Adding the front camera to Sprint TP2

So, I am getting ready to buy the front camera from a euro TP2 and attempt to install it on my Sprint TP2, I know i need the face plate with the camera hole and obviously the camera itself. But I was wondering if anyone has a picture of the board where the camera plugs into. I have searched as many tear down docs and I can find but no photo of that board from the proper angle.

Any input on this?

Wow, you are definitely ambitious. I would love to see you get this working, then you can tell the rest of us how to do it.

Does it need special drivers/software/custom built rom?

I am assuming I will need to get drivers from a euro rom... I was hoping that someone knew a little more about it that me...

I believe you are going where few, if any, have ventured before!

Re: Adding the front camera to Sprint TP2

believe the boards are different between the GSM and CDMA versions.....front camera socket on front of board where CDMA only has single back side connection for the camera.

Still, would love to see someone give it a try....maybe bridge the ribbon cable from the back to the front and see if you can get it to power both cameras at the same time?

This guy says it will fit perfectly, but without a firmware hack you'll never get to enable it.

no kidding, if someone can confirm i would definitely follow suit...

or if someone wanted to pitch in a donate for funding for me to do it personally... oh come on, i had to do it... after all its how I did mods on my Sony CLIE UX-50... rest its ass kicking soul (it can still kick most smart phones ass's today)... If someone could put Android on the UX-50 id go back to a shitty flip-phone any day...

Re: Adding the front camera to Sprint TP2

Not sure if this is still being worked on but, after you get the hardware installed to enable this you will need...

1. Boot up commands to start the camera (This is the hardest part, the this is hacking the bios of the phone, the FM radio is in this part and hackers for a long time have been trying to enable this with out NO LUCK).
2. Software drivers
3. Software to use (Skype, etc)

Getting the hardware to fit, I would say is the EASY part, the hardest part is getting the phone to enable the camera and that I would say is almost impossable.

I hope you get it working but, unless your a HIGH level HTC Programmer or OEM, I don't forsee you getting this working. If you are a High level HTC programmer, could you enable the FM radio for the Sprint and Verizon phones ?

highlandsun 05-31-2011 06:19 PM

Last I knew, the CDMA phones have no FM tuner, it was removed to make room for the CDMA stuff. But that's 2nd hand info, mebbe it's still there...

Re: Adding the front camera to Sprint TP2

You should do a little more research... I read a thread a while back where the OP had transferred the entire screen half of an ATT Tilt to a Sprint TP2. He ran into some issues but I can't remember what the final outcome was.
I know he said the two halves were compatible... I'm not sure what he had to do to get the front facing camera working (as far as software is concerned).
Good luck either way.
I'll post up the thread if I can find it.

I hope it helps... Oh... And YEAH... No FM tunner. Not going to happen.

I wonder how XDAndroid works with this front facing camera?

I'm deaf and uses xdandroid on my AT&T Tilt2 all the time.if android can work with the front facing camera, then I would be tempted to follow in your footstep so I can use the various android video calling softwares out there for the deaf :-)

highlandsun 06-01-2011 05:15 AM

Quite sure XDAndroid doesn't support it yet. Since only RHOD100s had it, and rhod100 is already the most poorly supported ... probably wouldn't come for a long time.

While that's true, android have much more capability to use cameras like this compared to windows mobile beside the obvious potential missing drivers. I just think that maybe it's something that the OP could at least test and see if he can get beyond the black screen preview of the front facing camera.

Re: Adding the front camera to Sprint TP2

Is it a techie challenge thing to keep tweaking an older phone to do what new phones do? Or lack of fundage? I just don't get it I guess...
I guess I'm curious as to why this is necessary including the part where people want to put Android on a phone not designed to run Android.

I wanted certain things from my phone... My TP2 wasn't giving me those things... So... I just bought a new phone that did.

I see it like putting off road tires and a four wheel drive conversion on a toyota camery when there are perfectly good trucks that can do it better and without as much effort.

But I get it if you guys are just doing it for fun and to see how far you can push the envelope. Like making a monster garage type of car.

Just curious that's all.

android on the tp2 is good, but its awesome on the hd2. makes that thing run like it should.

Re: Adding the front camera to Sprint TP2

Yeah... But if you are on Sprint and you want a front facing camera and Android... Why not just get an EVO or an Epic?

See what I don't get?

highlandsun 06-01-2011 06:36 PM

I'm on T-Mobile, otherwise the Epic would have been on my list. And switching to Sprint wouldn't work for me because I want GSM since I travel frequently to Europe. If Samsung had released their Galaxy S Pro for GSM I would never have gotten involved with the TP2.

Re: Adding the front camera to Sprint TP2

getting back on topic, I would live to see a front camera on a TP2.

