I think the idea is that it's pre-loading a lot of data that isn't necessarily going to be used by you that could be used for something else. If the data is in memory, I would think that the CPU has to keep track of what is there, so disabling it should also free up some CPU power, but I don't know about that. Here is the post that explains it a little. Otherwise, I have no idea what it pre-caches or how it determines what should be pre-cached and what shouldn't
