Sprint Users: call to report if My Location weather is not updating

EDIT: So, the concensus is that this is a problem with the My Location service as implemented by HTC _or_ a cell-tower configuration in your local which affects the ability of the phone to update "My Location" over the air.

So, call Sprint to report the issue.

Code:

http://www.sprint.com/contactus/

Call *2 or
888-211-4727

Interesting ... I did a couple of searches and I was not able to locate anything relevant that was posted / updated in the past 30 days.

I have tried Mr. X, MightyROM and my own cooked ROM with OsBuilder kitchen. None of these ROMs work for me to update the manila weather tab Over The Air. If I connect via WiFi, weather updates just fine.

Using an Over The Air connection I can do anything else with the phone, with the exception of getting the manila weather tab to update. I have other weather programs that update over the air and WiFi. Manila weather tab will only update via WiFi.

<edit> up until Friday, July 2nd this has worked flawlessly for me, so it would seem something has changed, but it is odd that it would work via WiFi and not over the air

Thoughts?

Best regards,
-boggsie

One odd thing, for the first time the weather update didn't list my town's name, but the name of a town about 10 miles east of me.:dontknow:

Might be an Ohio thing.. My weather wont update either but my sencondary location updates every time!

Re: manila 2.5 weather not working over the air

Even more interesting ... any location that I add via the add location city database works fine; Ohio or not. However, my locale (via my location) will only update via WiFi connection.

have had the same issue, since the 2nd also, i am in cleveland, oh. crazy. lemme turn on the wifi and see if the "my location" works. the last update i got was when i drove out to elyria.

i wonder if sprint blocked the update site because of the number of requests in this area. because it worked over wifi

I'm not sure how to describe this, but here goes:

In the Sense 2.5 weather panel, there is an option to use or enable a "My Location" or "Location Update" feature. If you respond "Yes" then you no longer see this menu option. i.e. You cannot go back into the menu option to turn the feature off. I mention this, because if you don't see the menu option, this is probably why: You have already enabled the feature.

This "location" feature (presumably) turns on some type of GPS or cell-tower driven ability to "automagically" identify the location of the phone. Having identified the location, the phone then retrieves the weather forecast for that particular location.

What some (including myself) have identified, is a type of "work-around" where you can retrieve weather data for the location-based site via WiFi as opposed to over the air.

In addition to the "location based" weather information, you can also add some number of cities via the "Add Location" feature.

So here is a really, really interesting thing. In my case, any site that I add using the "Add Location" option, is able to update weather information over the air.

So, I speculate ... it seems that the carrier, in my case, Sprint, is allowing weather information to update over the air. So if this is the case, I wonder what is unique about the static choices available via Add Location, versus the dynamic location option and how is that difference impacting the ability to update weather?

With your Airave off, do you connect via 3G or does your signal drop to 1x?

Does turning off your Airave force you into roaming?

the difference is one is based on your location - which is based on your location...the other is a static city name from a database. Difference is - figuring out where you are versus just looking up weather in a database.
sounds to me like your phone is having trouble figuring out where you are...

i am in wisconsin and my weather updates fine. did you guys check if your "HTC location service" box is checked ??? (Settings tab > Location )

i know that if i uncheck that box i get similar results to what you are mentioning...

I can't remember how to get to that setting pre-wm6.5 sense 2.5
Someone else will have to mention how to get to it in older versions.

Thanks for engaging in the discussion and for challenging with some additional questions.

On first read, I would tend to agree. Those of us affected apparently have phones with apparently are having difficulties identifying the current location.

However, my phone does not (universally) have a problem identifying the current location. As stated above, if I am on WiFi, the phone is apparently able to identify location well enough (again, via WiFi) to be able to identify a location and update the weather. So the difference seems to be tied to WiFi vs. Cell Tower.

Apart from knowing that Google Maps and Bing are able to identify and target location via Cell Tower triangulation and GPS, I'm not exactly sure how else I would know that the hardware is or is not working properly. Just to reiterate, this occurs consistently with three ROMs, but I have yet to check the stock 6.5 Sprint ROM. Maybe that is a reasonable justification for a flash back to stock.

I really think it has to do with the HTC location service.
Maybe it is coded or setup so that the location service can run if a wi-fi connection is present. Dont know.

