Is it true that IMs used over the DATA connection..

are also text messages?

The guy at the store said so, but an online rep. said they're covered by data.

Someone needs to smack that store rep upside the head lol... no but seriously it should use only data unless for some reason you have it set to send you text message alerts for certain events (like new messages).

Re: Is it true that IMs used over the DATA connection..

there is a difference between Text and IMing

IMing is like Aol/MSN/Yahoo which will require a Data aka: "internet" or Wifi conection to do some IMing and if you connect without the DataService that will cost .03 per kb on the sprint network, which adds up pretty quick.

Messaging Service:
Text just needs a Cell phone signal...which uses 1X and if you dont have that service it is i think .20 cents to recieve/send.

Ah well that's good to know. The rep. had me scared since he was saying IM'ing is both data AND a text message for each IM sent. He also told me GPS was an added payment when apparently it isn't.

I feel so much more powerful with my Touch Pro now =D

Yea you need to watch out..lol....using the GPS's in the sky are free you are just paying for the service like Sprint Nav if that was what he was trying to sell you so he was kinda telling the truth..lol....but there are many software and freeware programs google maps/msn live..etc that take advantage of the GPS's floating in the sky.

Yeah, the OZ instant messenging app that is included with the sprint phone DOES use data + a text message for each message sent/received.

That's only that app though, other apps like Palringo only use data.

The store was right about that particular app, and you should watch your usage

Well for AIM I'm using AIM Mobile downloaded from their site, which I'm sure is ok. Although for Windows Live Messenger I'm using Windows Live Messenger that was included with the phone, but it's not the OZ app., so I'm guessing it's OK. The OZ app. didn't really work anyways.

Try "Slick" which uses DATA or if you have Wifi that is ok to, it is a pretty nice program .....just increase the fonts in the setting since it is really for a QVGA...the fonts looks alittle small on the VGA.

Re: Is it true that IMs used over the DATA connection..

OZ uses text messaging to cut down on power usage. Otherwise it would be connected to the internet the entire time. So instead it uses internet occasionally for connection and status info, and SMS for the individual messages. Other IM apps use only internet, but will kill your battery faster.
