Battery problem
Have had Mogul for a few weeks - the first week, the batery seemed fine and would go days without a recharge but now it is only holding a charge for a day or so....am not running wifi, bluetooth or anything and very few calls - anyone else having this problem? I did buy a car charger and backup ac charger on web for cheap - info on the charging rates on ac charger are same as factory one, but is it possible that they are not shutting off when finished charging and overloading battery? Or will the phone in effect shut off the charge from coming thru if battery is fully charged?
|
The phone stops charging when it reaches 100%, and I don't think it charges again until you unplug and plug it back in. I'm not sure on that, though. I noticed the first couple days I had my phone, I had excellent battery life, but then again, I had it plugged into the computers at home and work a lot, downloading apps and stuff, so it was charging. Were you plugged into the computer a lot the first week?
|
No - not plugged in much
Was mostly using bluetooth to sync first few days....have let the battery drain to 0 and recharged but still have problem...
|
Not sure what it is then, unless you use it heavily, like I do. I'm on my Mogul pretty much all day, and my battery is pretty drained by the end of the day if I'm not hooked up to the computer at work.
|
very little use
No, I do not use it that much, that is why I am surprised at the life.....
|
What programs have you installed on your Mogul? Are you using a push client?
Usually the culprit for battery drains are BT or programs that access the internet on their own or scheduled intervals. |
No Bt or Push
The only programs I have are SKtools, Spb pocket Plus, Slingplayer mobile, Mobile link satelite radio, google maps, macromedia flash, splash id
|
All I can say then is ensure that slingplayer and Mobile link radio are not running constanty, settings, system, memory. If they aren't then I would look into getting the battery replaced.
|
I have the same problem. I had a PPC6700 and if I turned off the wireless settings, it would use almost no battery after I turned off the device. Seriously, I could go a couple days and the percent power left would be virtually identical to what it was when I first turned it off.
That is not the case with the Mogul. It uses a ton of battery while off. I charged it to full power last night and did not use it at all for 24 hours (sat it on my desk) and now the battery is down to 60%! Something definitely seems wrong but I can't figure out what. All I have installed that is "OS" oriented is the main Touch file for the Today screen, the Touch Media Player, and the beta of Wisbar Advance 3. I'm using the Comm Manager to turn off wireless by putting it in flight mode - which is pretty much was I used to do with my PPC6700. I also have my system's power settings to be thrifty when on battery (lower backlighting and 30 seconds to turn off - not that either should matter when I leave it untouched for 24 hours). Any ideas? |
Bad battery?
I emailed Sprint and they said to bring it in to a store and have them check it out....maybe a bad battery?
|
Some new ideas
I noticed that even though I had not run Activesync, it was showing up in my running programs list at times for no reason...is there something that would turn it on automatically? Also, I had enabled rror reporting, so I disabled that....maybe that caused some usage? Any thoughts?
|
I have the same issue. My phone's battery will last only about 5 or 6 hours. All I have on is push email and EVDO. If I don't charge it in the early afternoon the battery will die out completely. This can't be normal, right?
|
yea i hate the battery in the mogul, my 6700 battery life is much better
|
Im having the same problem with mine and its 5 days old. I have nothing but activesync running, which i need to have to check my email. Surely that cant be reason enough for the battery to last less than a day. I'm not even making more than 1 or 2 short calls on it, and reading a few emails. I love this phone but if this is normal behavior I can't live with it.
|
Im feeling yall's pain. Ive had it for about a week now and the battery life is horrible. I keep my Mogul charged at work which lasts untill 5. I use it for music for about 2 hours afterwards while I workout then 20 min. for music in my car. By that time, the battery is already down to 50% which I find greatly unacceptable.
When I first got the phone, I let it fully charge for 8 hours before ever using it. I thought that would condition it properly but obviously it didn't help. |
do you guys think this is something I could get taken care of in the store? Im sure I have a bad battery. Just to test I have the phone charged 100% and am going to bed. the screen is off, only activesync is running. we'll see what its at after 7 hours of idle with the screen off the entire time.
|
My battery life is pretty bad too. It's actually just as bad as my Sidekick was, which is weird, because it shouldn't be.
|
My battery life has been terrible. Today the battery died at 2:30 PM.
I took it off the charger at 6:00 AM this morning when i woke up. |

I run activesync against my Exchange 2007 server all day and still have about 60% at the end of the day. It's not great, but its not that bad either. If I am in a lower signal area, that number does drop since battery drainage is greater when the signal is low.
