Can a regular Micro-B USB Cable be used to Charge and Sync?
1 Attachment(s)
I ordered some additional charge and sync cables for the TP2 from thepocketsolution.com and the cables look like ordinary Micro-B USB Cables. They fit in the TP2 connector, but the shape is off.
Is it safe to use this type of connector? Did I waste my money on buying a cable I already had? Here is a picture, thepocketsolution cable is on top, and the one that came with the phone is on the bottom. Thanks! |

Standard Micro-B usb cables charge for sure, but they don't sync, at least not on my linux system.

They indeed do. I haven't even opened the cord that came with the phone because i have so many others.

Re: Can a regular Micro-B USB Cable be used to Charge and Sync?
Here is what I experienced. Last night around 1:30am my phone alerted me that my battery was almost dead. I plugged it into my usb cable that came with my Mogul 2 years ago (it looks like the one from thepocketsolution). It did not sync and when I picked it up around 10:00 am it only had a 30% charge. Might just be my bad luck, but that is what happened to me. Now it is still charging on the wall charger that came with the TP2.

Re: Can a regular Micro-B USB Cable be used to Charge and Sync?
I have USB b cables that I bought at a dollar store that have never had problems charging, syncing or tethering. I started using them on my Mogul and the TP2 seems to be no different.
I have a bunch of car cigerette lighter USB adapters too, I just use a standard USB B cable and plug it in if I need to charge in the car. I also have wall adapters for the cigarette adapters. http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/8107/ac2dcx.jpg + http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/3573/usbcar.jpg + http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8143/product00065.jpg = Charge anywhere or anytime. |

I used my usb cable that came with my Apache to try it out and it connected to my system with WMDC just fine and started syncing/charging. I have a similar cable in my car that plugs into a 12V->USB adapter that charges my phone or any other USB device just fine as well.

Well I guess I may just need a new cable.

Re: Can a regular Micro-B USB Cable be used to Charge and Sync?
I believe the problem is that the USB connection can only put so many amps or mAmps over the connection from the PC, but a charger can put out more mAmps.
For my Mogul I have a charger that has both. When I get the TP2 I will probably take a hacksaw to this apparatus to make the TP2 fit, but I got it cheap on eBay. So probably will be out of Taiwan in a week or so.... I was wrong, it already exists for $13.99. Put "touch pro 2 charger" into eBay search. Bigger problem will be my car where I have a ProClip arrangement that dates from my 6600, took a year to get the right interface for the Mogul from them. The TP2 is "coming soon". I sent my contact there a query about expected dates. |

Not sure why so many are saying 'yes', but it's definitely NO. Micro-USB will NOT work with the TP2. You need Mini-USB (Type B).

Re: Can a regular Micro-B USB Cable be used to Charge and Sync?
I don't know the technical name for the type USB connecter, but the one that is very similar to the HTC one will plug into your phone. Here's the kicker. OUt of say 10 USB cables I have, some work perfect. Charges quick and will sync. A few won't sync at all, but will charge just fine. And the last few charges very very slow and won't sync at all. Go figure!!! I guess they are just cheap!

Re: Can a regular Micro-B USB Cable be used to Charge and Sync?
I use the one for my Harmony remote that is plugged into my HTPC for programming it. Charges the phone fine and invokes active sync so I can use mymoblier on my HTPC and subsequently my projected 720p 100" screen. :-) Oh glorious excess.

Will the retractable mini-USB Type B synch? or just charge? The wires look so thin, and it looks like there are only 2 wires. I assume the normal 5-pin has 5 wires so it would be thicker for synching?
This is the one I'm referring to http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-0-Retracta...item4149f0a6f9 Also see pic. Btw, the guy who said miniUSB (not microUSB) is right. |
Re: Can a regular Micro-B USB Cable be used to Charge and Sync?
All usb cables have 4 wires. 2 power 2 data. The retractable cable should work fine.

I have charged my TP2 on my PCs without problem as long as they are not in sleep mode. |
