How do I back up the Phone DATA (TELUS P4000 WM5)

I want to customize my phone but I feel that I should back up the phones original state before hand.

Is there software for this or can I do it manually.

I have searched and have found some software for backing up data but I don't know if it is PPC specific!

Most forums have tutorials but I have yet to find any on this one!