One thing to make sure is that if you are running your own exchange server, make sure your port 443 (SSL) isn't set to timeout too quickly. If it does, your battery will drain faster and your push mail can be delayed. |
Went to Sprint store
Went to Sprint store today and told them about the problems with holding a charge. The stats call for battery to have up to 200 minutes talk time and up to 9.5 days standby time - I am getting maybe 30 hours standby . They checked my battery and said it is taking a charge (duh) and that when a new battery is available, that they would order me one. Who knows when that will be..... There is an extended life battery at
www.wirelessground.com/utspmovewixv.html - don't know if it makes sense to buy one just yet until this issue is resolved..... |
I run activesync with exchange server + IM+ non stop (constant data transfer) in an area with poor signal all day and repeatedly turn the device on to chat and it still lasts for 10 hours or so...
|
with my phone sitting untouched for 8 hours with the screen off I lost 40% of the battery. Thats not gonna get me 9.5 days of standby
|
I had the phone charging all night (and my alarms didn't go off, but that's another can of worms). I unplugged it at 9:00AM. Battery was at 10% by 4:00PM. I only made two short phone calls during that time.
|
My battery was really good when I first got the phone. It would last 10 hours in an area where it would alternate between no signal and one bar - checking IMAP mail every 10 minutes.
Now, I have perfect signal all day, checking mail every 10 minutes and the battery is about dead by the end of the day. That is with no phone calls and plugging it in a couple times during the day. |
Same problem with battery. I make sure all programs are closed and not running in the background and still battery runs out very quickly.

Response from HTC
This is the response from HTC to my email regarding the poor battery life:
"Thank you for your inquiry regarding battery life of your device. We understand how important is a good battery life in a device and thank you for bringing this to our attention. Sprint has their Technical Support team for their customers. I would recommend you to contact them for support related to this issue and they will escalate it to the concerned department for further investigation. All the models launched are the result of meticulous research and goes through a rigorous testing. There is no such known issue with this device and nor with any similar models sold by the different carriers in US and Europe. Testing the device with another battery is the only way to determine if the battery or the device itself is causing this issue. There are other factors also which can effect the battery standby time, like if the signal strength is weak around your area the device will consume more battery. Use the original wall charger to charge the device for at least and not more than for four hours. Also follow Battery Saving Tips to conserve battery. Battery Saving Tips How long your battery power lasts depends on battery type and how you use your device. Here are a few tips on saving battery power: When the device is not in use, press the Power Key to switch off the display. Tap the battery icon ( ) on the Today screen. On the Advanced tab of the Power settings screen, you can specify when your device automatically turns off the display to conserve battery power. For optimum conservation, specify three minutes or less. Use the AC phone charger to plug your device into external power whenever possible, especially when using a storage card or when using a modem or other peripherals. Adjust the backlight settings. For more information, see “To set the backlight to dim after a time delay†in Section 4. When you are out of range of wireless networks, turn Wi-Fi off. Searching for networks consumes a lot of power. For more information, see “Wi-Fi†in Section 11. Turn Bluetooth off when you are not using it. For more information, see “Using Bluetooth†in Section 11. Lower the volume. Close battery-intensive programs, such as the Camera, when you are done using them. Make sure the programs are ended and are not continuously running in the background. For more information about ending running programs, see “To close a program†in this Section." I suggest that anyone out there who has this issue, take the time to email HTC and Sprint - maybe they'll make an effort to resolve if more people speak up - I really like the phone and don't want to give it up unless they can't resolve this issue....... |
I have had my phone for a month and find the battery comfortably lasts through the day; however, I have done the following to maximize battery life:
1. Turn off Receive all IR beams 2. Turn off Bluetooth when not in use. (On ~3hrs a day) 3. Use a Black skin with white lettering that permits me to run the brightness at 50% on battery. 4. Poll email instead of push. 5. Set Activesync to run manually so it only runs when connected to USB. The result is better life than I had on my 6700. :) |
The more issues I'm hearing about this device, the more I'm glad I stuck with my 6700 in the end.
