I'm looking into buying a Touch Pro2, but i have some questions.

Hi guys. I'm new here and this is my first post..

I'm looking into buying a new HTC Touch Pro 2. After reading its reviews, i seem to like it.. But now I have a lot of questions in mind..

So here they are: http://www.viewty-lg.com/Smileys/yarex2/cheesy.gif

1. I've read that there are 2 kinds of the Touch Pro 2?.. The GSM one and the CDMA one if i'm not mistaken? What's the difference between the two? and which one should I get?.. I'm from the Philippines by the way. http://www.viewty-lg.com/Smileys/yarex2/smiley.gif

2. I might get one off ebay, so usually they are T-Mobile, Sprint, etc. versions. What makes these carrier versions different from the normal HTC one? are they GSM or CDMA? and there's no difference in terms of hardware if i'm not mistaken, just the software right? Am I right that they do not have a front camera?

3. If I get a T-Mobile or Sprint version, can i flash another ROM? I don't to use a carrier ROM. I like the one i see on the reviews on the net. Which one is that?

4. If I get a T-Mobile or Sprint version, do I have to do some unlocking to be able to use my sim card?

5. I know normally it comes with Windows Mobile 6.1. And i know it could be upgraded to 6.5. Would you guys recommend it? Is there an official HTC rom for WM6.5? and does WM6.5 still have TouchFLO3D?

6. Is there a certain version of the Touch Pro 2 I should avoid? something to do with the radio band? I'm afraid it might not work with our cellular networks here, or I may not be able to use it at all.

7. I've read that there are some TP2s that have a 3.5mm earphone jack, and I want one of those. I've read that the Sprint version has it. But then I've also read somewhere that the Sprint version needs some special method of unlocking to be able to use other sims?

I hope these things get cleared up in my head. Thanks in advance! http://www.viewty-lg.com/Smileys/yarex2/wink.gif

This would depend on which signal you carrier is running. you will need to call them and see what they are running and the frenquency.

2. I might get one off ebay, so usually they are T-Mobile, Sprint, etc. versions. no front camera its on the back of the phone

3. If I get a T-Mobile or Sprint version, can i flash another ROM? I don't to use a carrier ROM. I like the one i see on the reviews on the net. Which one is that?

Please see http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=93252 for CDMA unlocking and then http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=95375 for flashing the rom. ROMS can be found here http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=98 .. remember this is CDMA only for all of these links

4. If I get a T-Mobile or Sprint version, do I have to do some unlocking to be able to use my sim card?

use this site http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=98 for CDMA phones and this site http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=490 for GSM phones

5. I know normally it comes with Windows Mobile 6.1. And i know it could be upgraded to 6.5. Would you guys recommend it? Is there an official HTC rom for WM6.5? and does WM6.5 still have TouchFLO3D?

Yes u can upgrade just pick your rom version that you want to flash to from one of the sites.

6. Is there a certain version of the Touch Pro 2 I should avoid? something to do with the radio band? I'm afraid it might not work with our cellular networks here, or I may not be able to use it at all.

Yes ... CDMA and GSM are 2 different bands (2 different phones) .. with in those signals they also run off different frenquencys call your carrier to see what they run off of.

7. I've read that there are some TP2s that have a 3.5mm earphone jack, and I want one of those. I've read that the Sprint version has it. But then I've also read somewhere that the Sprint version needs some special method of unlocking to be able to use other sims?

Yes the sprint one does have this hook up. all unlocking info is in the links i provided. just make sure you get the correct phone for your service.

thanks for the reply. :)

i believe my carrier uses GSM because I use a sim card. Does this mean i should not get the CDMA version?

Re: I'm looking into buying a Touch Pro2, but i have some questions.

The Sprint TP2 is a world phone. It does have a GSM sim as well. If you buy the Sprint phone, you need to make sure you only put CDMA ROMS on it. The links above should also tell you how to use the phone in GSM only.

The Tmobile or AT&T versions are GSM phones. GSM roms are found over at http://www.xda-developers.com/. You need to make sure you only put GSM roms on a GSM version of the phone.

so, whichever version of the TP2 i get, I would be able to get it working here with the correct unlocking and ROMs?

and lets say I get a Sprint version. When i get it, what should i do first, and what next? Theres the sim unlock thing, and that hardspl thing i really dont understand..

sorry for my newbieness.. my last WM phone was an XDA mini S. :)

Re: I'm looking into buying a Touch Pro2, but i have some questions.

