Best Navigation Software for TP2?

I am currently living abroad most of the time, and would like to know which navigation software users would recommend for turn by turn directions while in the United States on my TP2. I do not want to use software that is dependent on a network connection because some of the places I travel have spotty to non-exhistant coverage.

Thanks

I tried to find download/buy information on their website but found nothing ... where did you find it ?

Anyone tried Copilot Live 9 ?

This is actually one of the things that could keep me from moving to the Android platform in the near future. I agree that the future of Windows mobile is not looking too bright, but I have a considerable investment in software for Windows mobile:scratch:

I was looking at the iGo, but they only ship it on memory cards preinstalled. And it is not exactly like they use the 16gb memory cards either. If there is a way to move the software to a larger memory card I would definitely consider it. I personally use iGo for European maps which is sold as a program which is then installed on the memory card.

I like TomTom, tried Igo but the graphic and menu navigation can't compare to TomTom

The new bing has turn by turn directions to compete with Android and google maps. try it out. Worked good so far for me and even better because it's free.

NDrive looks like it uses the same maps and a similar interface to iGo8. This looks like a good option for those who have been unable to find a way to purchase iGo8 for download. This is all based on just a cursory examination of their website...

Possibly man, I use both and Ndrive is easier to manipulate....

Garmin Mobile XT is awesome. The maps are stored on the SD card so a data connection is not required. The new Bing turn by turn nav is cool too but it uses data.

From what I've read in the last couple of years, iGuidance and iGo use the same engine and maps. Very minor graphics differences. Pretty much the same software. Not complaining, I would buy iGuidance without a second thought if I was looking for a GPS package, if only it were available without the 2,4,8GB card limitation. (YAARR!) :-\"

The FREE Sprint Navigation for me, been using it since the Mogul and TP1. Unfortunately only for Sprint TP2's though. Has taken me all over the country. MY BAD, you said, "not requiring carrier service." How can a true GPS function without carrier service or GPS polling? Without that it would just be a 3D Map that is not really following you, if I am not mistaken.

Garmin Mobile XT has worked well for me for the last couple of years. I have it installed on a 16gb card now so storage isn't an issue. I only wish I could update the maps.

Sprint nav, Gmap, binq all have a common Achille's heel: They all require you to have active datalink for map downloading in realtime.

TP, Titan have GPS which can function in both standalone mode (you can turn the phone connection and datalink off and gps still works, just take longer to acquire sats and possibly not as accurate) as well as the usual assisted mode

Which is why it's good to have nav prog w/ dataset on yr phone like igo or garmin

I agree with you 100% Another good reason is if you ever travel to a place where you would actually pay for data roaming. I was in Poland last week and it would have cost me around .01 kb which sounds inexpensive until you figure 1mb would cost you $10.24 It doesn't take long to download several mb of data while using navigation software requiring a data connection.

Right on! This is one reasons why I don't want to upgr to EVo,beside that it's not a world phone. There is no Igo or Garmin for Android yet. iphone does trumph Android on this one 'cause there is igo for iphone. Though I expect same for Android soon.

I know we are all into cloud computing but there is definitely something to be said about having the'data on yr hand and not have to rely on the cloud.

Tp2 has a GPS chip‚ therfor it is a stand alone Nav system and works w/o carrier's service. No data or towers required.

Re: Best Navigation Software for TP2?

I'll cast another vote for iGuidance by iNav. Great program and I have been using it for years. I also think they have worldwide maps available and sinc eit is a standalone program, no data/network connection is required, just your onboard gps.
In addition to that, you can also use an external bluetooth gps "puck" - I use the hollux and it works great.

It's a pity that such basic knowledge regarding gps is not common among a lot of people out there who will get duped into thinking all gps in phones are all the same.

I think it's these things which require consumer naiveness which allows certain companies to sell products which doesn't have multitask and cut&paste.

Need I say more?:)

yea, I got it during that sale too but I don't even bother installing it anymore.

The maps in that piece of garbage are at least 10 years out of date (that's probably why it was so cheap), I can't believe they still sell that POS.

It does have a super nice interface, but the maps make it totally useless IMHO.

GarminXT is awesome IMHO.

You would be surprised at how few people understand the differences between the GPS functions of Sprint Nav, Bing, Gmaps, etc. versus Iguidance, iGo, etc. which can be stand alone systems. I think many people understood it better when Palm and Window phones would have to buy the separate GPS bluetooth puck to go with a Memory card. When it became available on the phones themselves we didn't get the memo on the differences...LOL
Consider yourself one of the lucky minority along with others who have offered positive insight to this topic who have been able to decipher the differences. Now I can join that minority and educate others in a positive manner.

Got Igo8.3 installed w/ TTS. Worked great s0 far. See separate thread for detail.

Was using Igo2006 on TP but couldn't get that to work so I had to upgrade to Ig08.3 :)

The Bing app is pretty good, although the Bing app can be really stupid sometimes when it's trying to find your destination.

Guess that's proof of sprint network coverage being real good?!

Just pray you don't get to areas w/ no EvDo signal, then bing is useless
