WM 6.5 does have a Task Manager, but I have to keep going into Start to get it going. I just want it back on top with the X to close the prog the way it was W/o having to install another prog. Any chance? The WModem cab in this thread: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...ghlight=wmodem Worked real.good on my Titan and TP but it won't install on new TP2. Anyone knows why or have another WModem cab which works on TP2? |
Re: Can't install WModem on my new TP2 also no Task Manager
search for arkswitch task manager, probably the best for 6.5 out there. makes touching the left 1/3rd of your taskbar bring up the task manager.
I'm using MMTaskManager. it has worked well for me. have you tried the ICS program that comes on the sprint phone? run ICS, wait for it to say usb cable disconnected, then connect it to your computer. works for me everytime, but some have trouble getting it to work on the new sprint 6.5 |

Re: Can't install WModem on my new TP2 also no Task Manager
I got ICS to run after those fixes everyone talks about but I couldn't connect thr my Wrkplace VPN using ICS as I suspected.
The ICS doesn't provide yr computer w/ a public ip that my VPN prog would need to see. When I ipconfig, my connection w/ ICS gives a l92.l68.*.* ip. The ICS connection is NAT'ed just like that thread regarding WModem and Mogul said. When I was using WModem, ipconfig returns a true ext ip. Much appreciated if anyone can help me to get WModem or some similar prog that will let your computer use the phone as modem. Thnx |
Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
I start this thread because I just want to know why no one here is interested in WModem's advantage of providing a public IP and no NAT, much more easy for VPN setup, less latency, less phone cpu usage, etc.
See http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=27313&page=2 for more reasons So the actual WModem prog might be out of date, but the c0ncept is as good as ever. So why is everyone asking me to uSe ICS w/TP2? Is it really impossible to do s0mething like WModem on TP2? Much appreciate a good explanation. Thnx Btw, I got the IcS to work on my TP2 and as expected I couldn't use it to get to my wrkplace VPN like I could using WModem on TP |
Re: Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
wow man... started another i see
|
Re: Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
Like I say, I need a good explanation or solution. And I am not getting either
As I suspected, the ICS on my TP2 did have trouble w/ getting thr my wrkplace VPN. Major impact on my workflow since I can't as easily work away from office now:(. Once again much appreciate any good input |
Re: Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
well WModem is shareware isnt it?? if so, its not like you can give it to us so we can play around with it
**EDIT** you said you were using the "old mogul hack" all this time.. even though it worked on the tP1 as it was.. did you try this one http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.p...90&postcount=1 which is what TP1 users were told to do?? |
Re: Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
wmodem can be downloaded from my first post.in this thread.
|
Re: Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
didnt answer me, is it free?? also did you try my link above? and heres another, but im not gonna register to see the link to the fix http://mobilesoftwareworld.forumotio...ivers-t224.htm
also you have to realize it may not be compatible in 6.5 sense 2.5.. theres plenty of things that are different and wont work between 6.1, 6.5/2.1 and 6.5/2.5 |
Re: Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
Yes, wmodem is free. HTC included it on alot of phone, sometimes crippled.
The ppcgeeks link you mentioned above leads to the downloading ot the same set of files I am talking about. I couldn't get into the mobilesoftware link but appear to be same set of files as well Perhaps someone here w/ TP2 and still have6.1 don't mind testing it out. I have a feeling that it might still work on TP2 w/ 6.1? If someone has TP2 w/ custom 6.5 rom don't mind trying it? I can't say for sure but I do believe that it is possible because when I ran WModem on the TP2 my computer did detect the TP2 as HTC modem. It just that after I initiate the dial-in, it get stucked on the user verification screen shown on the pc. The phone itself does appear to initiate some sort of attempt to connect Because of what I've seen, I have a feeling that HTC/Sprint might have changed something, possibly in registry. They've done some real shi#*y things like taking away the taskmanager at the top and hiding the owner'info from today screen, both ot these I've been able to get back with some work. I am sure there are more deVious stupid things they did to 6.5 which I've not got to Like I said in another thread about all phone GPS are not equal. All tethering methods are not equal. For most people I agree that tethering w/ ICS or WModem, probably make no difference or probably easier to setup w/ ICs. However If anyone ever tether and takes advantage ot the benefits (and they are definitely a lot) of wmodem method, they would miss that. The benefit of a non-NAT'ed public ip w/ WModem have lots of benefits esp w/ VPN and firewall. And should I even mention decreased latency and slightly fasten speed? (I confirmed this w/ testing to the same sites on DSLreports yesterday by connecting my old TP w/wmodem back on my acc.and then switching back to TP2 on my acc) I don't think I am alone in seeing the benefit of wmodem method. If anyone else wants to know the advantage ot tethering w/ wmodem, see the link on my first post in this thread as well as this link: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...ghlight=WModem If anyone knows of another way which offer the same benefits as WModem, let me know. Thnx Edit: tried usbmodem (the prog mentioned at begin of mogul thread).Doesn't even put phone into modem mode. Computer detect TP2 as phone instead ot modem and trigger TP2 to ask what type of usb connection you want. So WModem is still closer as it does make TP2 looks like a modem to the computer, Now I need to Manually uninstall usbmodem as it refuses to uninstall :(. |
Re: Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
have you tried going back to sprint 6.1/2.1 and seeing if it works???
edit, I was actually gonna try on my custom ROM if it works, but that's a lot of freaking steps to tether. I can see why you are having a hard time finding people who will try it. |
Re: Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
Quote:
Yes it is a lot of work but the benefit of a non NAT ip and decreased lateney and increased speed and lower phone cpu usage totally worth it. Once you rip the benefit you definite put up w/ extra steps. Much appreciate any helps/input |
Re: Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
I usually just use CMInternetSharing to provide a WiFi hotspot, rather than USB tethering (unless I need to charge my phone). But try this program out for USB. I have it installed and it does work great.
I'm also on Sprint SERO, stock 6.5 ROM. I recall WModem from my 6700 and Mogul days and this program does the trick, but is actually more convenient since no programs need to be loaded on the computer, and you don't need to "dial out" from the computer either. http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=115051 It does require a few regedits but no big deal. Let me know if you have questions. |
Re: Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
sl8763,
Thanks for reply, but I am not sure if you completely read or understood my (long) msg: I actually NEED the dial-up network setup, like the old way because I need the non NAT public IP. ICS does not get me thr my wrkplace VPN! Yes, I do know ICS is easier but that's not giving you the benefit of a non NAT public ip. I feel like I need to provide an explanation of non NAT public IP!? Hope I am not harsh sounding toward anyone but once again I will repeat: Anything related to tethering with ICS won't help what I need! Thny |
Re: Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
well look man.. this is your 3rd thread about this at least...
if YOUR not willing to flash to 6.1 and give it a shot, why are we still trying to help you... we came up with, its probably not supported in 6.5/2.5.. end of story... if YOUR not willing to do some investigating yourself, then i guess you really dont want it to work all that bad... weve tried.. but none of us seem willing to do a 30 step process for an outdated app none of us use.. and quit talking about speed and advantages too please... it has one advantage, the thing you need it for.. you dont know anything about speed, latency, ics, etc since you havent used any of the other apps available to test with... Ive personally tried helping you for almost 24hrs now.. im far from the only helpful person here, but give it a rest already please.. like i said.. YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO TRY SOME THINGS.. not really fair of you to critize/down the methods WE use, when were all tethering just fine and YOUR not... YOU want US to do YOUR work for YOU.. assume some responsibility for the app you claim to sooooo desperately wanna use.. **edit** 1) if you knew how to back up your device, a hard reset/flash wouldnt even be an issue 2) doesnt the benefits of flashing to 6.1 and getting your app to work, out weight the benefits of NOT flashing and NOT having your app work?? - itll take 30min to be up and running again.. hell youve spent 24hrs already looking for a solution... whats 30min-1hr to go try something out... |
Re: Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
Sorry wildpig, I did read your posts but I guess I missed that part. Hope you find a solution. Have you searched or posted on xda-developers? Since that's a more technical crowd, they may understand the details of your situation better. With any luck a developer may be able to suggest a fix or even create one for you.