OP...basically, the the way you can tell the difference between a CDMA & GSM is that, like previous answers said, GSM uses SIM card. case in point....your carrier sun cellular uses a SIM so it's a GSM network. bayantel span (which i don't know for the life of me why they call a wireless landline) runs on a CDMA network. but don't go running buying a Sprint or Verizon tp2 thinking that you can take it to bayantel and have the ESN flashed over on their network. they're not gonna do it. i've asked already.

if i were you pare...just get the GSM TP2 since Philippines is dominantly GSM. but if you're really gonna spend all that $$$ on a tp2...why not just get the HD2 from t-mo without the contract? it costs the same as a brand new tp2...but a newer model.

like i said...just get the GSM version of the TP2. but if you do decide to get the CDMA version...the sim device already comes unlock for international use so you don't have to do anything to use it. but as far as using cooked roms, you would need to hardspl unlock your phone. hardspl pretty much just unlocks your device's radio so you can use an un-official rom on it. you can get the answer on how to do that on the reply to your no. 3 question. but do be aware of what you're doing when flashing to another rom. if you mess up, you'll have a very expensive and shiny new brick and/or paperweight. oh and unlocking your device's radio and flashing to a custom rom voids the warranty of the device.

hello mojary :)

i plan to buy one on ebay kasi, and the ones i find are usually CDMA ones. and usually the ones there are from sprint, or t-mobile.. and i want to get the sprint version because of the 3.5mm earphone jack. but the sprint one is CDMA, right?
So if i get a CDMA one, theres no need to unlock anything? I just simply insert the sim card?
What if I want to flash to the latest HTC official (non-operator) ROM, do i need to hard spl?

And may I know the advantages and disadvantages if i get a GSM or CDMA one? Why do you recommend I get the GSM one?..

The HD2? I want a real QWERTY keyboard. :)

thanks for the replies. :)

sprint is CDMA. ok...if you're after the 3mm jack, best bet mo is sprint. yung mga GSM does not come with that feature. and yes, it already comes sim unlocked for international use. so ilagay mo lang sim mo and you're all good to go. for data, if sun offers data, you'll need to get the settings from them. but i dont know if sun runs on a 3g network. you may only end up running with gprs on data even if you have a 3g network.

if want to run custom roms, you'll need to do a hardspl unlock. you can find out about it here http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=93867 - if you get the sprint tp2, make sure get the unlocker for CDMA.

i recommended you get the GSM because like i stated, philippines dominantly use GSM. but you can't go wrong with the headphone jack on the cdma version though. the difference between the two networks doesn't really matter there in the philippines...because almost all cell phone devices run only on GSM. but here in the states, the differences is the technology.

but do i have to do something pa about the ESN thing? or talagang diretso ko na ilalagay yung sim? will the sprint ROM accept my sun cellular sim?

Sun doesnt have 3G here sa cebu, but soon they will roll it out. It's just a matter of configuring the settings for it to work, right?

im just nervous because i might get one, but when it gets here, ill run into problems like not being able to get it to work with sun cellular, and etc..

thanks for the tiyaga, mojary.. newbie talaga kasi :)

no need to do anything with the ESN. when you get your tp2, just pop in the sim card and you're all set. again, the tp2 already comes sim unlocked for foreign sim cards. your network settings will be defaulted to "Automatic". make sure you select GSM. if you leave the network settings on automatic, since it is primarily a cdma device, it'll search for a cdma network to connect to first before searching for GSM when you are in a dead spot. if you set it to gsm, it'll only look for that network's signal. will help save battery this way.

when you get your tp2...before doing anything major on it, make sure you read up on all the things you can about it (in this forum and over at xda-forums). after you've gotten your fair share of information overload...read and read again. we were all new with the tp2 at one point so don't feel bad about asking the questions. but make sure before posting a new thread, remember that the search button is our good friend. search first...because i can assure you that once you get your phone, the questions you're gonna ask have been asked and answered. welcome to the forum btw. you'll find that the members here are more than willing to give you the help you'll need.

as for other tweaks and tricks you can do on the phone...just come back to this forum when you get the device. it'll be easier to explain them when you actually have the device in front of you while you're installing/doing the tweaks so you can see what these files actually do. but feel free to read up on them so you have an idea. start here http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=78019 - or here http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=88640. some of the tweaks may not apply to you depending on the use.

thanks a lot!

i read a lot na rin kasi sa xda forums but some of my questions were still left unanswered. thanks for clarifying them for me. the next step now is to get an actual unit.
by the way, do you know kung where dito sa philippines ang service center ng htc? especially here sa cebu. I'm worried na kung i have problems and i need repairs, i cant get it fixed.. just like my old htc wizard..

thanks for the welcome.. :)

I've read about the data thing that might not be compatible with my carrier's? Why is that so? Which ones might not be compatible?

Thanks :)

which data thing? lots of things regarding data. you talking abt accessing data in general? wifi router? tethering? elaborate pls.

