So, Sprint Rep Says TP2 is NOT a Smartphone!
OK, so I got a used EVO the other day and decided to activate it via the sprint website - knowing that it probably wouldn't work..which it didn't. I'm on the Family talk 700 with the unlimited data pack addon.
I called sprint and asked why not and was told that I couldn't do it with my current plan and had to upgrade to a plan that was designed for a smartphone. I told her that I have a Touchpro 2 and it is a smartphone so I should be able to. Se responded with "Sir, the Touchpro 2 is not a smartphone". Of course, I told her that it most certainly was and that it was listed on their website as well as HTC's anf hundreds of others as such but she told me that "The Android phones were considered smartphones." So, of course I asked then if I got a WM7 phone, could I continue on my same plan and she responded with "No, they are smartphones too." So, now I'm confused (joking) only androids are smartphones... no wait, WM7 is too, but wait, WM6.5 makes it a smartphone only on certain phones... Anyway, I tried to plead my case unsuccessfully and knew that she was more than likely going from a script, so I'll just call back later and try my luck with retentions and gripe a whole bunch. Just had to rant a bit... David |
Re: So, Sprint Rep Says TP2 is NOT a Smartphone!
should have ask her what 'dumb' phone she is using....hahaha.
Have run into this with Verizon and AT&T as well. Was looking at WP7 choices and both were telling me that Windows mobile was not on smartphones.......(mine being a TP2 with WM6.5.3). So I played it up and asked what was a smartphone? and the answer..... you guessed it, Android..... So the Verizon instore rep was confused when I showed him my TP2 running Android. He still wouldn't say that the TP2 was/is a smartphone. Just thought it was funny...... |

Re: So, Sprint Rep Says TP2 is NOT a Smartphone!
I can't stand the ineptitude of these reps. not just from this but from my data issues as well, one rep told me that there were no issues with the tower that serves my zip code AT ALL. well there had to have been some explanation as to why my 3G speeds were at dialup and EDGE levels between the hours of 12pm and 1am in my zip code. it certainly wasn't my phone. I also hate when they say they'll call back and never do so, so I actually do NOT KNOW the progress of the repairs of my tower in this area but I know that they are still shit at times but less often than before. how long does it take to fix a tower and how hard can it be to notify customers of these issues? only just recently they put "we are improving your network experience" in a newsletter but that was after I blasted them on a local radio station.

The posterior prodding farce that is the Everything Plan is what is at play here. They know quite well that any Sprint phone will work with any plan but put up these artificial plan barriers.
They get away with it because they know that most will just hrrummp and pay, 'cause where else are they going? The alternatives stink anyway price-wise. Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk |
Re: So, Sprint Rep Says TP2 is NOT a Smartphone!
Of course it is a smart phone. They are using "that is not a smart phone" as a ploy to force you to change your data plan to something more $$$$$$$$$$$$.

I get disgusted every time I go into a Sprint store because while I'm in there I hear all kinds of misinformation from the employees. Usually someone is looking for a new smartphone and the workers tell customers that if they want a great phone for texting the only choice is an Android device because "it's where it's at." They don't even bother to mention a WP7 device like the Arrive. :angry7: |

I will say I went in on release day to get mine (didn't even want to look at, test, or touch one). The person that helped me had nothing but good things to say about it and really knew about the product except for having no SDCard. Maybe he was just trying to protect me from messing w/my phone? I do agree w/you Doc. Listening to the conversations w/other customers less informed made me cringe at times. |
Re: So, Sprint Rep Says TP2 is NOT a Smartphone!
I ran into something similar. I have a "Free & Clear Family Plan" on Sprint with free unlimited data. We share it on 3 lines. Two are TP2, one is an old clam-shell phone. The user of the clam-shell finally wants to upgrade. We're past the contract, so I asked about renewing and getting new phones. Here's what they said:

We have the exact same plans, phones, free data, etc.. I was told no last week, that I could no longer activate a TP2 without an upgrade. However, if you've been around long enough to have free & clear, just talk to retentions, you'll get it. Here is a thread I did on all this a while back you may find helpfull Sprint TP2, 3G new fees, forced new plans, no grandfather, no upgrade path it's kind of a mess due to all the changes I had to make to the original post, because of the new Sprint policies, but the entire thread has lots of info as well. Above, you said you "bought one on ebay", guessing you haven't received in mail yet, please let us know how it goes with activation. :>} |

As for the TP2...yikes! I just spent over $100 on one, so I'll be pretty mad if I can't activate it. Out of curiosity, did you actually buy one and use the website to activate it, or did you just call and ask? Some of the posts I've seen say that the website will still let you activate it with no trouble. Fingers crossed! |
Re: So, Sprint Rep Says TP2 is NOT a Smartphone!
For sure try the web 1st!!
I wasn't trying to activate one on the phone, was just having a VERY long discussion re. the upgrade path (or lack there of) of a tp2... |
Re: So, Sprint Rep Says TP2 is NOT a Smartphone!
I had this argument with sprint customer service, and retention so many times its ridiculous. TP2 is a smartphone just because its support F&F,Sero. Still a great smartphone.

