Personal Communications Devices | Our Devices - XV6875

Dated 11/30/2010.

Re: Verizon TP2 MR3 upgrade is available

why the HELL has the VZW TP2 had like 3 ROM upgrades meanwhile the sprint version has only had 1? VZW isnt even selling the damn thing anymore.

Re: Verizon TP2 MR3 upgrade is available

yea guess so, we as sprint users need a 21916 build that doesnt suffer the SOD and RAM issues like the 21889 build does, theres some custom roms that are this build but something i use is always ending up borked whether it be MMS(yes i provision correctly), OzIM or the myphone speeds.

Re: Verizon TP2 MR3 upgrade is available

The documentation says:

The upgrade performs the following improvements:
1) Qualcomm security update

If that's all it is, is it really worth going through the hassle of upgrading?

I tried using this ROM over my MightyRom and it just hung there at the HTC (white background) boot screen. Never went further. Flashing back to Stock what I call MR0, haha

I guess it might help to add, for those who don't know, that you will have to re-lock your phone before flashing the MR2 or MR3, then unlock the phone again to flash back to desired rom.

Re: Verizon TP2 MR3 upgrade is available

The update has a newer radio as well. It was 2.35 in MR2, 2.37 in MR3. It looks like the WM base system hasn't been updated though.

so only a radio update?

Anyone rip the radio out yet so we can flash ONLY the radio?

Thanks.

1 Attachment(s)
I have extracted the new Verizon rom.

As said before, it includes a new radio: 2.37!!

The packages are quite old...see screenshot.

I have to examinate the most interesting part...drivers :)
Let's hope for something new.

I ripped the radio NB out... now to compile the NBH. Any tool other than YANG that is recommended for our devices before I start?

Haha, well, I grew a pair and tested it on my own phone. Works just fine, but it did stall on 97% for a while trying to give me a heart attack.

Anyway, here is the link and I take no responsibility if it causes issues on your phone. I have a VZW RHOD500, and I wouldn't recommend flashing this on any other devices.

Re: Verizon TP2 MR3 upgrade is available

Has anybody else tried this yet? Not sure if it is the radio or the PRL update I just did, but 3G is a little bit faster than 2.35 was for me. Pulling around 600 Kbps from inside my building when I used to get around 400 Kbps. On Opera Mini, it pulls quite a bit faster. Used to get like 2100 Kbps, but it's jumped to 2400 Kpbs :)

Re: Verizon TP2 MR3 upgrade is available

Just did the update (Verizon stock MR2 to MR3). ROM Utility reported the same ROM version as MR2. The upgrade took a little less than 5 minutes from the time I saw the multi-colored boot screen. When phone came back up, the ROM information is identical to MR2, except for the Radio (as previously mentioned). This ROM has the same date and versions. I don't see the point of this update at all, but I don't think it actually flashes the whole phone, as the upgrade was much quicker than MR2. Hope this helps others!

You are correct. They only updated the radio and SPL.

I think I know the answer, but here goes anyway: Is there any way to flash the new radio only without losing all my data and settings like I do in a ROM-flash or MR upgrade?

Yes, the radio update in the zip does not touch the OS portions ;)

Just unzip and run CustomRUU.exe. You do have to be CID unlocked though.

download nate's zip and flash the radio because that is all there is to flash,no data loss or any other changes, after the flash and the soft reset everything will be the same, the only change being made is the radio version

Thanks, Nate. How do I check for CID unlock? And do I need to remove my SD card?

Have you ever unlocked your phone so you can flash a custom ROM? If not, you would have to either HardSPL your phone or use the original MR3 update from Verizon to get the radio update (which may or may not wipe your OS).

Anyone know if you can update to this from MR1? would it just update the radio as well? BTW not unlocked, and dont neccessarly want to run mr2, i dont think. I've had no problems with MR1 and it runs without EVER getting SOD.

Unfortunately, you cannot flash this unless you are unlocked. When Verizon releases the updates, they are digitally signed and the phone sees that signature and allows the update. Once you disassemble the ROM, the signature is lost. At that point, you can't recompile and sign it again without having their code signing certificate.

I flashed the radio last night, and I just noticed that my carrier is listed as Sprint now when I tap the bar to look at notifications. Should I be worried?