Re: I'm looking into buying a Touch Pro2, but i have some questions.

your data will go through the sim card, so I don't see why it wouldn't work. if you know which bands of gsm they use in the phillipines, you can compare it to the phones to make sure your band is supported. I'll try to find it for you.

looks like sun cellular uses gsm band 1800, according to the specs on the sprint tp2, it is a supported gsm band.
my phone (sprint), does show support for band 1800 in the settings, so a cdma us tp2 should work with proper sim card (sprint, verizon, us cellular).

yup...that's correct. like i said in one of my earlier post, you may not get 3g. that's including when sun cellular rolls out 3g in your area. you'll most likely just get gprs connection.

yup...that's correct. like i said in one of my earlier post, you may not get 3g. that's including when sun cellular rolls out 3g in your area. you'll most likely just get gprs connection.

why not?.. which model should i look for if i want to be able to use 3g?.. i dont actually use 3g now, pero just to make it future-proof... :)

Re: I'm looking into buying a Touch Pro2, but i have some questions.

you'd probably just have to bite the bullet and get a unlocked one like this:
http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Unlocked-S.../dp/B002C2S272

though an at&t or tmobile version might have what you need too.

edit, this is all I could find on it:
Phone: CDMA dual band digital phone with EVDO Rev. A and 1xRTT for data. Also has a SIM card slot for GSM quad band world roaming 850/900/1800/1900MHz bands with EDGE and 2100MHz 3G HSDPA for Europe and Asia. The SIM slot is unlocked for use with any GSM carrier but the phone doesn't work in the US with American GSM carriers (e.g. T-Mobile and AT&T).

looks like if sun cellular's 3g is gonna be on 2100mhz, then you'll get 3g, otherwise, you'll get edge.

Re: I'm looking into buying a Touch Pro2, but i have some questions.

im not really sure why it only gets gprs only. but im guessing its because the fact that the sprint tp2 is a primarily cdma, even though it can work on GSM, only one of them can connect at 3g speed. which in this case, its the cdma radio on EVDO. of course this may not be the answer. just my answer to make myself feel better because i would like to get 3g when i use the phone internationally too. hope may not be lost though. there may be a small chance of getting 3g. the only reason why i said that is because there was a member a few months ago that took his tp2 somewhere in asia. he posted that although majority of the time connections was gprs, depending where he was in that particular country, he was able to get 3g connection. but i recall him saying had to do with the network as well.

nrfitchett44 may be correct. if you really want to be 3g capable when you get it in cebu, you might have to shell out extra to get the european gsm version.

Re: I'm looking into buying a Touch Pro2, but i have some questions.

i've been looking around, and i see that the sprint, at&t, or t-mobile ones are a lot cheaper.. i guess it's up to me now if i want to shell out more just to get 3g working..

so to sum it up:

the unlocked version:
-more expensive
-3g will work
-front camera
-no 3.5mm jack

carrier versions:
-cheaper
-3g might not work
-no front camera
-3.5mm jack (sprint version)

am i right? everything else is the same right? and i wont have any trouble getting the carrier versions to work with my network?

many of the major establishments like malls and restaurants have wifi.. but sometimes they are locked, and if they are open, they are usually slow because many people are using them.. but i dont really complain since it's for free anyway.. :)

im just thinking, that now at the time of unlimited calls and texts, there may come a time that there will be unlimited internet access too, and i might not be able to take advantage of it.. i intend to keep this phone for a long time.. because i dont really buy phones a lot since new models come out really quick.. but anyway if i really do need 3g, ill just get a new phone then..

ok...based on nrfitchett's podt edit, i found this blog article from a couple of years ago. looks like there may be hope yet for your just beyond reach 3g connection with sun. they were 1 of the 4 telecom company to awarded a license to operate 3g between 10 to 2100MHz according to the article below.

if you were to ever come to america you wouldn't be able to use the phone on anything other than sprint if you got a sprint cdma phone. That is unless you unlocked it for sim card use which costs like 30$ i believe?

yes from what i have learned(I may be incorrect) - The sprint tp2 is internationally sim unlocked but the sim is locked in America only.

Re: I'm looking into buying a Touch Pro2, but i have some questions.

yup..
im so excited and i'm already reading about which rom to use.. what roms do you guys use?..

and im still kinda confused at the process of flashing a custom cdma rom..
first step is hard-spl? no need to sim unlock right?
and then flash the rom after?

Re: I'm looking into buying a Touch Pro2, but i have some questions.

hey guys.. just an update. i got my TP2 already. HSDPA works! :D

but im not so impressed with the stock Sprint WM6.5 ROM because on my first bootup, it immediately crashed. ***.exe has encountered an error. It happens once in a few days. i'm still out of town, and when i get back, i'd probably reflash to a custom rom. :)