After tweaking my AKU to 3.5, installing 1.41 radio, turning down the brightness on the screen, and shutting off IR beams, my battery will last me two days with heavy EVDO browsing and a few phone calls. |
My phone was great for the first week or two. I used to be able to go 2 or 3 days with out charging the phone now I cant go a day with out charging it. I have tested this with all my programs installed and with a hard reset with nothing installed. My roommate has experenced the same issues.
|
I find the battery life on my Mogul is much improved over the 6700. It is my opinion that if you are having battery issues it is most likely a bad battery or a lack of familiarity with WM devices. These little computers use a lot of power to do some things and if not used properly can kill the battery. I get about 3/4 of a day out of my Mogul battery but I am a heavy user, I would go through 3 battery's every day on my 6700 even after tweaking all the battery saving functions. So after 3/4 of a day I plug my Mogul in and in 4 hrs its filly charged or in one hour I am at like 1/2 charge. I noticed that from 1/2 to 0 takes a lot longer than on my 6700. To those having battery problems do you ever let the battery get to the battery warning before recharging? On my Mogul it seams like the last half of the battery lasts longer than the first half.
|
I don't see any issues with my battery life either. Obviously, this device is going to use some battery power. It's a small computer... what do you expect? There are ways to conserve your battery life and I would recommend you try them. I've set my IR Beam to off and keep my screen brightness on 75% brightness when running on battery and my 6800 holds it's charge all day with moderate to heavy use. I've never had it fall below 40% charge by the end of the day. I leave it on the charger all night while I sleep, and when I wake up, I pull it off the charger and start over again.

My email response to HTC
I sent this to HTC:
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. A couple of things though: 1. I was told at the Sprint store that they have no available batteries to offer at this time for replacement. So....... 2. It troubles me that you note "use the original wall charger to charge the device for at least and not more than for four hours." Why four hours? Does the charger not shut off or trickle charge once the battery is fully charged? Who is going to watch the charger for that amount of time and make sure that only 4 hours have gone by? If more than 4 hours, what then? Every other phone I have had, did not have a requirement of removing from a charger once it was fully charged....... 3. I have a 2-3 bar signal at my home - the ONLY thing on is my phone - NOTHING ELSE IS ON - the phone will only stay charged for about 1 1/2 - 2 days. This does not fit the stats that HTC publishes for the phone (up to 200 minutes talk time and up to 9.5 days standby time). Something is not correct here and I would like some answers since I have invested my time and money in your company's product. What can be done? |
just like the 6700, you're gonna have to buy the extended battery...
or a spare standard battery. |
My Mogul is 2 days old. I have a very weak signal at work. My battery is dying really fast. It went from 100% to 80 in less then 2 hours. I disabled BT, Wi-Fi, roaming and lowered brightness to about 50%, adjusted battery settings. I also disabled direct push. Yesterday it went from 100% to 30 in 8 hours with very light use. I think it is dying that fast because the signal where I work is very weak and the phone constantly looking for a signal. Is there a way to disable this?
This is my first PDA. My Sanyo M1 was holding battery pretty well for those 8 hours at work. |
My battery is also having issues.
I disabled my location service (e911 only), which is something I haven't seen people suggesting, but it should help SOMETHING. To everyone saying disable bluetooth, etc... That's bunk because I'm coming from using 2 GSM Windows Mobile devices, and I never had to disable BT to make my battery last through the day before! I know that CDMA uses slightly more power than GSM does, but there is something more going on here. Its not something as simlpe as disabling BT, IR, etc... (my older WM devices had those on 24/7 and I was still able to get a couple of days out of a charge with them). I did notice that with my phone sitting on my desk, it will randomly power up itself! I'm not sure if this has something to do with the weak signal going in and out of roaming, but whatever it is, its definitely NOT helping the situation! Has anyone else noticed this happen? Try leaving your phone out where you can see it, and see if the backlight turns on all of the sudden randomly. |
You are not supposed to drain a Li-ion battery to 0, that would actaully damage the battery

I come from owning a long line of Palm Treos and without exception they have all been able to sustain at least a full day's worth of moderate use, including 30-60 minutes of call time, constant push email, light web browsing, casual RSS and ebook reading, and still get home at the end of the day with a comfortable 40%. I never had to turn bluetooth off, ever. My Mogul is like a baby. I have to turn bluetooth off and have the screen at one of the dimmest levels. Having push email and no call time whatsoever gives me 7 hours' battery if I'm lucky. If I make any phone calls that rapidly drops to 6 hours or less. Do anything else - read RSS feeds, light browsing for a couple of minutes - and I'm looking at 5 hours to a dead battery. I've had it last as little as 4 hours. Asking the user of a phone to switch it to flight mode so it will last a day is just not reasonable. This has nothing to do with knowing how to use a device. It's just poor performance and very low standards, period. |
