Task29...a explanation.

Ok, I have seen a few questions around the forums asking about Task29, so with this post I hope to answer all.

Q: What is Task29?
A: While the exact details of what Task29 does is beyond the scope of this post, in short what it does is wipe the RAM on your device.

Q: Why would I use Task29?
A: When flashing custom ROM's, you will find after a lot of flashes that things are buggy. You can help most of these bugs disappear when you do a clear storage. However, after many flashes, clear storage doesn't seem to clear all bugs.

Q: So what does Clear Storage do?
A: When you flash a ROM, you overwrite the data on you RAM chip with new data. Sometimes data that might be on a block in one ROM may not exist in another ROM. As a result, since the data doesn't exist in the second ROM, you don't overwrite it. That data then interferes with the new ROM. Clear Storage attempts to "wipes" all the data off the chip...but not all of it. Comes close, but there is still old data sometime.

Q: What is the difference between Clear storage and a Hard Reset with the button combo?
A: A Clear Storage, for reasons beyond the scope of this post, clears more data then doing a Hard Reset with the button combo. Both methods clear all data.

Q: What does "The Flash Dance" do?
A: Since stuff still can be left behind even after a clear storage, you sometimes need to flash your SP's (Service Providers) Stock ROM. The stock RUU goes through Task28 before the flash. Task28 clears FATFS (storage memory), Task29 clears BINFS (where our XIP is and the files we cooked in to a rom). So technically, flashing stock is even better then this...more info1, more info2
Q: All of this was great, what does it have to with Task29?
A: Task29 "wipes" EVERY SINGLE block with blank data. After running Task29, you should not be able to boot past the splash screen! Sine you wiped the entire chip (instead of overwriting with a different ROM)

Q: OMG, I did Task29 and now I can't bot into windows to flash a new ROM.
A: Establish a active-sync connection by 1) Going into bootloader from power off by pushing and holding Power+Volume down until you see the tricolor screen. Connect your phone to you PC, wait till it says USB on the bottom, flash as normal. Or 2) Place the rhodimg.nbh (orginally named ruu_signed.nbh) on the root of the storage card and go into bootloader using above method.

Q: What is that I hear about Radio flashing etc?
A: Task29 runs from a RUU just like a custom ROM/Radio. It needs to flash something, since we don't want to use a ROM, we can use 1 of 2 things...a Radio or a Splash Screen.

Q: Can I just flash my current radio? Or must I change to a different one?
A: You can use your current one if you want.

Q: Should I re-flash the Radio or the Splash Screen?
A: I would HIGHLY recommend only re-flashing the Splash Screen. One of the ways to brick a phone is a bad radio flash. Splash Screens are much safer.

Q: Can you make this simple for me?
A: Flash this. No radio, nothing. All packed up for you (p.s. it does the bootscreen). Just unzip and flash like a ROM.

Q:Step by Step please.
A: 1)Place phone in bootloader. (From power off state, press and hold volume down, then press and release power)
2) Connect phone to computer
3) Run the RUU linked above (first it unpacks, then it asks you some basic questions/steps)
a) First screen, just place a check in the box, click next
b) Second screen, place check in the box, click next. Please have a bit of battery (at least 20%) before you do this!
c) Third screen it flashes the bootscreen.
d) Forth it gives you a all done message.
4) When RUU finishes, place phone back in bootloader and flash ROM.

Q: Do I need to be Radio-Unlocked?
A: You need to be HSPL Unlocked...which if you are flashing ROM's you are. Nothing else.

Q: Where can I find the OFFICAL Task29 thread?
A: Here.

P.S. - Please note that there is no "readme" included in the RUU that Ziggy provides.

1) what is MTTY?

2) Is it advisable to do this occasionally, every 'x' flashes?

3) is this Rhodium specific?

thanks - good info (the extra info links were helpful also)

1) in short, the old way to do this. But, you had to deal with drivers...which didn't like to work. You could do more with mtty though.
2) only if you are having weird bugs. Or whenever.
3) this one is, however mtty can be used with almost any htc device i know of.

After this Task 29 explanation, I wish my "THANKS" button didn't go away after clicking on it once - because this is so good I would click on it about 50 times. Guess that's why the button goes away, huh . . .

