Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
8notime and myself have been having quite a few problems with our VZW TP2's maintaing a 3G connection (not a data connection, but a 3G connection).
A little background.... It seems, regardless of signal strength (my office is 200 yards from a VZW tower), sometimes our TP2's drop to 1X and will not get back out of it and get back on 3G. I got my TP2 last Saturday and it's been great with the exception of this issue. Over the course of this week I've gotten stuck in 1X quite a few times. Some of the things we've done to try to correct it: Soft reset/Power cycle: Sometimes it fixes it, sometimes not *228 option 1: Sometimes it fixes it, sometimes not. Well yesterday I hit a point where nothing would get me back on 3G. With 4 full bars I could not get off 1X and was only pulling 135kbps down. So I decided to call VZW and after hearing a variety of excuses and speaking with 3 techs I finally got to someone who gave me a DMU reset... power cycled the phone and I was back on 3G. So that fixed it.... sort of. The problem I have now is that every other soft reset dumps me back into 1X and I can only get out of it by soft resetting again... On 3G, soft reset, back to 1X only, soft reset, back to 3G, soft reset, back to 1X, etc..... So any time I install a cab that requires it or I need to soft reset, I need to double reset to maintain 3G. Here's my question.... Is anyone else experiencing this type of issue with their VZW Touch Pro 2? And if you are.... did you have a hacked Sprint TP active on your account at some point? That seems to be the only common link between myself and 8notime (other than having TP2's). We both had hacked Sprint TP1's on our accounts so maybe that is still somehow messing with our provisioning. I sold my TP1 in August and used my Apache (6700) for about 5 weeks in between without any issue staying in EV/3G. So maybe this has something to do with it, maybe not. Maybe all VZW TP2's are affected, maybe not. So if you're having an issue like this, please post in the poll so we can see what's up... Update 10/12/09: Just to let everyone know, we've ruled out the hacked Sprint TP1 being on your account as having anything to do with this issue, so you can add the top two choices and the bottom two choices to a get a sense of the acutal poll results. So far it's about half and half of people experiencing the 1X stuck issue vs. not. Right now, there's no definitive information to suggest why some users get stuck and others may not. It appears that some Imagio users are also experiencing this issue so we may be looking at a real hardware problem with the radio IF the Imagio uses a different firmware. Right now we're waiting for the unlocker so we can start swapping radio firmwares to see if that helps. Many of us have reported this to VZW but little if no action has been taken. People have even gone into VZW stores to see Imagios and Ozones stuck in 1X (no TP2's are in store right now to check). See this post for a possible temporary solution though it's unproven as of this edit: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...22#post1228022 Update 11/7/09 Well, not really much to update. Unfortunately, it seems the unlocker and custom roms aren't having any effect on this issue. I personally have not flashed to another radio but someone in this thread said they did try an older Sprint radio and it had no effect either. I have flashed to MightyRom and I'm still stuck in 1X pretty often. I didn't expect just changing over to 6.5 to have any effect but who knows. Other than continually harrassing VZW about it, dunno what else we can do. More than half of the people responding to the poll say they have this issue so it's definitely not isolated and it's stayed about the same as more and more batches of TP2s have been released. Update 11/10/09 gbruyn is working with a specific tech and he asked if we could also contact him. Below is the info.... Can you put this information on the first page of your thread? Thanks! Verizon Users Getting Stuck in 1X --- PLEASE READ! For those of you who have