New Telus TP2 .. gps not working ?
 

Finally !! I received my Telus TP2 !

The first thing I tried is the GPS. I installed google maps but the it never finds any satellites... What's wrong with my tp2 ?

I think there is a program you are supposed to run 1st, can't remember the name, something like GPSGate

Need to enable GPS assist in the registry. Do a search on Advance Config or check out my post about must have applications.

did you turn "location" on? also did you run QuickGPS first?

Don't loose your marbles yet. Try it a couple more times, try runing Live Search (Track Me Using GPS). Put the phone by a window and leave it. The first time I tried tried the GPS, I think it took anywhere from three to five minutes to lock. It does lock a lot faster now

I looked for QuickGPS but I didn't find any version for the TP2. Where can I get the version you're using ?

I tried it outside with google map during 2-3 min then google maps gave me and error saying something like "no satellites were found.. try outside .. check you gps configs .... blah blah"

My phone is not activated yet. I want to bargain a good deal with Telus first. Do you think that's the root cause ?

yes, im pretty sure it needs data connection.

you do need to have a data connection. Not sure if yhe no data cab file works on the Pro2. On another note, has anyone using google maps gotten more than 5sats

I initially had issues getting GPS to lock on the TP2. Even standing in a field on a clear day I waited for 5 minutes and still didn't get any sats!

Anyone having issue with GPS should try running the GPS Registry Settings cab from the diamond forum: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=36639

Since installing that I am locking on 5-9 sats in google maps within seconds.

O'Neil Mitchell: most sats i've seen in google maps is 11 so far.

I've installed it on my TP2.. Can't wait to test that out. Unfortunately, we don't have Wi-Fi at work so I'll have to wait 'till I get home to verify if it's working.

Wow - installed the TELUS cab and Google Maps found 7-9 satellites almost instantly. Before, it couldn't find any!

I didn't even have to do anything beyond installing the CAB file - what additional benefit does the other stuff provide?

Actually I tried going through the instructions for the gpsOne settings, but the QPST program did not recognize the phone.

I'm honestly not sure what benefits the gpsOne settings give you, perhaps someone else more experienced can explain it. I guess it's not necessary on the Touch Pro 2, as it seems to work without it.

Save yourself the time I spent with it, and just install the cab and call it a day!

Did you also perform the PQST gpsOne changes in that post or just install the cab? I tried to follow the gpsOne instructions, but found out the link to QPST was to an older revision (v2.7 Build 301) that does not work with the TP2. I installed build 323 and that was able to identify the phone. I could read the values from the phone, but got an error writing the updated values back....NV_READONLY_S....

I re-ran QPST and re-read the values and they were written / saved though.

Curious if anyone knows if the gpsOne changes are really required???

I keep getting the "Seeking GPS Satellites (0)" message....even though GPS must be locking okay because it shows me where I am :mrgreen:

As far as I can tell google maps is able to use cell tower triangulation on the touch pro. If you are seeing a large blue circle around your location it's a good indicator that GPS is not being used.

Coming from the Diamond I was surprised to see the triangulation working on this phone. It's not as accurate as gps though.

I didn't install anything and had no problems getting the GPS working in google maps.

While inside it was using the Data connection (I think) and the actual location that it found wasn't that close (like 2 - 3 blocks away). I went outside and after 2-3 minutes google maps picked up 4 - 5 sattelites and pin pointed my location.

I get the same amount of stats as you. Thats not enough, we should be getting atlease 8-10

Good news everyone! My gps is now working. My phone is still not activated and I've installed IGo 8.3 it recognized my gps. Now Google Maps is working !

restart the phone and try google maps first now. see if that works and if it dont then you have to run IGo 8.3 first always to get gps to work

I'm glad to report I'm getting more favourable results in Google Maps since I made my earlier noted changes. I'm now getting 9 active satellites and my location is within 10m. When I tried this before from the same location, my house, I was within 2900m...3 damn kilometres!

So you were finally able to edit the QPST Settings. If so con you post the the updated version. I'm getting GPS locks, however its taking 3-5min, plus I'm only getting 4-7Sats

My first post did say that although I got an error during writing the gpsOne values back to the phone in QPST, when I re-read them back they had changed. Therefore despite the error I posted, the update seemed to take.

There seems to be a new post on the main TP2 Forum "How To: Configure GPS" by tobeychris which is essentually a copy of his original HTC Diamond thread about the same issue. I've just replied to that to say that the link to QPST in that thread is to an older version (2.7 build 301) that does not seem to recognize the TP2, or at least not mine! I posted a link to a newer version I uploaded here.

I found out that the gps must be configure this way in apps to make it work :

Port : com4
Baud rate : 38400

At least, it worked for me...
