New TP2 User

Howdy all,

I just got my new TP2 ($190 after tax!) and I'm really interested in modding it to suit my needs.

I did have a question regarding GPS. I have a SERO data plan and I wasn't sure if GPS usage with 3rd party programs or something like GS assist are extra.

I'm also looking for some suggestions on what to install in terms of helpful apps and even custom ROMs.

Thanks in advance!

tonnnnnnns of registry edits & cabs to help tweak the device. there is so much to read about when it comes to knowing what the limits are with it. understand basic tweaks ... get to know your phone & take it from there ... im not 1 of the geniouses around here but have come to understand my device by reading here & exploring my phone

to answer your GPS question: as long as you use a 3rd party app, GPS navigation is no extra monthly charge. (sprint nav and telenav have a monthly fee)
amAze is a good, free GPS app. i personally use tomtom navigator

SERO = ZERO?

the gps will work fine, but the maps have to be downloaded and would be considered data usage

right?

this is true but to my knowledge sprint nav isn't included in SERO. it's an extra $10/month.
i believe it's only included in "everything" plans

when u have sprint sero, nav is included w/sero for free and u get a $10 discount every month as long as the employee u got ur sero thru is still a sprint employee.

my bill was $20 instead of $30 and i had free nav from may-round january, when my friend got laid off... shortly after, i got a call from some1 high up at sprint and he explained all this to me.

i had a instinct s30 on my sero so when i got that call he explained that i either needed to change fones or plans since i would no longer have free nav on my sero and Instinct OS, WebOS, and Android require navigation. i chose to get a tp2 and keep my sero ;) FTW

Not sure if the OP knows the dif between sprint nav and others like tomtom, iguidance, etc. Some 3rd party programs (tomtom, garmin, etc) store maps on the storage card of your phone so they only need a gps signal to function. Others like Sprint Nav, or Google Maps require an internet connection because they access the maps online while you are driving. These programs require you to have a data plan to function. You will be charged for the internet usage if you don't have a plan. Sprint Nav also requires you to sign up for that service individually if you don't get it in an everything plan. I believe the charge is 10 bucks a month. There are better free alternatives out there as mentioned earlier in the thread.

I'm aware of the different GPS programs which is why I was asking in regards to 3rd party GPS apps. My understanding is that sprint nav is not included with SERO even though SERO plans have unlimited data usage.

I'm currently using amAze and Google Maps. amAze is okay but kinda clunky and not very intuitive.

The only issue with goggle maps, is that its not very accurate.

I have quick GPS enabled to help speed up positioning.

One question i have just got my TP2 from sprint and am an old sero user i was playing with the origional rom and clicked navigation and gave it my details ( but in no place did i see a warning about being charged o anything such) and it worked perfectly.i gae it a few addreses to find routes for trying it out and it looked good,

My question is whats the deal? am i gonna be charged for sprint navigation ? i checked my account but dont see any $10 charge for the navigtion and if i have to pay 10 theres no way im gonna use it when i can use google maps and its good enough for me

Might just be the demo which runs out after a week or 2.

if you have the Pro Pack data plan on your SERO, then sprint nav is included in your plan. if you just have the regular Data pack, then you're on the trial period.

Re: New TP2 User

Ohhh tht makes sense as my plan is SERO and its old but i had never tried the sprint navigation program ( i always flashed custom roms as soon as i get my phone i probably dont even spend a few hours on the stock rom and that time is spent searching the forums for a custom rom and charging my battery)

Re: New TP2 User

because there are 2 types of sprint data plans. the regular unlimited data plan and pro pack data plan. if you have SERO, with an added free unlimited data, it's the regular unlimited data plan. the sprint nav is only included in the pro pack.
