Re: How To Find Sprint MSL

When I was activating my phone 2 weeks ago I casually asked the activation guy for the MSL during the programming. He gave it to me no questions asked.

Not to sound like a jerk, but this method is posted in several locations on PPCGeeks. Do we really need another one? lol

I just did a quick search in the TP2 forum and the only other thread I found on this subject was not as well written as this how to, so I've closed that thread and linked it to this one. Perhaps I've overlooked something, but if you see another thread that you feel needs to be moderated then just let one of us moderators know...

you can click http://www.ppcgeeks.com/forums/image...ons/report.gif to report any thread/post or just PM any of the mods and we'll take care of it ;-)

Also keep in mind, that each device has its own forum and some users do not frequent multiple forums, so while this information may be posted in lets say the touchpro forum, if someone just bought a TP2 as their first PPC device, they are NOT gonna look in the touchpro forum for info on how to obtain their MSL.

Not trying to sound like a jerk, but you can PM these concerns to us as well. Thanks!

MSL

(Master Subsidy Lock)
A numeric code (password) that prevents a user from accessing certain technical settings of a phone. It is specifically designed to prevent a phone from being reprogrammed to work with a different carrier (service provider).

This is what is usually meant when a phone is referred to as "locked". There are also "unlocked" phones that can be reprogrammed to work with a different carrier.

The reason for this system is the way phones are often sold. Many phones are sold below cost, (at a loss to the carrier,) with the expectation that the money will be recouped in the cost of the monthly service plan. The up-front loss that is later recouped is called a Subsidy.

For this to work financially for the carrier, the user must not buy the phone and then use it with a different carrier. The MSL makes that nearly impossible.

Unlocked phones are ususally much more expensive than locked phones, because there is no subsidy to offset the cost.

Im one of the crazy people who paid the full price for my sprint touch pro 2 almost $700 after tax... shouldnt mine already be unlocked?

I would have to say there is no way it cost sprint 700 to have the phone made and I believe it should be unlocked.

Maybe you don't have an online account at Sprint ?
If you do, simply navigate to your phone number and go to activate a new phone. If you put in the ESN of any sprint phone you get the MSL as well as MSID, etc, etc.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong

try to do an esn swap online while the phone is still activated on your account will give you an error. and also who wants to keep swapping devices. and for those who got the msl grabber to work are you using bafs or a different one. This was the only method i could find to work currently. and yes normally i click activate manually and then write it down this time i got the phone pre activated and i didnt feel like emailing or calling sprint. but hey when your out and about and wanna play with your phone and you have to sit on hold with sprint youll understand. of if your someone like me who has perks and discounts and worries anytime you call sprint they like to screw with your account.
