anti-virus for tp2 (& status bar on phone)

Hi everyone,

sorry but this is a 2 question post...if this has been posted on this forum before..i apologize for double posting...maybe the mods can transfer it to the correct thread...but...

1. What anti-virus (if any) do you use on your htc tp2? what can you say about it? trying to get a consensus of what everyone uses.

2. is there any way to put the status bar of the tp2 at the bottom of the screen, as opposed to the top? i found that during phone calls (sometimes), somehow my ear presses on the start button and it starts to launch programs that are on my start menu. at least that's the only explanation i can think of when i have to start closing out apps that are open after ending a call.

What say you ppcgeekers?!?!

(just an extra FYI....running stock rom on my phone still if that matters regarding answers to my questions.)

I have played around with AV programs for the mobile world in the past, but honestly haven't found a real world need to ever implement them full time on my phone.

I use SMobile Security Shield (anti-virus and fw) Link. They just released a new version that was compatible w/ 6.5. This also has additional capabilities like find/lock/wipe phone (don't know if it works, but extra options aren't bad).

BTW, this was free from my work so like other posters I don't know if I would ever personally buy or need one.

you dont need anti virus..... hard reset would fix anything if ya actually got one.... I used airscanner a while back but realized ya dont need it with phones... im sure there out there but not very likely.......

Yes and no. Yes a hard reset will fix the infected phone, but no it would not fix anything...if you synced the infected file to your PC...and for some bizarre reason you had no AV on the PC...you've just potentially infected your PC. Same goes for e-mail.

We have to use Trend Micro PocketPC with our company phones. It does not seem to degrade performance much, if at all. I've forgotten to reinstall it occassionally after a flash and not really noticed any difference.

im aware that the sensor turns the screen off when you have the phone against your ear. any idea then why some programs open up by their own? it always opens the owner info screen, calendar and programs folder. it doesnt do it often...i'd say at least once every few days. and like i said in my original post, it somehow happens when im talking on the phone because when i close the phone screen, that's when all these screens are open all at the same time.

did anyone here ever actually got a virus on their device? never heard of that yet. If the virus ever does migrate to pc via sync (that would be one hell of a virus- since i(or anyone i know) never sync files and i doubt it can mask as a contact/app/msg(no att) or call log) the pc av will get it and hard reset or new rom flash will effectively desinfect your phone.

i stand by my statement, dont worry about a virus on a phone and if there was a hard reset would fix it.. if not that a flash would...... but Ive never heard of a person with a infected phone.......

But it always good to scan just to be on the safe side. With the new mobile viruses that are coming out, first hit the iPhone and on wmpoweruser.com they had mentioned a virus that causing charges to your phone by-way of premium text messages. In any case, I'm using ESET Anti-virus Mobile for PDA's: http://www.eset.com/products/mobileantivirus.php
Check it out, its pretty good, I've been using it for a while!

i've had the issue with the screen turning on during a phone call, turning off the auto adjusting light sensor seems to work for me. just set it to a brightness value and leave it at that. as for relocating the start menu, the only way i know of getting a start menu at the bottom is by running a 6.5.x rom. not a 6.5 or 6.1 because those are still located at the top left....

Ditto that last remark. From what I understand, 6.5.3 is the first iteration with a bottom Start Menu (which I kinda like).

As for AV, it's still pretty rare to find PPC viruses out in the wild and I'm not sure any potential performance degradation right now is worth installing AV, especially in the space-hobbled TP2s. That said, were you to pick up some sort of malware on your phone, having AV on your phone or computer (should you sync) is no guarantee you'll be safe, as most security software will have a hole here or there. Of course AV isn't a bad thing, but following best practicies is also key.

Re: Trend Micro - ah, I remember the days when that was a top-notch AV. How the mighty have fallen. :(

Now you're talking about a PC, not a phone. So yes, a hard reset will fix anything wrong with your phone, which is what this discussion is about

We are a very trusting bunch. Every time I flash a new rom I think to myself, "I don't know anything about the chefs here, they could probably just slip a keylogger in there and we would never know." If you are really worried about security you should only use a factory rom, never unlock your phone, and never install any software from unknown sources.

One of my top reasons for not flashing custom ROMs, as sexy as some of them might be. No offense to the chefs out there. :thumbright:

Hi Mojary,

I've gotten the screen to turn back on during a call, with a standard provider ROM, if I dial a number and then immediately put the phone up to my ear. There is a short vibration on the device when the phone connects to make the call, and you have to wait until after that short buzz to put the phone up to your ear if you want the proximity sensor to work properly.