Uh oh

I did Task29, and my connection to my PC is missing. My Ipod Touch is still able to be recognized so it doesn't seem to be a PC or USB issue. Same USB cord I was using previously for my phone. I get the HTC white screen and no connection at all. I hold the Power and Volume Down button and get nothing , no tri color screen no beeping , no rebooting, just sore fingers. I pull the battery out, wait a minute , put it back in HTC white boot screen and no connection no changes when I hold power and volume down. I don't have a card reader so do I now own an expensive paper weight? :) Please any help or assistance will be greatly appreciated.

i just did task 29 with a rhodimg.nbh on the sd card and it gave issues. id say always remeber to remove the card first if your planning a sd flash afterwards.

With phone off, push+hold down volume down. Then push+hold power button until tri-color screen. It sounds like you are pushing power button first.

heh, we've all been there before. From the way it's written in the first post, I can see how you might think it was power and then volume. Glad you're up and running.

Anyone know if there is anything really with this, about not having an SD in the phone, with the rhodimg.nbh in the root folder?

when i ran the exe for task 29 while there was a rhodimg.nbh on the storage card, as soon as it hit the bootloader mode, it just stopped task29 and started to flash the rom on my card and task 29 failed. i got the message on windows7 the the program had not installed properly. it didnt screw anything up, but deffinitly didnt work right.

He is correct. This RUU first calls a flash, then after does Task29. As apposed to a stock rom, which calls task 28 then calls a flash. Work to make it call task29 first in in progress...

Re: Task29...a explanation.

So is it possible to have an SD card with Task 29 on it to wipe the device, and then swap cards to flash the ROM and do everything via the SD cards?

MordyT 04-12-2010 03:49 PM

Wirelessly posted (HTC Touch Pro2: Opera/9.80 (Windows Mobile; WCE; Opera Mobi/WMD-50433; U; en) Presto/2.4.13 Version/10.00)

No. Task29 used to only be able to do with mtty (which requires drivers which are a pain). It got hex-edited into a RUU (bypassing mtty and its need for drivers. The RUU doesn't flash task29, it flashes and then does task 29. A rom is flashed, so you can flash through sd, but since the RUU is doing task29, no way around that. It doesn't matter hat you flash, the RUU is key here...

Thank You MordyT. Thanks button hit.

I just ran taks29 on my Sprint TP2, went into bootloader, and then flashed a ROM.

When I tried to make a call I got a message I never heard before:
"Welcome to Verizon. You're phone cannot be authenitcated at this time."

Do I have to "flash a radio" or do something to the radio settings now?
If so, can someone please post instrunctions to what I have to do?
Or a link?

Thank you.

Re: Task29...a explanation.

Ok, just to be clear ( i know, dp, shoot me)
All that happened is that task 29 got hacked into a RUU - therefor no more need for mtty and its drivers. The ruu still needs to do something - flash a splash or radio - but tit is the RUU that is important...

I am having difficulty. I can not get the phone into bootloader. With the phone off I hold the down volume button and press the top power button as shown on the YouTube video and nothing happens. If I hold the down volume and press the End/Power button it comes on to a screen that says "Touch Pro 2" and nothing more.

I called Verizon and they had me hold down volume + Send and press Power/End and same result "Touch Pro 2"

Any thoughts on getting back into bootloader?

sounds like you flashed a ROM that had verizon carrier provisioning on it. you need to reflash the custom ROM and make sure you run sprint provisioning.

*228 is a verizon thing. what rom did you flash, and did you provision it for sprint? most custom roms that arent carrier specific need to be set up for a certain network.

Thanks for responding.
I went with the "most stable" ROM from Zone23 in this thread bedcuase it has the newest version of HTC sense.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...96#post1694996

I didn't provision it to any carrier because I don't know how.

Re: Task29...a explanation.

usually on first boot, a provisioning cab will run asking you to pick your carrier, the phone will do the rest.

it runs from your computer with your phone connected to it. I don't think there is a sdcard version that will work.

You are correct, per Ziggy, this has to be run from the computer (activesync) - it's a modified ruu file. A tip though, make sure there isn't a RHODIMG file on your SD card (I do since I flash from my card).... the task 29 won't run if you have that........ I just took out my mem card when I ran Task 29 and it worked like a charm! :-)

Read on original task29 thread over at XDA that they had tried it on a touch pro1, just used a touch pro1 radio.Wondering if someone could make a touch pro version with boot splash instead of radio.
