The only ones I have tried are Google Maps and CoPilot 8. Maybe it's because I don't change my device all that much, but I haven't had any problems with Copilot activation. I did switch devices and was able to deactivate on one and then activate on the other one with no problems.

Otherwise, I just wish it had text to speech. Supposedly coming soon for purchase, but not there yet.

It does have traffic but you have to pay $20 for the live services. Even then it just lists incidents and I haven't figured out if it will actually reroute you if it thinks there is a quicker way.

You can route from your contacts, which is nice, but there have been some addresses that it doesn't find but will if I enter it manually in the exact same format. The Live Searching for POI's seems to work well.

All in all, for $35 it gives me effective turn by turn navigation on my phone and I thing the interface is amazingly easy to use. However I am a light user as I already have GPS in my car, but it is sometimes easier to get it all ready ahead of time.

.

It would be VERY stupid except your info is completely wrong.

You certainly CAN do this with GarminXT, I have done it plenty of times.

You can plan any route you want & save the routes for later use.

Using Igo8 and works great on the TP2.

Here is a useful POI website I found to add more/custom POIs to your software.

I'm not sure about IGO, but you can easily "crack" Garmin to run from any mem card (I have it running from a 16 gig Sandisk). Once it is activated, that card is good to go from then on. You can reflash the phone, pull the card out & use it in another phone etc etc etc to your hearts content & it will keep on working with no hassle.

CoPilot on the other hand has the most irritating annoying activation setup I have ever used (& my copy is a legally purchased copy). Because of this, I would highly advise people NOT to buy this software. It checks your activation online every single time you start it & if you make even the tiniest change in the system it will come up as unactivated. The POS almost NEVER worked when I needed it to, I must have activated it 30 times. It got so aggravating I finally gave up on it & stayed with GarminXT & don't even install CoPilot anymore.....

The really annoying thing is, you are supposed to go through this whole procedure to deactivate it before you make any changes to your phone & then reactivate it again when you're done. Of course when you decide to flash to a new ROM, you have totally forgotten about this (or never knew it in the first place) so after the flash it refuses to reactivate the next time you attempt to run it (it thinks it's already activated on another system). Now, you're stuck emailing there tech support to have them manually fix the problem (& they get real snotty about it sometimes). At one point, they actually told me "if this happens again, you're out of luck -we won't activate it again" This after I paid $80 for the program.........

~John

I have CoPilot on my phone and I've never had these issues with activation that you are describing. Even when I had it on my Touch Pro and was flashing all the time it would re-activate just fine and I would only have to do it once. Now that I have my Touch Pro2 I had to send them an email because I didn't realize I had to deactivate prior to switching phones. But prior to that I only had to activate once after flashing each time.

Copilot 8 seems nice, what do you all recommend?

I am using iGuidance 2009. It has text to speech and the interface is quite simple. I tried iGO before and it was great as well.

Has anyone looked or tried Delorme?

Not that I have it on a TP2 as I'm still waiting for Verizon restock but I've used it on my Palm Tungston with a clip-on GPS and it at least works good although the maps are a bit old and there can be some incorrect data.

But on the up side you basically you use this via a desktop program first, figure out your trip and any alternative routes you would like then just upload the maps and trip and any special points you make for the trip so if its just local stuff your doing, it just all goes to the card.

So one, no need for a data or Wifi link so its rendering is probably pretty quick and uses no provider data amounts and two, no need to swap out the card.

As well you also could have as much or as little of the maps already on the device so you don't necessarily have to upload those if you already have them on there.

And the amount of space for the maps is only limited by the card. On the 1gig card on my tungsten can hold quite a bit.

Might be able to get a large amount of the US on a 16 gig.

I suppose if you we picked up by aliens in NYC and dropped in LA you'd be in trouble...but that hasn't happened to me in a while.

As well it has voice prompting and some other nice car millage/cost and stop features.

I don't think its the best of the best but it might be just the right thing for some.
