Who wants a BARE WM6.1 ROM? Maybe WM6.5
By bare, I mean the ROM comes in at about 67 MB, it's so bare that absolutely nothing is loaded but the bare WM6.1 OS, Menu enhancement, and that's it. HTC Services such as PushInternet, as well as other services related to Manila/TF3D are also installed just incase you want to install Manila later on.
Stats: Free Memory: ~360 MB Used RAM: ~20/25% Every program is in CAB form (yes, even Manila 2.1/SenseUI) and could easily be downloaded from either the thread itself or placeholder site. Think of it as a sort of kitchen but already built so that people who are unfamiliar with kitchens won't have to bother building a ROM, as it'll already be built. PROS: -Stay up to date on programs because every program, including Manila and PhoneCanvas will be fully uninstallable, so that you may try different flavors of anything without worrying how to overwrite ROM files. -Bare OS, this means the ROM won't be updated every other day with new features. ONLY major bugs and new registry tweaks will make the ROM get updated. However, registry tweaks will be installable without the need for a reflash. -Fast install, the bare ROM will take 3 minutes or less to install and be at the today screen, which is absolutely blank. -No more trying to figure out how to build ROMs. -Major bugs with any program can easily be fixed by either uninstalling it and installing a newer version, or just apply the fix yourself, instead of having to worry about saving and restoring your data and reflashing your phone. CONS: -Since nothing is included, you will have to install programs separately and this could be a BIT time consuming (5-10 minutes) depending on what you want. -Creating backups will generally be much bigger because you're essentially backing up all the installed programs. -Any compression tweaks or tweaks in general other chefs do to programs probably won't be included in the CAB installs (This does not include tweaks tot he OS, those will be included). Still trying to figure out if I want to go that route. It will take a lot longer for me to make CABs of programs if I am including tweaks. However, I may add tweaks as reg files (or separate CAB for ease of install) in the ROM thread. So what do you guys think? Posibility to include WM6.5: YES (Updates may come out a bit more frequently considering WM6.5 is still being updated. But not as often. They will most likely be milestone updates. For example, every new build won't get an update.) Posibility to include WM6.5.x: No |
Re: Who wants a BARE WM6.1 ROM?
Why 6.1? I like the idea of bare bones, but why stick with the old OS when 6.5 is out and works just as well?

I'd be interested in this also, both versions. Reflashing is a long process for me, just reinstalling apps.. where'd I save that SN again? lol

Re: Who wants a BARE WM6.1 ROM? Maybe WM6.5
I have a bare bones 6.5.5 ROM if you want to try that out.
Plain 6.5 development has almost stopped but there are still some updates. 6.5.x is the one that is being updated almost daily. The stable release versions of 6.5 are definitely better than 6.1 in all aspects IMO. Good luck though. |
Re: Who wants a BARE WM6.1 ROM? Maybe WM6.5
I'm interested for sure. I'd like either in bare bones form.

Re: Who wants a BARE WM6.1 ROM? Maybe WM6.5
This is the kind of ROM I am dreaming about (and am trying to build)! However, I would push for at least one 6.5.x version - I find the touch-friendliness of the 6.5.x builds very enticing over the 6.1 builds. Maybe one idea is to keep the barebones ROM as a common kitchen, and then all someone would need to keep it updated would the the XIP and SYS files from the later 6.5.x builds.

i would be interested in 6.5 one as well.

