Yeah the E911 argument is pretty weak. And really stupid since it's a federal requirement.

Has anyone else heard a confirmed update will enable GPS?

I'm not leaving my 6700 until there is actually an upgrade availble. The 6800 isn't enough of a step up with out it. PLus there is a Mini sd adapter GPS adapter coming out soon anyways I'm willing to bet that the 6700 will have a GPS with that adapter before the 6800 is patched.

winter720 07-20-2007 01:33 PM

when I called into HTC about the BT issue, their engineer called me back, and I took the oppertunity to ask about the GPS. As I mentioned previously in another thread, he did state that the device had full GPS, and sprint had chosen to disable.

But if you have dropped $400 or $600 (I know, I'm talking full prices here) for a new PPC cell phone (Mogul, 6700, Q, or Treo...) with them, you can't even get Telenav with out spedning another $50 to $100 on a bluetooth GPS receiver. I don't get it. I spend more and get less? What's the deal Sprint? Just let us have our damn GPS. We paid for it.

I agree with this man.

jgctx 07-20-2007 04:45 PM

So do we know when the rev a update is coming....and will that ever fix the darn bluetooth?

aughsum 07-20-2007 11:30 PM

ill hold off on a bt receiver to see what happens with the rev a update...

im slowly coming around on the mogul.. there are times that i miss my apache but after gps and a working 3rd party rom with touchFLO integrated i'll be sold.

charbroil 07-22-2007 02:01 PM

Hi ..new to the forum. I just wanted to point out that Sprint has remove GPS as being a feature for the Mogul from the SERO site.

Hmmm...

Spydc 07-22-2007 05:08 PM

Yea, I just saw it. But they haven't removed it from other devices such as the Treo 700WX (and that phone does not have a dedicated gps either). So i assume Sprint received a lot of complaints from upset customers claiming that they were duped by the false advertisement.

Hoof 07-22-2007 07:17 PM

Maybe they're just removing it for now until they enable it with the Rev A upgrade later this fall.

*wishful thinking*

Could be. Though Sprint's definition of GPS Enabled usually means Telenav is available for the A-GPS. So they are probably just waiting until the fall when a compatible telenav app is out to put the GPS notice back FWIW.

I didn't read thru this whole thread so if this is repeated, sorry......but I thought this would be of interest here. It appears to be talking about aGPS but it might be step closer to unlocking the possibility of a standalone (if even possible on the Mogul):

PPC-6800 and GPS (Mogul GPS Support Coming)
http://www.evdoforums.com/thread6310.html

Quote:

For those playing with your new PPC-6800 Mogul, you may have discovered that GPS is NOT a feature of the PPC-6800.

However, have you heard about the firmware upgrade (available in a few months), that will add EVDO Rev A capability? There will be one other cool surprise with this firmware upgrade...

Internal GPS will be enabled.

That will allow GoogleMaps, GPS Directions and Sprint Locator Service to all work.

I cannot wait!
After I found this in a Google I also found a thread at the Buzz referencing the same thread above:

http://forums.buzzaboutwireless.com/...&thread.id=923

ttyRazor 07-23-2007 01:55 PM

Until an actual firmware update appears with this or Sprint makes an official announcement along the lines of their promised Rev. A support, I'm chalking up everything to just rumor and speculation.

Did you get the GPS working on your google maps, or just the program running so you can enter addresses in and find directions?

meburton 07-24-2007 11:04 AM

GPS works just fine for me on the Mogul (with a Bluetooth GPS receiver). The option to use GPS in Google Maps is built-in...

http://google.com/gmm/gps.html

fooo 07-24-2007 11:41 AM

I got this reply today from a Sprint Online customer service rep:

Also, I want to inform you that the phone is a GPS enabled handset. However, as of now we are in the process of activating the GPS capabilities with the Sprint services. As soon as we activate the services, you will be informed through a high profile promotion online.

Makes me hope.

I thought he was saying that Google Maps worked with GPS sans BT reciever, and using internal functionality. I am guessing I just took the statement too literally!

I got my google map to work with my new i.Trek M5+ that I got for $49....This is awesome. Plus it comes some Mapping software. What is the best mapping software out there for the PS and the Mogul?

