How do i get my gps to work ?

Hi ! I am new to ppcgeeks and I'm picking up on the easy stuff like adding games and stuff but I cannot get my gps to work. I am not really computer smart so I need some help. I am running rom version 2.01 . And another thing is my phone will not update itsself , I dont know what thats all about but it always says connection failed . Thanks alot and all advice will be appriciated .