There is a toggle to enable/disable HTC location service - I presume for people that do not have unlimited data and/or for people that want to conserve battery use.
I could be wrong but about the only thing I have noticed the HTC location service does - is figure out where you are for the weather info / location temp information.

If you can find this setting in the rom you are running you can test it easily (just enable it and then go to the weather tab and hit update and see what happens).

I know when I had it disabled my phone did some weird stuff (like it sort of knew what city to display i was in but the weather wouldnt update). As soon as I checked HTC location service it updated.

Adding "My Location" to the google search mix really adds a bunch of pages to the list of results.

So this appears to be across different phones and carriers, too.

Looks like it is an HTC location service issue - but not quite what I was expecting =)

Do you have one of these Airaves ???

Another Sprint Ohio user with the same problem. I have been on opposite sides of the Columbus area today with no change.

I was a loyal Mightyrom user, but tried another a few days ago and since have not been able to get My Location working. I even went back to the latest Mightyrom last night without luck. I ran Task29 before my last flash to make sure it wasn't something left behind from the older flashes. Good to hear that it isn't just me.

Interesting thought; wouldn't that be limited to affecting users who are having the issue while roaming to other providers (non-Sprint) towers?

To be honest I have no idea. It just seems strange that everyone is in Ohio and started having issues at the same time (or there is a really big coincidence). It is almost like a new tower went up or a tower went down or ???

Maybe PRL isnt it - is there something else that would affect where your signal is coming from ???

Re: manila 2.5 weather not working over the air

Okay... Here goes

Its not your ROM that your flashing, its something with Sprint and there system. Saying this because I called HTC and sprint with NO LUCK. So I went to the repair store and they ordered me a new phone ( that I picked up today ) Still no luck, So with-out leaving the store I told the Tech, that I was still having the same problem. 2 hrs later he came back with NO LUCK ( with 3 other TP2's, same problem) So..... Long story short, for a temp fix. Turn on your WIFI ON and it'll give you your exact location ( ONLY WORKS WITH WIFI ON) And I'm doing more searching to find I fix ( not really having to much luck ) but will post if I do. Oh... I'm looking for a way to change my radio (phone) to a stronger channel.

One more thing, just a thought.... Wonder if it has anything to do with the new 4G coming to Ohio? Just a thought.

Re: manila 2.5 weather not working over the air

In Sunrise, FL (20 miles west of Ft. Lauderdale) here and was having the same issue, but have it working again after letting it run until the battery ran out of power then plugging it in and recharging to full before turning it back on (about 4 hours). I suspect that there's old data that's not getting flushed as the cause. It's either that or the fact that the GPS sats are being taxed pretty heavily due to the oil spill activity in the Gulf.

I spent a LOT of time messing around with this after the issue started occurring almost immediately following updating to Verizon MR2. Took a short trip south of Miami to Homestead right after I had flashed and setup all my apps, including Bing which I was testing out the GPS on and seemed to be working just fine. I remember hitting Update while there to see the Location change, and it updated while there but after I got back and tried again, it was still stuck down there. Tried to fix by unlocking and installing the Mr. X MR2 update (which is working great and I definitely recommend over Verizon's); unfortunately, it did not correct the Weather "bug" as it continued to occur.

Found many posts about the issue and tried most of the suggested workarounds (turning Location off/on, etc). Was resigned to just waiting it out as some folks have reported it automatically start working normally again after a few weeks. The workaround I was using was to turn on HTC WiFi Router then do the Weather update. It would also update if connected to WLAN or through ActiveSync to my home network - WLAN just had to be on, it didn't actually have to be connected (as demonstrated by the WiFi Router workaround).

Anyway, hope this helps someone else as frustrated as I was. Again, it's been working flawlessly OTA since running it all the way out of battery power and charging it back up before turning it back on.

Re: manila 2.5 weather not working over the air

I am running NRG CHT v1.8.5 and I also can not get Weather updates (It just says Data Not Available).

I had to manually set the location (closest location not even being that close to me). So I just ended up installing Weather4me and setting it as my default weather application.

So atleast when I click on my Weather tab I can get accurate information (However it still shows the "closest" location on the Clock, which happens to not be even close at all).

It only started doing this after I flashed my first rom, and I have no clue how to get it back to working like it use to (minus maybe going back to the Stock Sprint Rom, which I will NOT do).