As far as I can tell, what happens when the sensor "malfunctions" is: 1) You hit "Call" and then immediately put the phone to your ear, 2) The sensor turns off the screen, 3) The phone connects to the network and you get the short buzz as it updates your call screen, which also turns the screen back on, 4) Random button presses can then occur because the sensor does not turn the screen back off. I've never had a problem with the sensor working improperly if I wait till after feeling the device buzz (indicating that it's contacted the network) before placing it up to my ear.

Hope that helps.

+1 on the ESET recommendation if you're looking for an AV program.

I use their PC product and it has a very small footprint.

I don't use AV in my phone as I've never heard of a PPC virus.

I don't quite buy the "we don't need it because a hard reset will fix it anyway" arguement however. Sure, it would fix it, but formatting your LT hard drive & doing a clean install of Windows will eliminate a virus also but we still run v-scan on our LT's............

As smartphones get more & more powerful (i.e., more akin to mini-computers [they kinda are already]), there will most certainly come a day when I live & die by AV software running on mine.

I can understand that we all want out phones to be snappy as possible, and the idea of AV SW hogging our CPU Cycles stinks, but the writing is certainly on the wall. I suppose the extent to which we input or render available "sensitive" information (e.g., online banking, Japanese Robot Porn, etc.) will impact individual need or desire to so employ these AV Progies.

I've been thinking about AV SW a lot lately, and this thread woke this issue up again for me.

Anyhow, thanks to everyone for posting their opinions. Now, it's time to find that Optimus Prime video with that female Decepticon... FTW!

you guys kill me with your "i havent seen a million dollars so it doesnt exist" mentality...how often do you guys read post here? because not only did i read of the tp2 getting a virus, but i was one of the guys that did, and i got it off of a freeware site...it was a free game, a shooter, but i forgot the name, but i will repost and put it up...it made my phone call various long distant places...i did hard reset but my phone is off...i hhave 6.5 official rom, no cooks, just apps and phone...the screen still locks dark, slow starting, even my clean ram gets stuck...its ravaged....so start searching for that special av...besides...in a world that is quickly making good use of phones in a pc-esk manor, why wouldnt they make viruses? how many times would i rather jump on my phone than my laptop

I don't think anyone needs a Anti-virus if they just download stuff that's been approved by the community, just read the posts and if anyone says that the program is fishy then reset your phone and get rid of it.. no need for an anti-virus

Re: anti-virus for tp2 & status bar on phone

you need av on your phones... to think that it will never happen to you is kind of foolish. Yes, there is some kind of trojan floating around that you get if you install that anti-terorist 3d game. thats just one that we know of. Just because you never heard of one doesn't mean that they don't exist. you can get infected from a legitimate site through illigitimate ads on top of installing a rogue app on accident.

Just look at the nature of this website... all kinds of apps are being passed around by word-of-mouth... no verification at all - just "trust"... kind of foolish really.

prevention is better than a hard reset, because by the time you hardreset someon may have already gotten into your bank account... mobile banking is a huge malware opportunity.

PC Tools has a beta of a mobile av called Gaurdian. I'm running it... but like all other AV apps... can't really tell if its working unless i try to get myself infected... so...

Anyway, we're all too naive to think that we're all safe simply because we "never heard of a ppc virus before"...

But that cant be trusted the 3d anti terrorist game was approved by the community, no one said anything about the game being "Fishy", and theres always going to be a need for AV, ppc's are Pockets PC's as we are aware of so anybody can write a virus for them when ever they feel like. and as time moves on the ppc's have gotten way more popular then before i mean compare how many people had ppc in the early 00's and now. so now that its gaining popularity im sure people are going to start writing viruses for ppc's like they have with the iphone virus and the 3D Anti Terrorist Virus.

I've been running flexilis -- now called Lookout --- for months, starting with my Diamond, and I don't see any irregular drain on the battery. I get 2 days out of a full charge. It also does automatic backup, not just anti-virus.

so how does a ppc av work exactly? does it work the same way as a desktop ppc where you have to update virus definition files? and is it a yearly subscription as well?

I haven't noticed any real battery difference. I left my phone for 3 days at home, no interaction except that I had push gmail on, weather updating every hours, came home to 20% battery. Of course I had flexilis running...er lookout...