Re: So, Sprint Rep Says TP2 is NOT a Smartphone!
I actually would have to partially agree with the rep, WM6.5 is sorta garbage now in the grand scheme of things.
A beta, in the works version of Android that runs on an SD card is still better than a stock official stable (though dead) version of WM6.5 |
Re: So, Sprint Rep Says TP2 is NOT a Smartphone!
Poor rep doesnt have much knowledge whenit comes to phones even though she deals with them every day she has to follow a script while she has a iphone in her pocket

You should've asked how much your deductible is. "Well if this isn't a smartphone why is my deductible 100 instead of 50?"

Still use my TP2 which is still in new like condition with wimospeed overclocked (748) and very happy with my TP2. Still love it baby!!!!!!

If you wanna blast back a couple years "technically" the tp2 is a PocketPC, not a smartphone. So in a dumb way the rep was right.. a Smartphone was any wm phone that didn't have a touch screen...

Re: So, Sprint Rep Says TP2 is NOT a Smartphone!
so does this mean we can activate a touch pro 2 WITHOUT paying the extra $10 for smart phone data?
my brother (dumb phone) wants to get a TP2 like my sister and I have but we are afraid they will charge him the $10 extra for "smart phone" data (Sero plan) thoughts? |

Re: So, Sprint Rep Says TP2 is NOT a Smartphone!
I had a similar situation.
WAAAAY back when the palm pre was introcuded, I wanted to get it, and I had a lg rumor at the time, the sprint rep said Id have to upgrade my plan if I wanted to get it. So I didnt. But then I got the touch pro 2 from a friend and they changed it out just fine. No changes to the plan at all. So I was thinking about getting an evo shift and the rep I was talking to said that Id have to upgrade. I told her how I had boughten the tp2 and brought it in and wasnt asked to upgrade and didnt have any changes to my sprint account. She didnt go on the android rant though, she simply said, "The touch pro 2 and a few select other phones from its time dont concume the same amount of data, so thats why we can let them slide. Now if you were to get a newer generation phone like the evo's, many android style phones, or even the newer windows phone they are releaceing, they have much higher data consumption rate and would require a new plan to be able to give thoes type of phones the prouper...'allowance' of internet and other information to let them run at their best." I guess she knew what she was talking about.. but I had also needed the screen fixed on my phone and she said that even if I didnt have insurance, their repair center on the other side of town might be able to fix it still if I paid for it. so she gave me the number and when I called and told them the situation the guy only said "ok, to get the record straight, if you do not have an instore insurance plan, or anytype of warentee for you phone... we, WILL NOT, touch your phone, period." Then he pretty much waited for me to hang up |
Re: So, Sprint Rep Says TP2 is NOT a Smartphone!
LOL, I gotta laugh! I've spent several hours on the phone (landline) with sprint support and my local ISP becuase I could not get text or data on my TP2. Several resets of the phone, airvana, network and nothing. But, everything worked outside of my house.
The funny thing is that while on the phone with SEVERAL sprint techs, they repeatedly referred to my TP2 as a "smartphone". I laughed and told them what the CSR I spoke with said and the tech laughed saying "of course the TP2 is a smartphone". @ aedon, I'd love to see what the average data consumption is for an android phone. I end up using a couple gigs on my WM phone per month and thats not really heavy use for me. @ everyone else, Thanks for the responses. IMO, Sprint is not gonna budge on it so I'm stuck with my TP2 as long as I can milk it along and not break it. The EVO I got is really nice and works great as a mini wifi tablet. I can run the apps I need for school... I just look like a dork with two phones... :-o David |
Re: So, Sprint Rep Says TP2 is NOT a Smartphone!
Folks. lets be real. a heavy tp2 users WILL use just as much data on a TP2 (if not MORE) than on an android handset.
the excuse that they use more data is nothing but CYA. ie they need a legitimate sounding excuse to REFUSE to let you use the newer phone as one more way to try and force you to upgrade your plan. nothing more. |

Almost everything I use on android constantly uses data. especially pandora, wich I use almost nonstop. But ya, I def concider the tp2 a smartphone, I dont care what anyone ses. And yes, people could use just as much if not more data compared to an android device depending on their use of it. Like ive said, I use pandora all day on windows mobile and on the android port. And I tether my phones internet almost every day cause the internet on my phone is faster then my schools net. Or at least it used to be, now my phones being retaurded |
Re: So, Sprint Rep Says TP2 is NOT a Smartphone!
So does this mean that I would qualify for the $100 trade-in soon to be launched at Big Red? Verizon to offer a $100 trade-in for basic phone customers to get a smartphone - Phone Arena
