOTE #4: Advanced users are more than welcome to edit the _setup.xml file within the cab files and continue customizing it as they see fit.

As I said before, I really consider this to be a Quick Essentials tool for those who aren't willing or aren't ready for ROM cooking.

UPDATE #1: I have posted the "tweaksonly" version that only changes the registry settings and leaves all the shortcuts alone.

-- Here is a list of the tweaks offered in the standard package...

----------------------------------
TouchFlo 3D Configuration Changes
----------------------------------

1. "SprintTV" tab removed.
2. "Sprint Music" tab renamed to "Music" and Sprint Music Store link removed.
3. Reconfigured default shorctus on the "Programs" tab.
4. Sets the TouchPanel sensitivity to 200.

---------------------------------
Start Menu Configuration Changes
---------------------------------

1. All shortcuts re-arranged for better organization (See important note and screenshot below).

2. Sprint program shortcuts removed. (See Supplemental Package "restore_sprint_shortcuts.cab" if you want to restore them to the "Sprint Mobile" folder as shown below).
3. Small Icons Used (see alternate versions if you like big icons).

Please pay attention to this part! The programs that come with the phone are moved to the Start Menu and are categorized into "Office Mobile, Windows Live Mobile, and Windows Mobile". Only the Sprint Shortcuts are deleted, which is why the cab file is included. Programs YOU install are left alone, and those are the programs you'll see in the "Recent" list. Here is a screenshot of how it appears with Large Icons enabled:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3236/...38bd9d2732.jpg

If this doesn't suit your tastes, no problem... just use the "TweaksOnly" version. :)

-----------------------------------
Control Panel Configuration Changes
-----------------------------------

1. Buttons-- Send Key Hold set to None; Up/Down Control set to Short/Fast
2. Input-- Word Completion Disabled; Voice Recording in Stereo
3. Today-- Today Timeout set to 1hour
4. Clock & Alarms-- Display Clock Always; Always Enable Alarms
5. Long Press End Key-- Lock Device
6. Microphone AGC-- Enabled
7. Power-- Backlight #3 on Battery, Full on AC; 2min, 3min, 10min Standby timers
8. Regional-- hh/mm/ss time display; MM/dd/yy date display
9. Screen-- ClearType Enabled; Text Size #4
10. TouchFLO-- All options disabled (a Supplemental Pack is provided)
11. Beams-- Disabled
12. USB to PC-- Use as Disk Drive Enabled as Default; Don't Prompt

------------------------------
Program Configuration Changes
------------------------------

1. Internet Explorer Optimized
2. Internet Sharing Enabled via Sprint rather than PAM
3. All Known Safe Power Management Registry Tweaks Enabled
4. GDI GlyphCache set to 32768
5. Security Prompts for Program Installs Disabled
6. Phone Services Improvements-- Location Off; All Roaming Tweaks Enabled
7. AudioPara3.csv (Loudest) bundled (see alternate versions if you prefer the light patch)
8. SMS Sent Notifications Disabled
9. Reply All function reset to Reply Only.
10. Filesystem cleaned up a bit-- Sample Images/Video/Songs Removed
11. Filesystem organized:
\Temp is universal Temp folder
\Pocket.IE is Internet Explorer Cache Folder
\Pocket.OL is Outlook Mail/Attachment Cache Folder

--------------
How to Install:
--------------

1. Save the file somewhere convenient, like your Desktop or My Documents.
2. Connect your phone to your computer using your USB cable.
3. When ActiveSync pops up, let it do its thing, and then click the "Explore" button on the toolbar.
4. Copy the file (drag and drop usually works best) to the phone. That said, I strongly recommend putting it on your storage card.
5. Disconnect the phone from the computer.
6. On the phone, go to Start > Programs > File Explorer.
7. Find the file on your storage card (or My Documents or wherever you put it).
8. Tap on the file to open the zip file... then tap on the cab inside... when prompted, tap Install. It will require you to do a soft reset when it finishes.

----------------
Troubleshooting:
----------------

If it doesn't work, read the instructions more thoroughly and try again. If the install doesn't work for some reason and reports that it cannot be installed, then chances are I mangled something in the _setup.xml file OR you have something on your phone already that the cab doesn't like. Keep in mind, I've only tested this on my phone which was just hard reset in order to make sure the installers worked.

