Htc Titan stuck in bootloader

First of all, this phone was running an official rom, and had not been altered in any way from true factory condition. I had just gotten it, and in an attempt to determine which installed programs were bundled crapware, I decided to hard-reset the phone. I held in both soft buttons, and hit the stylus reset button. The prompt to press R to reset came up, so i pressed R. I waited for it to finish, and when it reset, it went straight into the bootloader. (Yes the actual bootloader with the colored bars).

I tried to restart the phone via the power button, via the reset button, by running the hard reset procedure again, by removing the battery, etc. No matter what, it kept re-entering the bootloader.

So I decided to try installing the latest official Alltel ROM. The RUU process went fine, and when finished the phone reboot, back into the bootloader. (The RUU did result in the bootloader getting upgraded, and I'm betting the rom installed fine, too).

I've run the Titan Exit Bootloader program found on these forums but it did not help. It caused the phone to restart, but it did not leave the bootloader.

Anybody know what is going on?

It sounds like you did everything right. Try to run the RUU again. Disable screen saver and power saver settings on the pc. Don't want these to happen when running the RUU.

I've already run the RUU several times. Each time is exactly like the first. (Except that the progress bar jumps straight to 11%, presumably because the bootloader upgrade is getting skipped these times).

I don't have a microSD handy, since my previous phone (Apache) used minisd. Sigh. If I had a microsd I would try the upgrade from sd card method.

Yeah that was going to be my next recommndation, flash using the microsd card. Check the Upgrades Forum for the procedure.

Yeah. Figured as such. You don't have any other suggestions on things to try that don't require an sd card do you?

I'm just shocked that something as simple as a hard reset could get a phone stuck in bootloader mode.

There was another thread recently where this happened. If I remember correctly, there were bad sectors in the memory and the phone couldn't be recovered. Hope this isn't what is happening here.

Is there any way to test for that?

Check this thread. Might help. http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...uck+bootloader

That post did not help. However, I decided to pull the battery and wait a really long time. The result is that it now fairly reliably leaves bootloader mode. One time it tried to refuse, but pulling the battery for only about three seconds let it boot.

For some reason it refuses to update via the new microsd card I just bought. (The bootloader shows for a bit, then a gray screen with a message appears for a fraction of a second, then the bootloader screen comes back. (Yes, the is under 2 GB, it is a 1 GB sandisk card).

I suppose my unit just has a personality defect. :)

I see no one asked the version of the bootloader. Hopefully I didn't miss it, but what version do you have?
