The phone was all the way off? Like hold power until it says yes or no and pressed yes and it shut completely off?

Damned thing finally hard reset after about 100 attempts. I think the sequence of keys was important. I believe I did vol dwn, ent, then pwr.

Now we'll see if it fixes the volume issue.

Yep, the hard reset fixed the volume issue.
