Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
I want to get the touch pro 2 for sprint but is it possible to use a international sim card in the phone?
|
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
According to the sprint website the Touch Pro2 will be international capable and has a sim card.
Sprint Worldwide Service Before you travel, contact Sprint to enable Sprint Worldwide international services. For a complete list of countries and Sprint Worldwide coverage areas where you can use this phone, visit sprint.com/sww. |
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
That link, typical Sprint, isnt really very helpful or detailed, but it certainly makes it appear as if you'll be limited to their specific partners and rates.
Obviously its not in their best interests to overexplain this but the only way this is realllly useful is if I can use any SIM that I buy in whatever country I happen to be in for flat-rate per-minute pricing. If we cant do that then its still a much better deal to just buy a cheap unlocked GSM phone and buy your SIMs from Telestial or in-country. |

Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
call sprint international 888 226 7212
they said they can unlock the phone so you can use any sim card you want. Don't have a TP2 to do it myself (unfortunately), let us know if it works out, (I also want to do it when I can afford it) |
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
i just want to know if will work before I buy this phone
|
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
Well according to Sprint, the TP 2 IS subsidy lock free EXCEPT the US-GSM carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile).
I'm going to China in 2 weeks and have a SIM card that I can use (China Telecom) so, if it works without asking me for a unlock code then we know it's unlocked EXCEPT US-GSM carriers. |
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
i dont think there is a partnership... if u look into sprint international stuff... sprint has a gsm network overseas apparently... the service says " where sprint gsm is available".. maybe it is select partners and its just worded that way, but it leaves it up for speculation youd think...
i dont know why it wouldnt work... if a feature their marketing the phone with even... but if sprint gets their way, it wont be usuable without notifying them first... which i think they have to right to dictate how or who you use it with.. **edit** so i found this tmo phone like 6 months ago on top of an air pump at the gas station... it wouldnt power up... i threw the sim in my Sprint TP2, and it loaded the contacts up... all are Hispanic names...and most of the numbers are +011 numbers... even all the txt messages that loaded are all in spanish... that led me to belive it was an international sim, since he was obviously calling and txting mexico very very often... no luck though.. he obviously was using it here... but wont work with sprint... didnt really expect it to though |

FCC had a document out regulating that the CDMA/GSM hybrid Touch Pro 2s being sold in the States MUST have the competitor GSM networks locked out, even though the phone does NOT have a subsidy lock present. I just called and chatted with Sprint, and I asked them regarding this subject matter. All they are telling me is that, the Sprint's TP2 does NOT have a subsidy lock EXCEPT to the US-GSM carriers due to FCC regulations, and you CAN choose which-ever GSM provider you want to use as long as they are not US-based. You have a choice, either you can use Sprint's SIM card for roaming in the countries that has agreement between the local GSM carriers and Sprint for a much higher rate but keep your same phone number; OR, you can use a local SIM card from wherever you are going as long as it's NOT an US-based GSM provider's SIM. It won't ask you for an unlock code, let's just put this way. |
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
Did they remove the 850/1900 GSM bands completely or is it locked to not accept ATT and Tmobile sims?
|
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country

They locked out ALL US-Based GSM carriers such as AT&T and T-Mobile SIM cards. |
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
great info!
|
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
do you think it would be technically possible to unlock the phone for t mobile and att. You never know!

Once we figure that out, it won't be hard to do. But hey, first thing first, the Unlocker. |

Thing is, it never does ask you for an unlock code, like others mentioned under Settings -> Personal -> Security. If you go there it simply says "This phone is SIM unlocked." There are just no place for you to even put in an unlock code. It's the FCC regulation as I mentioned earlier to lock the GSM down for the States. However I've talked with many Sprint reps even couple Tier 2s, all they are saying is that it has NO SUBSIDY lock EXCEPT US-GSM Carriers. |
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
I have a T-Mobile SIM with a UK number I use when I travel to B'Ham England. I popped it in but wouldn't register. Probably because it is on the US T-Mobile network. It wouldn't even locate a carrier in GSM mode.

In the States? It will lock the GSM part out. |
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
Then let us know when you come back from China. I can wait:p Most of all, if their reps said it's not locked for GSMs out of US, it should be like that.
|
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
I tried both T-mobile and ATT sim card, it did not work, phone could not lock into the network. I don't know whether the TP2 need to be unlocked first before we can use GSM service.

Why? Because FCC told them to. |
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
Stevedusa, also when you're outside of the country, can you confirm for us that the Touch Pro 2 GPS works when away from US cell signals?
We were able to confirm the Touch Pro has fully working stand alone GPS using a method like this. That application NoniGPSPlot is now up to v2.80. If you could confirm being able to use NoniGPSPlot v2.80 or any other stand alone GPS app outside the USA on your Spint Touch Pro 2 when WiFi is off, that would be great. |
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
Don't forget the phone settings has a network selection. You can choose GSM only, CDMA only or Global. I imagine you need to have it on Global for both to work.
|
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
US GSM carriers use different bands than Foreign GSM carriers. That is why you couldn't get a lock with AT&T or T-Mobile

I will try both the non-US SIM OUTSIDE of the States AND the GPS once I arrive in Canton, China in two weeks, will report back. |
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
I thought you can just buy a prepaid SIM card when you are in other country and put it in your TP2 and it should work.
Can anyone confirm? |

I will test it in two weeks, going to China with a China Telecom Prepaid SIM. |
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
Steved, I cant wait to see this, how much would it cost to change your departure date? :)
|
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
Steved, I also eagerly and keenly await your experiment result with the SIM card in China, as I really want to get a Sprint TP2 for use with Vodafone Australia.

Let me be honest to you, those things doesn't exist lol. They looks good on the packaging but as soon as you open it up, it's nothing but an empty shell with just the USB plug and an empty gut. They do that to foreigners, trust me, I'm native Chinese so yeah... trust me on this one lol. As for the International traveling, I thought I posted it somewhere regarding this subject matter... oh yes, here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=88356 |
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
So has anyone really/actually take their TP2 oversea yet and put in a local SIM and it works?
Is it true this phone also doesnt support international 3g? Is 3g like EVDO Rev A ? Higher speed? So this phone doesnt support high speed internet? |
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
i'm currently using Sprint TP2 in GSM mode with Vodafone in Australia and it works, data access in HSDPA mode is about 500kBps download. in Settings/personal/Security it shows 'your phone is SIM unlocked'.
|
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
So you can buy a oversea SIM card with some data package like 2 MB and you can tether to your laptop and get some high speed internet?
|
Re: Using sprint Touch pro 2 in different country
yes the phone works with the voda SIM card, outside USA and as long as the network provides data service you will be able to tether you laptop to internet, i did it via bluetooth. first you pair them up then from the TP2, program/internet sharing, click connect then you should have a new network connection, DHCP assigned by your phone, and gateway will be your phone, whose ip address is 192.168.0.1