the plaguing problem of your data connection dropping to 1X, I'm trying to spearhead this issue with Verizon and need your help. Everytime I open a ticket, it get's closed stating that it's a signal issue with a specific location. We all know that this is not the case. I finally have got ahold of a Tech supervisor who gave me all of his contact information so that we could ALL direct our issue to him. He would then get it elevated through the proper channels and then hopfully they can find a fix. It's my hope that we can all email or call him and explain our issue. He was very nice to work with on the phone and said he is dedicated to getting the problem resolved. I think he's looking at this from a global look rather than an isolated one like every other tech I've spoken to. Here is his contact information: Kevin Drakeford kevin.drakeford@verizonwireless.com 843-566-8600 EXT 1789 Charleston, SC Call Center Please email or call him with your information and make sure to inform him all of the steps that you've tried that have been unsuccessful (new phone, hard reset, etc etc). I will try and follow up with him later in the week. Msg here if you contacted him. Hopefully we can get this fixed and be left with just an awesome working phone! Update 11/18/09 I sent a long and detailed email to Kevin today. Hope to hear back from him soon. I let him know that there are quite a few of us having problems from all over the US so it's not isolated to me or my area. Of particular note, here's some other threads from around the area of people having issues. None are as robust as this one but it's out there. Thanks to grubyn for getting the word about Kevin out. http://forums.verizon.com/t5/PDA-Sma...o-2/m-p/108468 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=582641 http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/htc-t...-stuck-1x.html http://www.sskusers.com/support/showthread.php?t=176 Update 11/19/09 froader emailed customer service and got a response saying 'it's a known issue, we're sending you a replacement'. Hard to say if that's the case or not as many replacements people have received have exhibited the same issue. I guess we'll have to wait and see if his replacement is any different. A few others have also emailed so we'll see what they say. http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.p...94&postcount=4 Update 11/25/09 Just to update this in case anyone is subbed and not regularly checking PPC. We still don't know what the issue is. I had a refurb come in with an August build date, same as my original, didn't even try it. It was in poor condition so I'm sending it back. Some folks with early November build dates are still having the problem so no hardware/software changes have been made by Verizon. As far as I know, no one has heard back from Kevin. Not to say he's not passing our info along but I would hope he could have replied to one of us. Even to just say piss off. Ugh. UPDATE 2/9/10 If anybody is still having this problem, update to radio 2.23. I've had zero problems since then. Still on my launch day phone. |
Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
I had the same issue on day one (two days ago with VZ TP2) and a *228, option 1 had no effect but a second attempt about 30 minutes later got me back on 3G since, even with multiple soft resets. When it was acting up, I was within visual site of a tower with full signal strength. Went for a drive around my house and saw the 1X icon briefly switch to 3G and the number of bars drop to 1 then it switched back to 1X with a full signal. So far, I've not seen it drop back to 1X.
Edit: And, no, never had a hacked Sprint TP1 on VZ. |
Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
Yeah it's totally weird how this happens. I've had it happen without doing a soft reset & if I go to ##DEBUG and hit talk, I can see in the HDR screen that AN/AAA is not authenticated. Instead there are a bunch of ##-##-##-##-##'s. It definitely not a tower or signal issue. I have both an aircard and another Verizon phone within reach getting EV and I'm in a strong coverage area.

Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
I had this problem yesterday. Tried a soft reset, but that did not work. Then tried *228 option 1, and got my 3G back after a soft reset. I have had no problems since then. I also had a Sprint TP1 on VZW.

Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
It's happening on Sprint too, although not as bad. I notice that the phone pops into 1x mode a couple of times a day, then pops back to EV a few minutes later. I wonder if it's a defect with the phone?

Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
Not having any issues that I've noticed here.

Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
I can say that at this time (knock on wood) I am not experiencing this problem. I have gone to 1x in an area where I would expect (back road with lots of overhead power lines). Every time I look at my screen is is in 3G, unless of course I am on a call.

Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
I'm not sure if this is hardware or software at this point. Interesting.

I had a Sprint Touch Pro on Verizon and switched to a Verizon Touch Pro 2, no problems here.

Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
I don't have a TP2 yet, but I do live in a rural area with great EV most of the time, but lately my 1x pops on and when it does I find that ActiveStync has just started running. I will stop t e process, then after about 2 or 3 min. It will go back to EV. I think it has something to do with the Altel thing.

Wirelessly posted (XV6875 Opera/9.50 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en))
mine is always in 3G it drops to 1X during phone call and the second it takes to send SMS. all of my vzw devices have maintained a consistant EV connection (Samsung SCH-i730 WM2003/WM5 and LG VX9900 dumbphone and Blackberry Storm 9530 and TP2) so i am thinking it may be an issue due to the other touch pro. i would try to switch to a non data plan phone for 1 day then back to your touch pro 2 with data plan to see if it was a provisioning issue left over from the sprint touch pro. |
Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
No I haven't had a hacked sprint TP1 on my account. Yes I am having the 1x issue. I called them last night to troubleshoot this and they messed my phone up and it took 3 hours to even get it working again. What they said ( whether its true or not ) is that voice doesn't use the 3G network because it doesn't need to waste that bandwith and the phone is PROPERLY showing you the 1X. I of course don't believe this because my voice calls right now sound like crap and my TP1 is working much better in the same house. As well as my fiance's Omnia and our sons Moto Q.

Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
is there a program you can run, other then FieldTrial.exe, that will log your signal strength in -db?
As i see it this is the only way to "accurately" compare the signal strengths from one soft reset to another to ensure its not just doing a placebo effect. As for myself, i have noticed that i see the 1X icon a lot more on the TP2 then i got using the TP and the 6800 in the same locations. But i have not noticed any dropped calls, poor audio quality, or dropped/slow data connections. I did notice under the Phone->Settings there is an option to change from Global to CDMA Only and GSM Only. Have you guys played with this setting at all? |

Yes I tried just using the CDMA only setting, had no effect. |

It is true that voice and text messages only use 1X, so that is normal when that happens. Constantly staying in 1X when you're in a 3G area, surfing the web, etc... is NOT normal. |

Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
So judging by the poll, it seems about half and half with people having issues and others not having issues. And then of those having the issue, half had a hacked Sprint TP1. But since others are having this issue that never had a Sprint TP1, I'm beginning to think that has nothing to do with it.
So far, I'm still in 3G after the DMU reset... it's just this every other soft-reset issue for me. Just weird. |
Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
It happened again this morning for over an hour. This time a *228 did not fix it. After several soft resets, I decided to do a full backup, and then do a hard reset to see if that would fix it; however, it started working again after the backup/soft reset. I am very close to a tower, and normally get a solid 3 bars (3G) from this location. This is getting frustrating. Once I had data working on my Sprint TP1 on VZW, I never had this problem! Of course getting data working was the problem...HAHA!!! :)

Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
It just happened again. Tried two soft resets, but that did not help. Then I turned it OFF. Waited for about 2 minutes, and turned it back on. 3G came back to life; however, I really have no idea if that did anything. :???:
Edit: Forgot to mention I am in the same location I have been in all day (3 Bars/3G). |
Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
Well I just reset and lo and behold, I'm holding 3G. Instead of doing my normal soft-reset this time, I fully powered down via the end key and waited about 30 seconds before powering back up. Hopefully it will stick.
How is everyone soft-resetting? Reset button? Software cab? End key? Maybe that has something to do with it. Maybe the full shut-down and waiting a bit to turn back on does something. |

Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
This is definitely NOT a signal issue or lack of 3G coverage. Let me give an example. I drove from Seattle to Portland and had 3G coverage the entire way there and the following day. I then boarded a flight from Portland to Seattle and when I landed in Seattle, I powered up my phone and all I could get was a 1X signal. I waited almost an hour for it to pick up 3G and when it didn't I finally did a *228 option 1 to reprogram. When the programming was complete, the phone rebooted and I had a solid 3G connection. When I woke up the next morning my phone was stuck back on a 1X connection. Again I did a *228 and got it back. A few hours later I drove across town, and it reverted back to 1X. I had my laptop with a Verizon aircard with me and it had a solid 3G signal. About an hour later I reprogrammed again and got it back. The image below (IP address edited), is what you should see in field trial if everything is good. It will say 1=Authenticated and you will have an IP address. The HDR session state should be 4=Open State. If these fields say anything else, you are failing to establish an EVDO session.
I did do a hard reset last night and have been in 3G ever since. I'll report back later. http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/i...0918141620.png |

Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
As you've noticed when you are stuck on 1x you are failing AAA authentication preventing a mobile IP connection. Sometimes an old phone still programed with your number and powered on can mess with authentication. It sounds unlikely that applies here though, dropping authentication upon power up/down sounds like something that might need a maintenance release.

Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
Same issue here. No signal issues, etc. Have tried soft reset and END reset. Sometimes it comes back and sometimes not. *228 had no effect for me any time so far. Have been stationary with the phone so not a location issue I think.

Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
I also had a Sprint Touch Pro on Verizon. I must say, that I have had a much more consistent Data connection since upgrading to the Touch Pro 2. Maybe it's just pure dumb luck, however, having a Sprint phone previously, seems to have had zero negative impact on my current devices reception.
I even get a signal in places now, where I did not at all before! Sounds like a hard reset may be in order to correct that issue. Surely there may be a less destructive way though, for those with this issue. |
Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
I maintain a constant 3G connection except when on a call. I assume thats normal

Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
Well I had another episode over the weekend on Saturday night. Was using my phone for a bit, all was normal, went back to it later and noticed I was only in 1X. Tried soft-resetting and long end key resetting but could not get 3G back. I checked my wife's pos Q and it had 2 EV bars so it wasn't a tower issue. It was late in the evening so I decide to leave it on overnight in 1X. Still in 1X in the morning. I reset then and I had 3G back. That fact that it's so intermittent and that at certain times certain 'remedies' will work and at other times they won't is just weird.
8 let us know if you hear back from them about the trouble ticket. The poll still seems about half and half with people having issues. |
Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
I am having the same issue (and never been with sprint). I started a thread here:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=84993 i have talked with tier 2 and tier 3; performed several hard resets; re-programmed (*228 option 1); updated towers and firmware (*228 option 2). usually, some combination results in an apparent solution, only to revert by to 1x. John |
Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
One other thing 8, I DID have 1 = Authenticated but was still stuck in 1X. It was interesting...
I got into the HDR viewer and noticed I just had the numbers 221= 221 = 221, etc... and as I'm sitting there looking at all the settings it just spontaneously switched to 1 = Authenticated. I check back up top and it's still 1X so I thought maybe if I surfed a little (like you had to with the Sprint TP1) it would then get back into 3G. Nope, never did. So I soft-reset to see if that had an effect, nope. Got back into HDR and notice I have the numbers back but now they're 331 = 331 = 331 = 331 etc... and AGAIN it changes to say 1 = Authenticated. Still couldn't get back into 3G. Thought that was weird. Finally did get it back hours and many resets later. So the fact that I had 1 = Authenticated but was still stuck in 1X.... seems to suggest to me there is definitely a hardware/software issue with the phone and that network authentication is not the problem (not the main one anyway). |
Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
Count me in as one who has this issue from time to time as well. Hopefully there's a simple fix, or this phone might be going back before the 30 days.

Just curious if you guys have gone into your network settings and re-entered your username, password, etc. Verizon= 10digitnumber @ vzw3g.com and then vzw for password. Sometimes just simply re-entering that information is enough to kick things back in.?!

On this phone all of those fields should be blank. It uses the username and password setting in EPST to authenticate to the network. I'm thinking my issue is fixed. I've been good now since Friday night. |
Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
Correct, it uses the settings from EPST. However, entering them in where I mentioned, will push through and update it. The settings will change, however, it will always appear blank, every time you check them.
Just a suggestion. |

Re: Are you having trouble staying in 3G (getting stuck in 1X), VZW TP2 folks?
No problem, I know it has helped me in the past, when I had connection issues on previous WinMo devices. Just thought It's worth a shot. I know how frustrating it can be to bounce in and out of a usable data connection.
Glad to hear yours has been doing better without doing this, hope it stays strong for you. |
