Not to nitpick, but if we're gonna talk facts, you don't need a separate antennae for aGPS.

Nitpicking is fine!

I'm curious if that is accurate or not. I was originally thinking you *don't* need the antenna that it was only needed for aGPS standalone mode (i.e. no assisted server).

So you're saying we don't need the antenna for the other modes (with server and tower triangulation)? I guess the questions are this:
  1. Do other Sprint phones have an internal antenna? (Probably not)
  2. Can other WM devices still do aGPS w/o the antenna, they are just firmware locked not to?
Thoughts?

Yes we have, if you see Malatesta's signature you'll see he writes for WMExperts and at the bottom of the article you linked to, there's a link to an article he wrote ;)

Is it possible that the pics we are looking for were submitted to the fcc way before they created the sprint version and that the pics shown there may include things that were subsequently removed/changed in newer versions of the hardware? I'm really interested in seeing how this turns out 'cause I'd definitely love that feature enabled in my phone. Ah well guess we may have to wait 'till that "Q1 2008" firmware release to begin understanding the way mogul's gps works.

I took pictures of my sprint Mogul's internals when I first got it and it appears that it does have a similar looking antenna with a similar part number to that shown in the FCC documents. See my previous post. The pics aren't that great, but I'm pretty sure its in there.

I guess we'll find out when the new ROM gets here or someone figures out a radio ROM hack........

well I was going to buy GPS receiver but I guess I will wait and see where this goes....

I got through about 3 pages of this forum. When you look at the hardware you will likely only see one antenna, maybe two. Either way is fine. I always have chuckle at the people who go "Theres only one antenna so dont get your hopes up" but a simple review of the hardware specs on the chipset shows that it only NEEDS one antenna. They use a triplexer to utilize three different signals on the antenna. PCS, Phone, GPS. Maybe Ill be proven wrong in the long run, who knows, but I see no reason why GPS wont work.

Yeah it's possible but as others have mentioned, from the photos they took of their phone's internals it looks to still be there (though slightly different).

All of this is speculation, tied together with existing information so it's all up in the air.

I'm very curious to see how Sprint rolls this out when it happens. I mean it looks like it can do standalone GPS, just like the Kaiser (a gpsOne device w/internal antenna--same setup), meaning we should be able to run any 3rd party software (TomTom, Live Search, etc.). Will that be the case though? Or will Sprint limit access to the function, forcing us to use TeleNav, etc?

Anything is possible.

Considering it now looks like Sprint and HTC have been basically selling a device that can do standalone GPS for months now (and add the Touch to that as well), but have had it crippled in the firmware is quite disconcerting. The argument before was "Sprint doesn't have the API's to enable aGPS on their network" (which was still lame seeing as it's been 2 years since WM5 launched). But the Kaiser is 100% independent of the cell network it's on, so if it can do standalone without network integration, why could they not ship the Mogul or Touch as the same?

I have no idea--maybe it's technical, maybe it's carrier choice. I wish we could get some straight answers though :-) Either way, it doesn't make me thrilled with Sprint or HTC. And the latest info on the 800w has Palm wanting "full GPS" (whatever that means) but Sprint only wanting "aGPS" (once again, whatever that means)--so Sprint seems to be the limiting factor here, but who really knows.

Or maybe I was right and you're a hopeful fool? Only time will tell, if I was wrong I'll happily admit it and eat my shoe. But I doubt I was.
