Re: Dyeing your battery cover-(SPRINT) Instructions (Pics of orange removed)

The Tape I was using was thin enough not to affect the speakerphone volume at all. It was something I was concerned about initially, but I found it did not effect the volume or clarity

Can you post a pic of the underside of the battery cover were the orange has been peeled off?

Thx in advance.

Re: Dyeing battery cover-(SPRINT) (Video of orange backing removed)

Wouldnt removing the orange backing leave the TP2 more susceptible to dust and pocket lint, and thus, potentially shortening the life of the device?

I am interested in trying this..purely for the sake of louder speaker volume, but im a little concerned about having all the [extra] open holes in the back of my phone.

SolApathy 10-09-2009 02:49 AM

Re: Dyeing battery cover-(SPRINT) (Video of orange backing removed)

The backing does not really provide enough water resistance to make a noticeable difference. You have to keep in mind there are plenty of other areas that are susceptible to moisture on the back of this phone. This includes; 2 speaker holes, mic hole, lanyard hole, stylus hole, 3.5mm jack, USB jack, and the volume buttons.

I thought the same, but at the same time I would think one of the benefits of doing this would be more ventilation for the device (when it runs hot) with more air holes opened, right?

I'm still debating on doing this also for the louder speaker volume benefit.

I have had no problems since removing mines. half the time i keep my pda in a small cloth pouch, the other half its directly in my pocket. i never noticed that the orange part was even covering the holes if it was i doubt completely any dust that was going to enter would have probably entered either way.as for speaker quality i hardly use it, i did it strickly for looks.

So, does the speaker have better quality or is it louder?

its hardly noticable to me, to be honest.

Re: Dyeing battery cover-(SPRINT) (Video of orange backing removed)

To me it seems a lot louder. I notice it more when the speaker is facing down (against a surface).

Using a blow dryer makes it a breeze to get off. When your done add a little piece of black electric tape to the upper part of the battery to fix the mute button and or sound of the button when holding, or just pushing it to hear the sound, like i did.

BROOKNAM 10-09-2009 02:49 PM

Re: Dyeing battery cover-(SPRINT) (Video of orange backing removed)

i never had any problems with the mute button or speaker after removing, i tried it just now to be certain. what exactly happened with yours?

SolApathy 10-09-2009 02:59 PM

Re: Dyeing battery cover-(SPRINT) (Video of orange backing removed)

The mute button becomes more sensitive after you remove the orange backing. I posted a fix in my initial post that I had already posted in another thread. Personally it does not bother me at all since the mute button only works when it's in speakerphone mode.

As an added bonus though, it does hold the battery in securely!

Good idea Savage- Added the comment to my video & the first page instructions!

whats the benefits on removing the cover ?

SolApathy 10-09-2009 03:41 PM

Re: Dyeing battery cover-(SPRINT) (Video of orange backing removed)

-No more orange
-Increased speaker volume
-Increased ventilation (limited benefit)

Ok folks...Thread updated with the process for dyeing the battery cover (with videos), including the orange insert! Just check out the first page for all the details. I hope this is helpful to everyone that is on the fence about dyeing the back cover.

Really does look nice, Does the Verizon Tp2 back work with Sprint? That would be nice if they were Interchangeable like the Snap/Hero?tp2 batteries are.

I believe they are interchangeable. There might be some minor differences though.

Here is a link to the Touch Pro "Official" thread on how to dye the battery cover on the original Touch Pro. (with over 1,000 posts)

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...&highlight=RIT

The only thing I do differently is place it in a bowl of ice filled water & rub it with a soft cloth until all the additional dye comes off. I have found this also helps with the initial smell.

This is a great process that I used with exceptional results on multiple covers. I am hoping that some people here will take the plunge & post pictures of their newly colored phones in here so we can see all the possibilities!

Here is a writeup another user did on my video:

http://pocketnow.com/tweaks-hacks/ht...video-tutorial

Here is a comparison shot of the Sprint TP 2 With & without the orange undercoating. I used my fingernail & a razor blade to remove the backing completely.

http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/3533/1001654w.th.jpg

EDIT: After removing the undercoating & using the speakerphone I noticed a marked difference in the loudness & clarity. Keep in mind this will increase the sensitivity of the mute button. Should not really matter though since it is only used when you have the device face down in speakerphone mode.

If the mute button bothers you:

Here is a redneck fix for your issue. Take a 1" piece of black tape. Fold it over on itself. Remove the battery, insert one edge of the take into the top of the battery housing. Re-seat the battery. This will cause the battery to shift just enough to fix the mute button issue, and prevent the battery falling out so easily. It does not effect thy dynamics of the case.

http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/4885/1001676a.th.jpg

Time to remove it on the other one!

Re: Dyeing battery cover-(SPRINT) (Video of dyeing/removing orange backing)-UPDATED!

I have no idea. I do remember someone posting on my "remove orange backing" video that it was the "most retarded thing they have seen anyone do, good job breaking it, why didn't you just dye it." I removed it because it had derogatory language & the post had no relevance to the video.

My initial tests with dyeing the the orange backing met with failure, but I was using another imitation of RIT (they did not have any available in my area). Once I got the RIT I found you can dye it if you leave it in at least 10 minutes.

Damn, I'd say OP has a great case for JUST replacing the orange backing with another color... I may switch mine to red or blue.

But better yet... anyone with some soldering skills brave enough to tap into the battery and run something like these?

I will give Likwid credit for originality on this one. Never seen a back cover with flashing LEDs. That is some bling!

Well Done OP. This is great for the community. Thx for sharing.
I personally will have a protective case for the tp2, therefore no dyes needed.

I did mines last night, and left it in for 15 min and it turned out great only thing is now the grill on the inside looks as if it has this army camo on it now, pretty cool looking but I thought that should go black also

Hmmm. It should go black. I had mine in for 10 minutes & you can see from the pictures it is solid black on the inside. Remember:

- it has to be right below boiling for it to adhere well.
- Moving it around a bit while it's in the dye helps to get it in all the crevices. This also insures no air bubbles are in the holes, preventing the dye from getting into the orange.

Glad you are enjoying your new cover. I am looking forward to some pics from everyone. I'm curious if anyone will try other colors :)

Anyone dyed their stylus, yet?