*interest*
prefer 6.5 but would check out any that came into production |

Id be interested in 6.1 and possible 6.5.. like the idea of isntalling my choice of manilla/sense
|
Re: Who wants a BARE WM6.1 ROM? Maybe WM6.5
The SenseUI 2.1 cab weighs in at 44 MB and takes like 7 minutes to install lol, but it is fully functional and fully uninstallable...
I'm trying to make as many things installable as possible. The downside to that is it's pretty annoying having to install so many things, but the upside is that ROM flashes will be rare if you can just uninstall and install new updates as they come out. For instance, HTC Messaging, which everyone hates due to MMS problems. :) As long as you are comfortable with sticking to a specific WM6.1/6.5 build for quite a while, then you will be good to go. |
Re: Who wants a BARE WM6.1 ROM? Maybe WM6.5
erice already made one if im not mistaken
|
Re: Who wants a BARE WM6.1 ROM? Maybe WM6.5
sweet jesus this is what i have wanted. i was gonna revert back to stock rom 6.1. i have cooked many 6.5 roms but i am not a pro at this and do not know exactly what can be removed. i am stuck at booting around 50% mem. i had gotten 6.1 down to mid 20's.
so YES, i would love a bare bones rom! i'd jump on a 6.1, but personally i prefer 6.5 however the only reason i like 6.5 is due to the menus actually being somewhat more finger friendly and at the least easier on the eyes. so if the 6.5 rom will come with the basic menu features (preferably the scroll bar and menu selection pop-up enhancements over 6.1) then by all means i'd prefer a 6.5 bare bones rom thanks in advance. and i'd be more than willing to test... |
Re: Who wants a BARE WM6.1 ROM? Maybe WM6.5
I'm interested. I have been looking for one but not seeing yet.

From what I've seen, 6.5, when properly configured, can be faster than 6.1 due to better memory handling. 6.5.3 runs even faster at times, but it hiccups more due to it still being in development. |
Re: Who wants a BARE WM6.1 ROM? Maybe WM6.5
Well, i've removed practically every single third party (HTC) app including the services and everything else related to HTC.
Booting up, it's as if you just formatted a Dell computer with a retail copy of Windows. Now it's time to find out how many of them need to be cooked in vs can be installed via cabs. ROM size is 54 MB. Total Memory: 376.09 MB In Use: 7.16 MB Free Memory: 368.92 Total RAM: 199.30 MB In Use: 45.54 MB Free: 153.76 |
Re: Who wants a BARE WM6.1 ROM? Maybe WM6.5
so will we just run a carrier provisioning cab to set it up

It'll be something categorized like: -Important (The most basic of apps would go in here although i've decided not to mess with that stuff, too many variables for error, and the average joe won't care about stuff like Clear Storage, DataRoamGuard, etc. but it did boot up fine with all of them gone.) -Functionality (stuff like the htc album, youtube, etc) -Cosmetic (manila, menu, volume, and notification enhancements, etc) |

Hey freeza. Kudos to your work. Question. I'm trying to do the same thing using 6.1 (my own learning) but I cannot adjust the timeout settings for power/backlight. I don't think I removed anything necessary besides manila. Can you offer any input. I get the Power icon but when I click into it, the boxes to adjust those settings are missing.

However, all the big name programs have been removed and cabbed up for your installing pleasure. I've been literally over every single folder in this kitchen trying to learn the ins and outs of how this process all works and I wanna say that I am quite close to a possible beta at least! :-D |

Re: Who wants a BARE WM6.1 ROM? Maybe WM6.5
OK guys, i'm working on an enhanced Caller State ID recognition. Instead of having it display just the state, i'm either going to try and get the main city (which might be impossible or inaccurate since area codes can be many cities) and state, or just region in state. For instance here in California 626 would be shown as "Southern California" instead of the default "California"
This will take forever because HTC has a million area codes in here. If I can find an up to date database I may be able to add some that may be missing, if any. What do you guys think? |

i had a dumb phone that had this feature but you had to pay for it, so this would be nice to have and take advantage of our data connection. btw i used a trial that came with that dumb phone and it was pretty bad at pinning down the city, it was wrong about 75% of the time, so a more general label would be better, but something with better resolution than just the state |

"Ventura County, CA" I like this idea. Although it will take a lot of work and effort. |

even a program that could allow the user to tag area codes to counties/states would be nice. i know it kinda defeats the purpose of finding out what area code is calling you, but then you would not have enter them in all yourself. just leave it up to the user to decide which codes to tag. and if that route were taken, then say ever user had a txt file that was updated when they tagged a new code. that file could then be updated on a forum and allow people to download it. this way every user acts as a supplier to generate a substantial list. you could even have a txt file per state.... i don't know, just ideas. i don't know much about programming so, don't even know if what i said was even possible... |