I love my TP2 and until VZW releases a WP7 that is 4" + screen, front camera and physical keyboard, I am staying with TP2 on NRGz custom rom.

Does all that I need it to do for now. Front camera would allow me to use Skype from my phone vs. having to dig out the laptop to do this.......

Low Tech Front Camera but Which Software?

Here is a low tech idea using 2 mirrors but the question is how to use it with Skype on my WM as Skype for Windows Mobile 3.0 does not offer video option on my Tilt 2 (ATT's TP2):

http://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j0...W-0101090-.jpg
iSeeU $7 shipped on Fleabay. It can probably be modded for the centered camera of the TP2. I tried it with a 2 mirrors make-up thing to make self-portraits but how to get Skype with video on Windows Mobile? Links or tweaks details would be helpful.

http://www.channelmax.net/users/cetd...30010120-3.jpg

Edit: Some make-up double mirrors have one of them magnifying which does not work good. I bought 2 Chinese ones @ $1 each & swapped the magnifying with the regular one of the other.

gullzway 06-02-2011 01:41 AM

Probably a lost cause, just buy an Epic!

Cool idea with the two mirrors... had not seen that done before!

Re: Adding the front camera to Sprint TP2

just buying an epic or an evo is the ultimate last resort...after everything else is tried, and probably still not....for a cheap geek on a $30 sero plan.

Re: Adding the front camera to Sprint TP2

But by the time you buy the other phone and swap the camera section and buy the two mirrors and spend countless hours geeking and drinking Mountain Dew trying to get shit to work... You might as well have bought a less than pristine EVO on the interwebs... Just sayin.

Agreed, why spend all that money getting a TP2 front camera to work, when you can just spend $20 more a month for SERO Premium and get the Unlimited Data and GPS you already had!

Wirelessly posted (htc Pocket PC: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 8.12; MSIEMobile6.0) Sprint T7380)

The problem is not a hardware issue. Just like the fm radio deal on the cdma tp2 you could put the hardware in the device but someone would have to hack the spl in order to activate the hardware on boot and then someone may also have to write a software driver or port/hack the gsm driver. Anyone wanna go through all that? lol ;)

Ummm... it would be totally cool if someone had the ability and the knowledge to do so!! Good thoughts though, horndoctor!

hey guys, ppcg just came out with a news story where you can have a FFC though your sdcard. maybe look into that?

Not FFC (front facing camera), NFC from SDCard (Near Field Communications; i.e. QuickPass, pass phone near terminal at store for payment).

Re: Adding the front camera to Sprint TP2

IIRC, the FM Tuner IS in the CDMA phones, but the HSPL or whatever has 0 trace of its init... (as per the last INFORMED post int he "official" thread for it -and nue's input)

also, heres why not just get an evo or epic... $10 a month more.. that simple.. I have to use an Airave and WiFi as it is for Voice/Data at home/work/school, screw off if im going to give you $10 more a month for something I already cant use...

I tried to place the HD2 camera in the Touch Pro2 and it fits. The only problem is enabling the camera to work in the TP2.

forget the homo comment im about to make, but, i felt a tingle when i read your name "JAmerican", even had a small trip down memory lane with my UX50, which would have been such a disappointment if not your work on the little bugger...

anyway, back to the topic, JAmerican: proving people wrong by going as far as possible since the beginning of time (aka camera fits fine, but needs HSPL/Radio/Whatever fix to activate and utilize it)

BRB, thanks hunting your posts

Kane, how's it going man. This is the same JAmerican from 1src lol. The UX was definitely before its time. I was quite disappointed that I couldn't make it last the whole day still. My battery mod eventually stopped working lol. I really like the Touch Pro 2 with its tilt-able screen. Unfortunately, the processor is weak and the camera is just okay.

If someone with some programming experience or with a HD2 could provide the exact driver to the camera, maybe I could get it to work by swapping the driver. The TP2 camera driver is called CIF.dll. If I could get the HD2's camera DLL, I could swap them out.

JAmerican, I got an HD2, but im running NANDroid on it :P its WM6.5 or Android, iOS is bleh, and WP7 is BLEEEEEHHHH...

Ill ask in the HD2 WM thread tho, but why the HD2 driver? they are totally different phones? what makes the HD2's driver the desired one? thought the GSM TP2 that already has the front facing camera would be the one you would want... color me confused!

I placed the HD2 camera in the Touch Pro2. The only way to get the camera to work (in my limited understanding) is the HD2 camera driver, since the camera is from the HD2. I doubt this is the only thing needed to get this to work but it is worth a try. When I disabled the Touch Pro2's camera driver while the Touch Pro2 camera was in the device, I got the same error message as the HD2 camera.

Understood?