Re: Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
boredandtattooed
I am going to downgrade bk to 6.1. I do hve a gut feeling that it might work. but i am not sure what other things i might "break" by going back to 6.1. GPS was a real shit on TP w/ 6.1 and it seems a lot better now on TP2 6.5 but I hv\avent tested that completely yet.... I just want to throw out what i said in my post hoping that either someone has already gone thr and might have an answer. Just surprised at the answers. Seems no one has. I feel like I could make an analogy to apple iphone: yes, iphone is definitely easier to use compared to WM phones (like ICS is easier to set up), yes maybe that's why it sells by the millions and WM phones are not. But which one is "really" better? Well, we all know the answer ;) Easier is not always the better answer..... The way that Wmodem works gives you a lot more flexibility over the way ICS works. I know for most people it doesn't matter, but that like saying for most people iphone is easier to use than WM.... (you get my point)... I am not hesistant to try just about anything. And like I say, i am going to downgrade to 6.1 and it will probably work, but just wondering if anyone else has any other suggestions... And even if downgrading back to 6.1 works, I still would like to know why it does not work on 6.5? It;s always good to know what changes HTC and sprint make and what exactly the changes affect..... |
Re: Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
Today by coincidence I setup a wmodem for my friend for their netbook so they could use securemote and timbukto pro vpn...
I tested both ICS and htc wifi router and obviously they didn't work but I tried... Then I setup wmodem 2.5 i think it was or 2.25..it was on wm6.5.3 and using XP.. FYI this doesn't mean it won't work in windows 7/vista and wm6.1/wm6.5 it probably will just giving you what I used. I installed the drivers using the wmodem driver installer..and then set it to dial #777 and same as you I got stock on the verification. So here is what I did to fix it: I went to configure the modem and enabled: hardware flow control modem error control modem compression show terminal window I also set the speed to max. I also disabled asking for user login in the dialer. I then reset the phone and enable data connection through IE to make sure it works...then I went to wmodem, configured APN to "Sprint", connected wire and ran it..it gave error to disable the data connection..so I went to disable it in command manager..then went back to wmodem and ran it.. then I dialed and it ran, it gave me a black window because I enabled terminal which I just clicked Continue button and it went through, internet worked and most important VPN worked :) So try the above and see if it works for you. It may have been only one of the things on top that made the difference but he above is exactly what I did to get it working. |
Re: Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
My kids were trying to use the home wifi to connect to their nintendo ds lites, but the ds lites don't support the security I have set up on our router, they want wep keys. So I thought I would try with wmwifirouter or htc wifi and even though both showed the tp2 for wifi spots, neither one could connect.
So I can feel your frustration, but if no one is using the program, no one can help. looks like you got a solution hope it works for you. For me, I think I will just change the security on the home router to WEP so they can connect. Just means everything else in the house has to be reconfigured for it (wii, 4 laptops, etc). |

