Memory?

Just like to throw this out there. Is it possible at all to add more memory (ram) to the mogul? I remember reading about the 6700 being able to do this.

Did anyone found out if there will be a new ROM update for 6800 that will fix the RAM memory leak? agghh!!! I need my RAM back. This is really disappointing I dont want to keep on soft resetting my phone everytime RAM would go down to 7mb and then when I try to use the same app I have been using the whole day the app still eats up off of the 7mb.

i have wondered this myself. I've seen the RAM chips taken off an xbox motherboard and successfully replaced with twice the memory. I guess it all depends on whether the device can recognize/support the new RAM.

I remember reading that power usage was part of HTC's decision to put 64mb in the mogul. If we can solder more RAM, ill live with the decrease in battery life.

There is a company that does RAM upgrades like this. I read a posting either here or over at pdaphonehome where a user contacted that company and they are looking into it.

There are a few problems with doing this if it works correctly.

1. Your warranty is gone at that point
2. It will use more of your battery (might not be that bad)
3. Cost

I wish I could remember the post or the company, but I'm sure someone here read it and will post a link.

I install and save virtually everything to the storage card. Everything works great, and I've never had a low memory error

RAM and storage are two completely different things.

yeah on second thought #3 cost isnt worth it

personally i dont have memory problems. im not convinced this is an 'issue'. i think wm6 takes up more than weve seen in the past but the device can still be used as designed. htc decided on 64mb on purpose. and winCE was developed on 32mb devices. i expect memory management to improve when we see a newer build of wm6. ive noticed that some of the xda guys (maybe just gsm users?) are running 179xx. i beleive we have 17743, id have to look.

Well...... I agree. It might be not worthgetting more ram if the price is over 100 not including ram price. Then the Phone gets too ridiculous expensive. But let me share this...... about the ram leak. I did the rom update and i noticed it cured the leak. I use Xbutton software, that helps alot.. you just got to keep programs from staying in the memory by killing it with xbotton. But i still got curious and this is what i found out.

Out the Box my PPC6700 has this amount of storage and ram onboard.Im going to compare it to what my Mogul came out the box. Both devices have been Hard reseted and the extended rom skipped.

PPC6700
Storage Programs
Total: 43.50MB Total: 49.20
In Use: 2.58MB In Use: 14.34
Free: 40.92MB Free: 34.86

Mogul
Storage Programs
Total: 162.67 Total: 47.46
In Use: 5.39 In Use: 21.27
Free: 157.28 Free: 26.19

Now...... if you look at these numbers youll notice the mogul has about 2MB less out the box. That I cant explain. Because both the mogul and 6700 do come with 64mb. I do know that theres background code that makes the phone run enbeded inside the RAM. That explains why we never see 64MB.
I can only see the WM6 OS being the Culprit in why we have less ram. So most likely we will never get past 26 megs of free use. Too bad. 26 IMO is too little. But at least the memory leak has somewhat been cures with the latest rom update. Well.. at least for me.

The memory we are concerned with is the free Program Memory as that's the RAM. On the newest Mogul ROM, the OS eats up 16.54MB of the RAM out of the box. This leaves us at 47.46mb which other services, apps, cache, pagepool, etc have to use. Apparently the default uses about 20MB leaving us with about 25mb after a hard reset.

Either through HTC or a custom ROM, I believe more available program memory (RAM) could be left available. Case in point, the Palm Treo. It has 64mb just like the Mogul, but has more available after a hard reset.

EDIT: I took this info from several sources on the Internet regarding memory usage on a Treo 750. Looks like its not just a HTC thing as Palm can't even get WM6 to give up much free RAM (28.04MB).

Treo 750 w/leaked WM6 ROM
TOTAL..... 48.67 MB
IN USE..... 20.63 MB
FREE.....28.04 MB
OS Program Memory: 15.33 MB

Treo 750 w/WM5
TOTAL..... 49.27 MB
IN USE..... 17.48 MB
FREE..... 31.79 MB
OS Program Memory: 14.73 MB

The latest version of the 6800 ROM uses 16.54MB RAM for the OS which is pretty close to the 750 w/WM6. If we can build a custom ROM up to Palm's standards, the best we can expect is 3 or 4MB more usable program memory/ram.

i think the reason you see more available on the 6800 than the 6700 (47 vs 49) is the difference in radio ROM.