Edit: Just re-programmed my phone by dialing *228 and pressing 1. Problem solved!

For anyone who ran the full VzW update from MR2 to MR3: did MR3 erase your data like the other VzW MR's did? Some have said that since the OS is not really being updated (only the Radio), that the data stays intact. True?

I'm trying to decide whether to update. An improved Radio would be nice, but I am not sure I want to re-customize my TP2. Thanks.

They can flash the full update without being unlocked. If people are only looking for a radio upgrade though, then they're screwed.

Yes, this will be like flashing any other ROM and wipe everything. The only way it won't wipe the phone is if you flash just the radio. Even though there are little to no changes in the base system, it's still a full ROM update.

Re: Verizon TP2 MR3 upgrade is available

It would be really interesting to know if this rom update fixed any other issues. With the MR3 download being 173mb, it's not just a radio. Even if they changed a few files, it could have a major impact on the system perfomance, SOD, TF3D or other known issues with this phone.

Just by what is posted, I just flashed the radio but, was thinking about the whole thing but, didn't want to have to re-lock my phone again.

Does any one really know (not just a guess by the WM version) ?

I guess if Mr. X makes a unlocked version of MR3, then I would install it.

Re: Verizon TP2 MR3 upgrade is available

Hi BullyDawg,

I can confirm what imnuts said. Running the downlaoded MR3, seems to do a hard reset after flasing the radio. I had to completely re-setup my phone. Which was ok, as I had intended on hard resetting soon anyway (to clean up from Cookie's Home Tab 2). I am rather annoyed that it reset everything only to update the radio (only two builds newer to boot). They should have released it as a radio update only, and not as MR3. Good luck!

Rich S.

I will break apart both releases tomorrow and do a hash comparison. From what I saw, the OS payloads were the same size in both, and the versions said they were the same build. If Verizon had updated anything, I would expect them to change the build numbers, but you never know.

Also, I don't know if Mr. X will be messing around with the TP2 stuff anymore. I know he posted what he did, so maybe I'll look that up while I'm at it :)

I'm more interested in how the radio performs. I live in a very diverse cell signal area and so if there is any improvement I'll let you know.

So far with it (as you might of saw, I just installed the radio), It's questionable so far.

I live in a problem area myself, use a network extender (that will grab a low powered tower when I walk over to the other side of my house, then will not re-connect to the extender resulting in dropped calls)

For the first testings, it seemed to work better but, over all if anything 1-2% better, I still result in dropped calls a lot.

Thanks, I'm wondering (and I am sure a lot of others are), even with Mr. X's fixed MR2 build, I still have SOD problems a lot and other lockups (hard reset a few times now), so it makes me wonder if anything is really fixed.

As I said above, the radio is maybe a hair bit better but, not that much better in my tests.

If it was a unlocked version (really don't want to have to possably pay to unlock my phone again), I would nuke and try it today.....

Thanks again !

yup...I get the same result. Still drops in all the normal places.

If anybody knows why I always drop a call at mile marker 126, and just north of the bridge in King, NC that would be awesome.

Re: Verizon TP2 MR3 upgrade is available

OK, so I disassembled both MR2 and MR3 for comparison. There does not appear to be a single difference in the OS payloads. All of the EXT packages are identical, all of the OEM jazz is the same, and all of the file sizes match. I'm not going to bother with hash comparisons on all of the files, but I can pretty much confirm there were no changes.

As for cleaning up the ROM like Mr. X did, I will take a look at it, but I could only dream of being as talented as some of our chefs. I haven't compiled a ROM since the Wizard days :P

Interesting, Why would they release a whole update when they could just release a radio (1/100th of the size)? Why they do things like that I have no idea. That's Verizon for you...morons

I thought I was pretty good with the XV6800, I knew my way around PPCkitchen like the back of my hand and make many custom roms for my own use. I guess the real reason was to get 6.5 on a 6.1 phone, the TP2 has 6.5 so I have not seen the need to try it. (I am unlocked tho, because I have tried radios, etc) If there is a way found to put WP7 on a TP2, trust me in about 3 days I would be the master at it again :)

Thanks for looking !
