Walking in London, with unlimited Data roaming on the VodafoneUK network, getting an HSPDA signal, and using Google Maps with GPS to navigate and search for all the things we wanted to see, for a little over five hours before the battery warning indicator. THAT made our trip (plus having internet for opening hours, tube travel etc...) so worth the price of admission. WOW, it was great and easy to do, a quick glance and I knew where I was and how to get where I was going.

you can get an adapter from 2.5 to 3.5

Was this with the Sprint SIM card or did you buy another SIM and use it? Also, did you do anything to the GSM side (unlock or anything) or is it pretty much stock? Did your phone number change while there or did it stay the same?

I've been curious how these phones work overseas for a while now...

sitting at the club last night listening to the PA's obscure music and looking it up with Midomi is pretty cool.

As someone else mentioned...one of my favorite features is using the phone as a flash drive. I have a tendency to leave my flash drives in computers but when it's my phone...no chance!

Shhhh... it's a brand new top-secret ROM... Only a very select few TP2 users realize that their devices actually can make and receive telephone calls. If I let out the details, I might get a "cease and desist" letter from Microsoft and get banned from PPG. LOL

Indeed...I partly purchased the TP2 because we will be in the UK next Fall for a couple of weeks... I'm interested in any and all info on how the phone "travels". What needs to be done...pitfalls...costs, etc.

To answer the OP, I upgraded from a Motorola Q9c specifically for a better web browsing phone. I am very satisfied with the TP2 web browsing.

Alot of people prefer talking over texting. Texting can be convenient for short messages, but anything over 140 characters is a pain... even for email. Plus alot of people still don't have texting on their phones. I only text because I get it free with my plan. I definitely wouldn't pay extra for it. Texting is a cash-cow for the phone companies.

I find it a bit ironic that before smartphones, PDAs were still a fledgling product (Palm and Windows CE). They really began to take off and become mainstream when cell phones and PDAs were combined into a smartphone. Now that has happened, people take that aspect (phone calls) somewhat for granted and even go as far as dismiss the need to even have that function on your PDA... lol.

LOL, indeed...

The only time I ever actually CALL anyone anymore is if they specifically order me not to text them(yes, there are actually primitives out there without unlimited text! hehe). It's starting to feel wierd to actually TALK to people anymore, it's getting to the point where I'm becoming a creepy shut-in.

I text way more than I talk on the phone. It's not even close. All of my friends text all the time. I hate talking on the phone, lol.

:thumbleft:

Any guy that talks on the phone more than 400 minutes a month not related to business, work, school, or online with Xbox support because of a broken 360 is a GIRLYMAN

Re: what is the most convenient thing you do with your pda?

Texting is definitely a major form of communication nowadays. A friend was telling me how his daughter numbered 19,000+ texts sent/received. He was thanking whatever higher being for unlimited texting plans.

Anyway, for me the most convenience I get from my phone is being able to take my books wherever I am without breaking my back carrying the physical versions. My purse weighs enough, I don't need to add more by carrying my embarrassing novels. Yes, I am that girl in the corner of the bar reading a trashy novel called... TWILIGHT. Joking, joking. But seriously, love my books <3

And of course there's also being able to look up stuff online when I need to discredit the reputation of a friend thinking they're a know-it-all, having my music collection with me when I need to shut out the sounds of screeching kids at the store, having a ton of useless apps in the hopes of one day being the savior in that one unforgettable situation for being useful, and having Google Maps at hand for when I get lost around the corner from my house.

Yay!

With all the popularity of texting I wonder if any of the companies actually offer JUST a text/data plan with no voice.... and if people would really sign up for it?

Verizon offers data and text only for sure - $50/month I believe. I believe sprint does too.

Yeah it's $30 per month on Sprint.

HTC wifirouter is the most amazing tool IMO. It saves me 60 bucks a month not having to pay for internet. Fortunitly in Pittsburgh I get some very formitable and usable data speeds on Sprint. Only problem is I cant use remote desktop.

Honestly, I watch Phillip DeFranco Vids while I am on the can! LAWLS!

Seriously though, my TP2 keeps my life organized. From appointments, to contacts, to email. To much to list really.

So is anyone here signed up for these plans?
Since the voice/data/text plans are more, I'd venture to say that most still are unwilling to get rid of their voice plan, even those "manly" men who say they never talk on their phones... lol.

I don't think anyone said they literally "never" talk on their phone. Just that we text way more than we talk.

There are times when I have to call, say, a furniture store and ask how much something costs, or something like that. But most of my friends and family all text me, and I text them.

before i had a smartphone, i used to check my gmail account at work using the desktop browser, which was bad because of the way the office was situated everyone could see what was on my screen and knew when i was slacking off checking email or browsing the web but NO MORE! I can now do all that on my TP2! and look like i'm working all the time. not only that my productivity actually went up because i spend less time checking email or web (no more of the constant minimizing firefox windows every few seconds someone passes by). basically i get privacy.

Re: what is the most convenient thing you do with your pda?

I've used mine for mainly life management and, really, a little bit of everything.

The reminders help me in keeping my wife and other family members from getting angry at me.

Slingbox and a healthy dose of MP3s help me to release a little during lunch.

TomTom gets me from one job to the next during my workday.

The note pad is always handy when you don't have a scrap piece of paper (that you'll lose anyway) around.

DUN keeps me connected when visiting my relatives in Middle-Of-Howhere, Alabama or Backwater, Mississippi.

The photo album feature keeps me balanced when I'm feeling a little stressed out. Not to mention the camera allows me to capture that WTF moment that always seems to occur when you don't have a normal camera handy.

Plus I'm always looking for and evaluating new software/functionality. It's my digital Swiss Army knife.

...oh yeah, and occasionally I make phone calls or take them.

I'm with you. I don't use that many minutes but having the ability to make cell phone calls with your PDA is so convenient. I remember the days of caring two devices around all the time and how much of a pain that was.

Re: what is the most convenient thing you do with your pda?

I find it faster to text my Wife than call her, if I call she never picks up (She has a crappy ring tone for it and you can barely hear it, the text tone though is very loud) but if I text her she will almost immediately call back or text back go figure.

Yeah, we've come a long way. Heck, even, say, about 5 or 6 years ago or so, back in the Hitachi G1000 days. I think that was the first PDA phone with a full qwerty. Huge brick, and only 1X data (which was the fastest data at the time, nobody had any 3G and 1x was pretty new). Wow, back n those days our Touch Pro 2's with EVDO rev A everywhere we go would be like a sci-fi fantasy dream device or something, lol.

Really though, my Touch Pro 2 is still a near perfect device to me even by today's standards. A few minor things could be better, but I really do love this device.

Just think where we'll be in another 5 years...

Re: what is the most convenient thing you do with your pda?

I think where ever we are in the world, having a phone like the Touch Pro 2 really brings a lot of convenience to everyday living!

For me, it's texting, checking my emails where ever I am. When there's downtime at work, i can watch my favorite michael jordan clips, or new music videos. Using the GPS to find routes to get to particular places. Access to the web to find information when youre out and about out of the house or work. Naturally making calls as well! :D
