contact issues with sms

when typing in a contact for an sms it normally lists the contacts under that letter, oddly now when typing it keeps the letters ive entered before the name after i choose the person. another words if i wanna text sacajawea, it will have the recipient as SacSacajawea ... then another issue is if i start to enter a contact lets say i wanna send an sms to some1 whose name starts with an L .. if i delete the string & wanna instead send it to some1 whose name starts with B it only keeps the list of names with letter L to choose from & its a p.i.t.a .... any1 know maybe y this is happening all of a sudden ? i havent done anything that effects sms im aware of .. thanks