If it doesn't work for you, let me know which file you used and I'll make sure the installer isn't broken. Beyond that, you're on your own to figure out if any programs you've installed are unhappy with the modifications.

A couple other comments... unfortunately, this cannot be uninstalled without a hard reset. There are too many registry and file changes to do so. HOWEVER, in the next couple days I'll try to build an additional cab that undoes everything in order to prevent hard resets.

---------------------------------------------
Why THIS configuration? Why THESE settings?
---------------------------------------------

I chose this configuration because for the past year, I've observed my own usage habits as well as the habits of about 20 people that I work with as well as a significant number of users here who frequently post looking for things of this nature. My goal is to provide an experience that is functional but lightweight and efficient. Every program is no more than 2-3 taps away, and the settings are set so that the Windows Mobile experience is as fast, power conservative, and finger friendly as possible.

Unbelievabley helpful and useful thread. Thanks alot...stuff like this is MUCH appreciated.

edit:I just uninstall the program and it's working again.. is there a option i can choose to which option to use

Just go to Start > Settings > Connections > USB to PC and switch it back to ActiveSync mode.

I'm finding that even in my own use, I still prefer ActiveSync mode too, so I may switch that setting back. I really thought I'd like the Mass Storage Mode better.

First of all, please do not swear at me. I don't take kindly to hostile comments.

Second, please be specific on what you would like explained, because there is a lot of very specific step-by-step information posted here, so if you read through it most of it will make sense. :)

Re: Touch Pro Cleanup (Sprint Edition)

Thanks for this bro, it's a very good cleanup. I installed the large icons one and am loving it. I noticed though that on TF3D, when you switch between tabs, there's a small delay for the content to appear. For example, if i hit my messages tab, usually the text appears instantaneously, but now theres like a 1 second delay.

I'm not complaining, but I thought i should point it out just in case ;)

CRAP! I installed this and now wher is my Sotrage Card? It isn't showing up in my File Explorer!!!!! I installed the big fancy all inclusive fix. Man......this sucks!

Ok, I uninstalled it and the Storage Card came back, but what the hell happened??????

It's a good idea, but I kinda need that Storage Card......

Re: Touch Pro Cleanup (Sprint Edition)

MaryGladys, shame on you for not reading the posts!! I just answered this a couple posts back! :p

The tweaks enable Mass Storage Card mode which means that while it's connected to the PC, you don't have access to the storage card on the phone... just disconnect it from the PC... OR... go back to Start > Settings > Connections > USB to PC > and switch it back to ActiveSync. :)

UPDATE: I reposted the packages so that they use ActiveSync again instead of Mass Storage, it was starting to annoy me too.

MaryGladys 11-14-2008 03:03 PM

Re: Touch Pro Cleanup (Sprint Edition)

Oh God, that TOTALLY freaked me out! Sorry, I panicked and didn't read. First impulse is uninstall and re-do. Ironically, I just did a hard reset and when I choose Mass Storage, it still doesn't show up on the TP when hooked up to my laptop. So, I was about to get up here and shamelessly beg for mercy :-). Many apologies. Thanks!

GoodThings2Life 11-14-2008 03:06 PM

Re: Touch Pro Cleanup (Sprint Edition)

No problem... I thought I would like that option turned on, since I store all my program installers on the memory card (don't need activesync that way), and since I usually just want to access the storage card from the PC when it is plugged in. But I've been doing a lot of testing lately and have needed it in ActiveSync mode far more than I expected for reg edits and access to the Windows folder.

Anyway, just download the package you prefer again, and it'll be fine this time. :)

Re: Touch Pro Cleanup (Sprint Edition)

Yeah, I use ActiveSync for my contacts and calendar. But definitely dig the Disk drive for copying over big chunks to my card. Eh well. Life's a tradeoff. Gonna re-dl now and install. THANKS!

anyway, I did this yesterday and did notice my phone is faster. thanks for the good work!

I only want to:

Change Sprint Music tab to just "Music"... I've already removed the banner.
Delete the Sprint TV Tab.

How do I do just these two things? Thanks,

Pretty easy to do those... if you want that without any other performance/battery tweaks, check out Post #2 in this thread:

MDL, if you want to start messing with the phone you better take the time to read up on everything, before you destroy it.

