Oil Slick appearance under fluorescent lighting on the touch pro
I just started noticing this problem yesterday. The guy in the original thread noticed it when he was an inpatient in a hospital and I am a doctor and I first noticed this while I was at work yesterday. Interesting the problem isn't apparent under sunlight or regular wattage bulbs, but under fluorescent lights, there's a big oil slick appearing square. This was a problem on the touches as well. Does anyone know the cause of this? It never was clearly answered in the thread below, but the suggestion of a leak in the LCD fluid seems plausible.

Re: Oil Slick appearance under fluorescent lighting on the touch pro
It's probably NOT a leak with the LCD screen. It's probably trapped humidity between one of the layers of the screen. it's made like a sandwich. Protective layer, digitizer layer, protective layer, glass sandwich with the LCD goop.
When your backlight (which generates a small amt of heat) warms up the ambient air inside the device, esp for folks who live in northern climates where it's cool out, that slight moisture has to go somewhere. It's usually NOT enough moisture to affect or damage electronics but it does play hell with layered screens and such. |
Re: Oil Slick appearance under fluorescent lighting on the touch pro
+1 on that. It should evaporate or at least decrease in appearance if you take battery out and leave phone under a hot light bulb. Try at your own risk though.

Re: Oil Slick appearance under fluorescent lighting on the touch pro
Um, I wouldn't put it under a hot light bulb. :) Esp NOT too close. the top several layers of the touch screen are rather "soft" plastic, and I surely don't want to speculate on the melting point of it.........

Re: Oil Slick appearance under fluorescent lighting on the touch pro
I have never tried this, but read it in lots of places. Try putting your phone in with a bag of rice for a several hours. I might draw the liquid right out for you. People do this when phones are wet all the time.

Re: Oil Slick appearance under fluorescent lighting on the touch pro
Yeah, I started noticing this problem within having my Touch Pro for a couple days. It's really annoying. Would getting another screen protector and switching the current one help? Or would the problem just come right back?

Had my HTC Touch Pro just replaced. I thought while I was waiting for my Sprite Restore I would see how other individuals made out in regards to this issue.

I am on my 5th TP now and only one has had the rainbow colored slick. That also happened to be the only one that I put a wet screen protector on. Even the alcohol won't totally dry under the screen protector - it's not made to breathe and let it evaporate. I just have a sneaking suspicion that it's screen protectors applied wet that cause it. |

I find the screen protector cheap insurance. It's easy to peel off and replace if something happens to it. The protector on it now has a pretty deep nick in it - something which would permanently deface the screen had the protector not been on there. No clue what caused it, as I've been extremely good to this phone, but it did show up. |
Re: Oil Slick appearance under fluorescent lighting on the touch pro
ya i can see this one spot in the middle of my phone if i look at the phone at an angle. If i touch the screen the liquid moves to where i touched while the middle of the liquid stays put. idk what it is or if what i just said made any sense at all haha

Re: Oil Slick appearance under fluorescent lighting on the touch pro
my tp2 is the same way. verizon said they wouldnt replace it because it had water damage. the little water indicator was red. the woman at the store said I must have used it in the shower. turns out it was the moisture coming from the can of compressed air I used to clean the dust out from under the battery cover.

Re: Oil Slick appearance under fluorescent lighting on the touch pro
sprint has replaced 4 moguls, 3 touches, and 2 touch pros for this exact problem. had the manager at my local store tell me it was water damage and not covered, one call to tech support and one to CS and I had a new phone in the mail the next day and the store had a new manager the next week. this is a serious, known issue with multiple HTC touchscreen phones and you should not have any problems getting your phone replaced.

Re: Oil Slick appearance under fluorescent lighting on the touch pro
Hmm canned air is moisture free unless you turn it upside down or at a sharp angle. Hence the reasoning behind using canned air on electronics instead of an air compressor. I have heard of ambient moisture in the air in certain parts of the coutry actually activating the moisture sensor. If you live in one of these regions I would recommend arguing that point with your carrier to get it taken care of. Also, I would think if you had water damage to the point of having moisture under the screen chances are there would be other things wrong with your phone as well. Just sayin... :-)

Re: Oil Slick appearance under fluorescent lighting on the touch pro
verizon customer service is terrible. I think I am just going to send it to HTC for repair. I am going to ask them if they can put on a new digitizer that doesnt have the verizon logo on top.
