Dyeing battery cover-(SPRINT) (Video of dyeing/removing orange backing)-UPDATED!

i was thinking about dying the backcover of my sprint tp2 cause recently i noticed that the oil from my hands has seeped into my cover and has added a yellowish tint to it

I'd be willing to do the LED soldering idea. I used to work for Hitachi & I can do really precise micro-soldering. If I had the supplies & knew exactly what to solder the LEDs to, I could definitely do it. The only problems would be making sure they have a uniform appearance when lit, and ensuring the strips fit comfortably under the battery cover. LEDs tend to cause 'bright spots' if they're not done just right. I'm thinking some sort of barrier or screen would be necessary to prevent glaring.

In the meantime, I'm thinking of dyeing my cover purple. I took out the mesh & tried to color it with a sharpie, but it didn't look good so I'm leaving it out. I had to do the redneck tape fix for the mute button. I couldn't so much as touch the back of it without it launching the program I have mapped to the mute button. On the plus side, my speakers are loud as crap now. I'm amazed at how loud & crisp they are.

i wouldnt do the led thing. too flashy and will make people try to gank my stuff.

Also its one more thing to watch out for lol.

Well I'm glad it worked out for you (the redneck fix lol) I could not believe how loud it got after I removed that on one of my TP's. you could probably go to the store & get one of those felt pads - and place it on the cover to make it a little more professional.

Sprint still not selling replacement or different colored battery covers yet on their site???

No they are not as of yet. I don't really see them doing that. This phone is oriented more towards business users who rarely care about the color. You can dye it any color with this tutorial, though.

Any ideas on how I go about *only* replacing the orange with purple. I don't want to dye the entire cover, just the mesh like grill inside the cover.. And if its possible, will it be hard to put the mesh back in?

Just dyeing the mesh would be pretty difficult. Removing & replacing it would not be easy, but it is possible. I would start by using a hair dryer to heat the adhesive and then gently pull back the mesh to avoid flexing it as much as you can. ONce you have removed it, clean off the adhesive, dye the mesh & use a light adhesive to replace it.


At some point I may try this with my other TP2.

Just wanted to provide an update on the black. I originally dyed the cover at the beginning of October last year. As of May 2, 2010 I can start to see a little fading in small spots (looks a dark purple) ...Seven months before I have to reapply the dye, and that is after heavy usage. Not too bad in my opinion.

I am interested in anyone else who has experienced the dye fading, and how much time has gone by since the dye job.

My dye barely lasted like 3 weeks and now it looks faded and ugly. It is wearing off into a light purple. Will post pics soon