I am traveling on the road right now so don't have the computer w/XP. The computer I am using W/ win7 I couldn't find the option to enable terminal-window. I did do the other stuffs regarding the modem Settings in 7 though. I am still stuck in same place unfortunately :( , but there is now definitely @ least some hope. will keep working... Where do you go to enable terminal in XV? Is it same area as modem config? Much appreciate everyone input. I know this is not what most people to connect to internet and even myself agree that ICS isreally easier to setup and use, but it'S not what you need sometimes |

Just to confirm aside from that you followed the direction exactly? and dialing #777? also did you disable windows mobile center? |
Re: Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
If you use Dial Up Networking (DUN) to connect to the internet on your phone, you are more likely to transmit the DUN NAI when you authenticate. If they see you authenticate using your DUN NAI, they can charge you for it.
I did this a few years ago and to ensure I wasn't detectable I would change the DUN NAI in EPST to match the regular NAI. That being said Bluetooth DUN should work without any additional software if the DUN NAI has been changed. It will also give you a non-NATed public IP. An annoyance that I have had with DUN is that you have to turn off all internet bound applications including Activesync before you dial up, otherwise they tend to disconnect your session. In terms of VPN, I use PPTP to connect to work and never had any issues with it over ICS. Now if your company uses IPSEC, the protocol is a bit more complex and does not like traversing NAT. |

Got pretty much everything except the terminal window. No go still.:( But will keep working @ it . Your friend did have a Sprint TP2 right? Did you use the ICS and MWodem fix.cab or only make the reg changes (only the ones specifically mentioned in the mogu thread) manually? Trying to see exactly what made the difference since the symptom of being stucked @ the login you described exactly like me so it must be the same prob to start w/ Quote:

here is what I used: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=27313 I did not use the hack but it is possible it was built in... as for ICS was pre-installed on the rom...wmodem wasn't WModemDriverInstaller.zip for drivers WModem_2.25_Cab.zip for cab And yes I was also stuck at login..the I did the changes I mentioned before..then I reset the phone..on boot I ran IE to get internet..once I got internet I plugged it in..made sure I still had internet..ran wmodem..it gave an error to disable internet connection..so I went in comm manager and just unclicked Data..went back to wmodem and started it again and then dialed and it went through... When you dial do you see the data connection on your tp2? Also for record I was doing USB and not Bluetooth conenction |
Re: Why is everyone so against the WModem concept for TP2?
got back home. tried on xp. still doesnt work w/ terminal window enabled :(
0nly thing I did which mightbe different Was I did install the ics and wmodem fix.cab . Don't know if that interfere w/ it or not, Might try to see if i can undo or hand reset phone even. If anyone else here have wmodem working on their tp2 w/ 6.5 rom or have any input ,much appreciate to hear from you. I know its a very small minority buf I know you are out there, thnx |
