its not required, but its nice to have
you can just store all of you contacts on the sim card so whenever you hard reset or flash a new rom, you'll always have your contacts without having to back them up every time

and yes, its definately much cheaper to just buy a sim card from the country you're visiting than to use sprint while there.
I had a friend who went to India a while back with a world phone and just bought a sim card there for like $10 with a ton of minutes and unlimited free sms as well as unlimited data

I have a spare from when they sent me a replacement NIB unit. If anyone wants it, just pay postage and its yours :)
