Extract / Convert information from a pim.vol file?

I got my new Touch Pro 2 today (insurance replacement for Touch Pro, which was an insurance replacement for Mogul). I let the guy transfer my contacts from old phone, just to be sure, as I had already backed up my pim.vol file.

When I got home I also grabbed the pim.vol file from the new TP2 before flashing to custom ROM.

Now that I'm on MightyROM, when I paste back in my pim.vol from the TP2 (just to be sure there's no compatibility issues) and reset (with the hole in the back, see end of post).

When it comes back up, all is well, but attempting to access the People tab or Contacts messes up the phone and restarts the UI. If I remove the pim.vol file I transferred over in favor of the one that came with MightyROM, it works fine again.

I can open pim.vol with Wordpad, and see some names and numbers, but it is overall garbage. Is there some program that can pull the contacts of pim.vol into SOMETHING else, even if it means just a clear list that I'd copy back over manually?

PS... I don't think I'm getting the 'extensions' working, since I don't get a prompt when pushing the power button, or see a mark-all-as-read in Inbox. I can't turn off or reset the phone without removing the back cover (unless I'm missing something).
