Smartphone newie with ?s

I am acquiring an Alltel HTC Mogul 6800. Never had smartphone before.

I would like to know what is essential when it arrives as far as what I should do, download, install, etc to make it run at it's optimum.

I believe it's coming with 6.1, and is stated as upgradable to Rev. A

For the time being, I am going to be / wanting to access the Internet via the WiFi connected to routers and hotspots, because I do not want to pay Alltel for the SmartChoice plan. So information to optimize this option of Internet browsing would be apprecaited. What are the restrictions of NOT having the SmartChoice plan?

Is GPS automatic with this unit, or do I need to do something special? How do I go about enabling this app?
