Re: android on touch pro
This waiter at a sports bar yesterday had a G1 and I was playing with it...I pulled out the TP and let him test drive and he was very impressed and almost walked away with it...I subsequently would've thrown his G1 against a wall.
It's a cool little device, but definitely looked like T-Mobile dumbed down the capabilities of Android. |
Re: android on touch pro
the only thing good about it is the capacitive screen. if only we could have gotten on of those!

Re: android on touch pro
i would love to try android on the touch pro, just to see if it works good, if it doesnt you can always switch back :) i think the only problem they are having now at xda is drivers for each device within the phone. cool to see they actually got it to boot

Android for Pro
Does anyone know any info if this is ever gonna be ported over to the Pro? I know that the Touch has it and I have played with it... but I wish the new one from the G1 phone came over to us. I did play with it and I did like it a bit. At least get the google app from the G1 over her... the street view was nice and smooth. Thxs.

Re: Android for Pro
Hey, what's up man
Here's a link to the XDA-Developers Raphael Linux Wiki. (BTW, if you didn't know, the Touch Pro's HTC model name is the Raphael) As of 11-7-08, the Sprint Touch Pro has booted Android, but the colors are off, like running XP in 8-bit color mode. There are some smart people working on it though, so it's only a matter of time before we've got a working version. http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index...e=RaphaelLinux |
Re: Android for Pro
So let me ask you Nathan, if they get android running, does this mean better 3d acceleration for the phone?

Re: Android for Pro
Well, that all depends.
I believe the hardware is there. We really have to ask a couple of questions that may or may not be known to determine your answer: 1) Are the limitations we see with the TP due to hardware, or the Windows Mobile OS/UI ? (I would tend to think the latter) 2) Does/will Android utilize the hardware to the fullest? It's with this second question that I really think we find the answer. As you know already I'm sure, the Android OS is much flashier from a 3D standpoint than Windows Mobile. Evidence of this is the creation of TouchFlo 3D to try and catch up with the people that are tired of the WM OS not being flashy or finger-friendly. Also with Android, the OS is created out of the gate to do 3d rendering with OpenGL, which in my opinion SHOULD make a big difference once Android goes mainstream and we start to see more devices running it. As far as the Touch Pro goes, though, it's all up in the air. They're having to piece together code to utilize our hardware, which could be totally successful, or we could get to a point where we hit a wall, it's unknown at this point. One thing that keeps me hopeful though are the people that are working on it. They want Android on the TP as much as we all do, and I think if it's possible, they'll be able to do it. Now to my last point, Android was DESIGNED to run on a VGA screen. We have a VGA screen. It makes sense that almost all of the android apps would run natively on our TP, whereas there are a lot of WM apps out there that are designed for 320x240 resolution. Only time will tell what happens, but I'm optimistic. |
Re: Android for Pro
OMG! This is great news! If Android becomes reality for our Pros then this might even help the poor vzn pro users. Well... if and only if Android does not eat up ram like wm with tf3d. I see what you mean about 8bit colors. If they are that close thou it is looking very promising already! I will monitor xda from now on and update this thread on how thed Android project is going. I wish I new how to code, if I did I would put in alot of free hours on it too.m I am a 3d graphic modeler and do graphic design for a living..... but its useless for code. :(

The good thing about the RAM is that Android, if I remember correctly, uses much less RAM. Somewhere around 30MB I seem to remember, which is substantially less than WM. We had it running on the Titan for a while, but the problem with that was that you had to boot it from within WM, so the titan with its 20 MB free RAM was still able to boot it and use it to some degree. If they could get it to solely boot Android on the TP, even the vzw TP, it would easily run it IMO. |
Re: Android for Pro
So we wouldn't even need to flash our phones or anything? We could just run the program from wm!? That to me would be a nice option as I don't want to get rid of wm entirely.