Asking for personal help is fine but don't get upset when no one accepts? They don't have to. Perhaps if you asked more maturely you may get someone to go out of their way to help :)

ActiveSync is the technology used to sync the phone with the computer. In Vista it was renamed to Mobile Device Center. When you connect your TouchPro to your computer, it recognizes it as either an ActiveSync device (default) or as Mass Storage device (in which your MicroSD card acts as a disk drive, just like connecting a USB flash drive).

Re: Touch Pro Cleanup (Sprint Edition)

Yeah, well... that's why I do this stuff... as an IT guy, I have to support this stuff for the "average" end user... the ones who recognize the potential of their device and know what they want but just need a few minor tweaks to really smooth out some of the rough edges.

Maybe I should get a job in Quality Control for HTC, lol.

Actually, that brings up a good point. I know that their people often troll these boards and XDA and others. I can't help but wonder why they never take some of these adjustments and make them standard in the first place.

Hey GT 2 L! You rock! Thanks for taking the time to put all of this together and making the TP better for us! Two quick questions: If I want to install the color changes too which should be done first, the colors or the original tweak cab? Second, I installed the original tweak cab about 3 days ago and I am having problems with opening email attachments, jpgs, pdf, and html. Is this a known hiccup or should I start looking at other issues?

Thanks again for all! ROCK ON!

Re: Touch Pro Cleanup (Sprint Edition)

Thanks for the good work goodthings2life. I am having one issue with the touchflo after installing the cleanup version with the large icons and audio tweak. when I use touchflo to access programs it freezes there. I did a hard reset and reinstalled and am still having the same issue. I did not come across anything in the thread about this and was hoping you might have some idea as to what is going on. I should mention that after the hard reset it was the 1st thing I put on so nothing should be interfering with it and that I did put it onto my device as opposed to the storage card.
Thanks in advance

Re: Touch Pro Cleanup (Sprint Edition)

eltoo,

Very odd... I've not had any other reports of that. Send me a PM with the following info... which file did you use (largeicons or largeicons_lightaudio)? Also, this is when you slide to the Programs tab using TouchFLO as opposed to Start > Programs, correct? Lastly, is this a freeze just in the interface, and Start is accessible or is this a full freeze that causes you to soft reset?

Well for me, i'm using the sprint_touchpro_cleanup.zip
I go to : Start --> Programs but nothing there, empty, just blank white screen.

Any info on this ?? thanks

I just realize that all the program goes under "Windows Mobile" is there anyway to keep it under Program shortcut ?

Yes, please read the first post more carefully... it even shows a screenshot, offers an explanation why, and an alternate tweaks only pack for those who prefer it. :)

Thanks Goodthings2life, i did read it but i might missed it a little :)
Also do you know the settings parameter for Keypad tones ? Long tones, short tones and off ?

when your dialpad is diplayed, then Menu --> Option --> under the ring option ?

is it the keypadmode ?

Thanks

I did a hard reset last night, and the first thing i installed was the cleanup cab. I have noticed today that when i push up and down on my volume buttons the first push brings up the menu adjust, but subsequent presses will just make it go away and not adjust the volume. I was wondering if this was a tweak that the cleanup did, or if it is something else i messed up :)

No worries. ;) I forget the exact registry spot for the dialpad tones, but I'm pretty sure it's in HKCU somewhere. I don't believe the setting is altered by my tweaks (at least they're not supposed to be and will be corrected if it is).

Definitely not my tweak causing that one... the only tweak I modify with that regard is to turn off the intercept screen, but I've been using that tweak since day one and I adjust volume all the time. Do you happen to use Advanced Config or Diamond Tweak by chance?

You will want to turn beams back on in Start > Settings > Connections > Beams. This is disabled to conserve battery life.

The hard reset was to get rid of the chaos Advanced Config caused, and I have been avoiding diamond config since people say there are issues on the Touch. There was only one or two other things I did that were late night installs that i shouldn't have done :) .. I'll track them down .. thanks! --Ryan

Re: Touch Pro Cleanup (Sprint Edition)

First off... THANK YOU for all of your work!.... Your tweaks are great. I have a question though. Would it be possible for you to make a version of the clean up that does not alter the AudioPara file? I have a Touch Pro with a Build Date of 11/01/08 and a have a little bit of the blown speaker sound. I am not sure if it's the AudioPara (I used Light with Large Menu) or that I have a defective phone. I see other people talking about the same issue but before I return the phone I wanted to see if the original AudioPara would be any better.

Thank you VERY much!!!!!
