pdanet error 31

i downloaded and installed pdanet 1.8 and everything worked great, the first time i plugged my phone in then i started getting an error dialup failed error 31 (state=5) i did a hard reset(and forgot to back up my contacts) i know im a dummy. well the questins i have is how do i get pdanet back up and whats a good backup utility for my contacts?