How easy was it to get it all working? This might just be the way to go

FCC filing shows Mogul DOES HAVE GPS

The FCC application describes the Mogul as
"a CDMA850/CDMA1900 (1XEVDO / 1XRTT / IS-95A/B) Pocket PC Phone with wireless LAN, bluetooth, and GPS functions."

https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout =500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=391628&fcc_i d='NM8TITA100'

I got it as a weekly special from this site

http://www.semsons.com/im5blgpsre32.html

I ordered it on Tuesday and got it on Thursday. For some reason it is not on their weekly special list anymore. I guess I got lucky. :)

It was pretty easy, I just put in the battery, enabled BT on my Mogul, set hardware address to Com0 in the WM6 builtin software and went into google maps. It worked immediatly. Pretty cool, going to sync this up with my BT laptop...

Hoof 07-27-2007 03:12 PM

Im somewhat inpatient, I guess I could pick up an i.Trek M5+ now and if they ever do fix the damn gps I could always sell it.

Hoof 07-30-2007 03:22 AM

Type in ##DEBUG# on your Mogul keypad, screen shows all the parameters possible with the Mogul in relation to the GPS. I still don't think Sprint would miss out on profit from GPS enabled apps such as Telenav just like with the Sprint Music Store. I think a software update is definitely in the works.

Telenav uses cellular triangulation as a solution to the locating of the user. This is not the same way that true GPS uses.

You know how many people switched to Cingular JUST to get the HP 6515 with built in GPS, when it came out? A LOT!

Why doesn't sprint actualy 'sprint ahead' and get a PDA/PPC with true GPS capability? It's sales would go up significantly.

INSTEAD, they have a 500$ device that doesn't have a capability that the 'free' phones do... WTF is up with that?

If the mogul supported GPS out of the box, I'd go get one today, and so would about 20 or 30 people that I know, there's got to be hundreds of thousands of mobile professionals that would want such a device.

we know... the same can be said for the apache...

Which free phones support real GPS?

kamiraa 08-09-2007 01:54 AM

I got the molux 1000, amazing gps unit. I used it so much already going to do different locations. I highly recommend it for now. Just put it on the dash or something since its bluetooth the battery lasts about 13 hrs full use.

mrenz999 08-09-2007 04:11 PM

I boguht the itrek m5+ works great with Live. But sucks with google maps cuz it seems to stop following along. Live works great though.

Deviation 08-09-2007 10:12 PM

I know the new ROM has some libraries that relate to GPS, but they obviously aren't doing anything.

I have a good feeling that the GPS will get enabled by Sprint. In what capacity, who knows.

Murph24, you're the man, thanks for doing this for everyone!

Good grief.

So here's the deal folks: Shadowmite was wrong. Very wrong.

(This is what we get for putting too much faith in 1 person).

All we had to do was look at the FCC internal photos (warning: large PDF) of the Mogul/6800 as they show as clear as day the internal GPS antenna.

Going further, the HTC Touch on Sprint also lists an internal GPS antenna, which means this:
  1. Mogul and Touch both have an internal GPS antenna
  2. This antenna is required for aGPS/GPS
  3. Previous Sprint WM devices did *not* have these antennas (for whatever reason)
  4. Sprint/HTC need to "enable" this feature via firmware i.e. currently it is "locked down" either on purpose, lack of an API or both.
How did we all miss this? ](*,)

For what its worth.......

Here are links to some pics of that area on the board I took awhile back. If I remember right we were originally looking for a GPS antenna similar the Trinity's, so this component was just overlooked.

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...0/IMGP1967.jpg

Looks like the manufacturer and part number are (I THINK..pics aren't that great):
APT
50H20072-15M

Tried a quick google search, but nothing came up. Maybe someone with some better component data resources can take a look. This component is in pretty close proximity to the Qualcomm Chips....

Edit:

Page 11 of the FCC doc from Malatesta seems to show the antenna. It seems to have a slightly different part number from whats in my mogul...

Very interesting Murph. Lets keep digging :thumbleft:

There is the chance that it was omitted from the Sprint version or changed.

That was my impression too: people were looking in the wrong area for the antenna, so it was missed and once Shadow declared it was absent, that seemed to seal the deal.
