orange backing question

I was with a friend of mine the other day who also has the tp2 on sprint and he had removed the orange backing. We were both running garmin on our phones comparing gps lag based on the tweaks we had each done. Either way after about 20 minutes of driving around comparing, I noticed his was noticeably cooler to the touch than mine. Rom/radio version on ours are identical, so he contributed it to the removal of the backing.
I personally love the look of the orange on gray and i don't want to remove the backing completely, so I am asking here if anyone knows if its possible/how to remove just the foam part of the backing and leave the orange? I look at the orange and it is perforated, so if the backing being gone really effects heat it shouldn't make much difference with just the orange there.
TIA
Troy
