Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
Over the past few weeks I have been contemplating the idea of upgrading to the Touch Pro (right now it would cost me $199 and not alter my sero plan).
It's a pretty slick looking phone compared to the Mogul:
How many of you mogul owners have researched the Touch Pro and decided to hold off on the upgrade? Are you hoping (like me) that HTC will come out with an improvement on the TP in the latter part of the year (a guy can dream can't he?). I'm just curious. EDIT: Call me Judas! I just upgraded to the Sprint Touch Pro (on a whim). I plan on posting a full comparison review between the mogul and the TP in the near future. I will put the link up here. Yeah... I'm over the mogul now. I've moved on after only 4 days with the TP. |
Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
The Pro can do some things better than the Mogul but the only real additional feature is video out. Plus, it has no IR. I'm holding out for the next generation of devices.
|
Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
I doubt the next generation of devices will have IR.

I have a sprint touch pro which I have converted over to verizon (sprint version has more memory) The keyboard definitely takes some getting used to over the titan. Is that a deal breaker? For me no. I suggest that you go to a sprint store that has a working display model of the phone for you to play around with. The touch pro is definately faster than my mogul. The added memory on this thing shows. I like the TF3d interface as well. |
Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
I think IR for the most part is dead. I was just pointing out that the Mogul has a feature which the Pro doesn't. I don't use IR very often but it does come in handy from time to time.

Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
i had a mogul for almost a year. i was going to get the Touch Pro, and I am glad i didnt.
gotta diamond instead! its not fair to try out on-screen keyboards on the titan to see how well you could type on the diamond, because the screen is so much more sensitive. just ask people who have a TP, many say they just like having the hard keyboard if they really need it- but they use the SIP more. my battery life on my diamond is BY FAR better than my titans ever was. all i need is the combo of diamond tweak and advanced config, and those two apps have such great power management options available my phone has lasted up to three days off the charger. overheating does happen with stock roms, but flash a custom rom and play with the different radios and you wont have overheating problems anywhere near as much, if at all. it doesnt bother me whenever i feel it get a little warmer look at the facts- the next line up of htc's phone are out. they are not going to be as huge of a jump as it was from a titan to a TP. i dont know how you managed to find a deal of 199 for a tp, but i dont know what youre waiting for! |

Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
i have a mogul and have been considering a TP for a few months now. of course due to the faster processor, and better RAM, but mainly because the keyboard on my Mogul is busted, and i don't have insurance (a mistake i'll never make again) so they won't replace it. i've called Sprint and complained, and they've offered me like $300 off the TP if i upgrade, but i keep putting it off.
in reality, i've gotten used to using the stylus and the on screen keyboard. plus, my mogul, with stock ROM has done me pretty well. sure, it'll lock up on occasion, or won't have enough memory to open a program, but i don't have nearly the same amount of problems many others on this site complain about (or maybe i'm just not as big of a complainer as many of the others are). i wish i still had a working keyboard on my Mogul, and in the end, i might make my way over to the TP, but aside from the added memory and better screen, my Mogul is doing pretty well for now. i only have to soft reset maybe once every week or 2, and it's got all the programs on it that i need right now (though there are a few that i _want_ that i don't have or can't use just yet). so i'll be sticking with my mogul for a while longer, until the keyboard thing completely pisses me off and i have to throw it against a wall. i wish i would have gotten the insurance on it, but it's too late for that. i'll definitely get insurance if i upgrade to the TP! however, the heat, battery life, and its other issues haven't made me 100% optimistic about the TP. while i'm only 70% optimistic about my busted Mogul, i have it in my hand, ther'es no waiting for a replacement, it works, and i don't have to pay anything additional for it. |
Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
I went from 6700-6800 to Touch pro and personally the touch pro is the first upgrade to the 6700 the APACHE WAS bomb and i hated when they made me go to the mogul hated it from day one and nothing but problems but i get the same batt life and the touch pro is just soooo much better make the jump you wont be sorry you did

Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
Very interesting comments. I knew there had to be a lot of people like myself debating back and forth on whether to upgrade.
At this point I have 8 more months on my current sero contract, and I have my phone on the full insurance program (TEP). I already had to have my mogul replaced in June last year because the data cord port stopped working (couldn't charge or sync). I'm not hoping for this, but there is the possibility my phone could have another defect and when I go to get a replacement they give me a refurbed TP. That would be called a "forced upgrade" :) If my mogul had a faster processor and 64-128 more megs of ram, I wouldn't give upgrading to the TP a thought. |
Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
now that you mention overheating, my first TP did overheat like the diamond, but i had to get it swapped out for a different reason (chrome issues) but my second one hasnt overheated and my battery lasts about a day and a half with regular usage, mostly internet and two-three hundred text messages a day, email set to send/rec. every fifteen minutes, about an hour of phone calls a day. I suggest a spare battery but i get the same life out of my TP that i did with my Mogul.

Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
I love watching people try to convince themselves and others that they would really prefer to have their mogul over a TP. I would guess that in 97% of these cases, if you handed them a TP, they would take it and swap. ;) This is coming from a previous Mogul lover and advocate. The TP is simply and improved Mogul and the "overheating" issues everyone refers to are A) overstated and B) mostly fixed by later build date phones. The earliest batches were the ones that did seem to be prone to this.
Keep deluding yourself, but I'm not sure why you felt the need to make a thread about it - seems juvenile ... LOL |
Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
Free Sprint Touch Pro upgrade if you have a Mogul and are enrolled in the TEP plan. I think it's like 50-55ish if you aren't enrolled in TEP (TEP is $7/month on your bill). Placed my Order Monday at 7pm, will receive my Touch Pro today (Wednesday).

Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
The only thing that made my Mogul tolerable was No2Chem's page pool kernel. The memory issues were unacceptable. Can't overclock that bogus Qualcomm processor. The Apache was screaming fast. Loved it, but it wasn't just a brick, it was a CINDER BLOCK. The only place I've noticed the Mogul trumps the Touch Pro is GPS. The Touch Pro has a lag problem that is widely accepted as being a hardware issue. The Mogul with Shadowtech's Agps hack was a spot-on navigation device. The Touch Pro's keyboard is the bomb, the 5 full rows of keys is great. The VGA resolution is like night and day compared to the Mogul. You don't have to install Oxios and babysit your memory like someone with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Video out is nice, but I haven't taken advantage of it like I thought I would. But all in all, it's like Alpine- said, watching folks try to justify why they don't want a Touch Pro is funny. It's not perfect, but it's the closest thing to it right now as far as CDMA goes.

The point is it's not a minor upgrade, I had a Mogul and I'll tell you the Touch Pro is light years ahead of the mogul, except for GPS like I stated previously.

Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
Let's see, you just made my argument for me:
Runs FASTER. Has a "slightly better" camera? Ask any Touch Pro user who used to own a Mogul. Pictures taken on the 3.2 mega pixel camera of the Touch Pro are infinitely better than the Moguls 2.0 mega pixel camera. Video out is nice, but again, I don't call that a reason to upgrade, because I've only used it once myself. Exponentially more Ram & Rom, two problems that plague the Mogul. Battery life sucks on both devices in my opinion. Minor upgrade versus major upgrade is a matter of opinion I guess. I consider these points major, and believe I made a MAJOR UPGRADE in switching from the Mogul to the Touch Pro. But if you're happy with the Titan, then more power to you. |

I have seen here and on other sites that people are turning off the TF3D. Some have even set their sreen to look like their Mogul. Is the TP just not that great of a phone? |
Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
Popdog what features would you consider to be a major upgrade?
|
Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
A major upgrade for me would be a larger screen like the HD, a Tegra chip, WM7 (although the Pro can probably be upgraded to this), and WiMax capability (if of course WiMax becomes available nationwide). Hopefully I won't have to wait too long for any/all of these features.
Once again, I'm not knocking anyone who has the Pro. And I wouldn't mind having one myself, but not at the price I would have to pay without an insurance swap. I got tired of upgrading my phone everytime a new model came out just for the sake of having the latest and greatest. My Mogul has served me well and continues to do so. It hasn't become any less functional just because the Pro came out. |
Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
Biff I've had the TP since october and I love it. TF3D takes a lot of work to customize but it's worth the effort and even if you choose to turn it off you won't have any problems with available memory for winterface or any other UI you choose to use! the VGA screen is a gigantic improvement. the dpad takes some getting used to but I love this phone!

Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
If you want a great Mogul rom, No2Chem's NueRom was a God send when I had my 6800. Set the page pool kernel on it to high memory mode with no camera (4 mb page pool) and you'll get as much as 28-30 megs of start up memory. No exaggeration, No2Chem breathed new life into my Mogul, definitely made the wait for my Touch Pro much easier to handle. I floated him a $5 donation for it, and it was worth every penny.

Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
the only thing about loving the mogul and passing on the touch pro is that the tp is the moguls' replacement.so sooner or later your mogul will be replaced so go ahead a make the jump!

Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
I have both phones (I have a Sprint TP ported to verizon service & a 6800 with nueROM3) & I think I can give a fairly unbiased opinion because I still love my old xv6800 (Titan/Mogul) Running nue3 with the POS camera disabled, I think the 6800 is a killer phone & I really miss some of the features of it when I use my TouchPro.
The battery life in the TP is atrocious. I have four batteries, two cradles & a car charger. I never use the hardware KB as I got used to using Touchpal & never looked back (in portrait mode using T+ I can type insanely fast in sms-chat). As far as the hardware KB's go, I think the TP KB sucks -the keys are way too small & stiff IMHO. The virtually unlimited free memory in the TP is awfully addicting, I run Oxios 10 times a day in the 6800. I badly miss the scroll wheel & dedicated hardware keys for inet & messaging. TF3D & AEbutton + makes up for some of that, but I would love to at least have my scroll wheel back in the TP. To all you guys claiming the TP is slow/laggy etc, that maybe true of the demo your playing with in the store, but I can tell you with a few tweaks that is not the case at all. My TP is lightning fast & I get no lag whatever in TF3D witth the speed tweaks & mine is fairly well customized: http://i361.photobucket.com/albums/o...o/Screen01.png I run weather panel from a 2nd today screen mapped to the right soft key. I think the "new improved camera" is a useless POS. The auto-focus shutter lag is worse than a 10 year old digital camera. It works fine for inanimate objects, but forget trying to photograph your 8 year old daughter or your dog. If you look at the posted shots, 85% of them are dark blurry grainy out of focus shots & it's not really the users fault most of the time. The TP screen resolution is killer, but I really want a bigger screen. If I can ever get my hands on a Pro HD I would buy it in a heartbeat. Sling Mobile has never seemed to work as well in the TP as it did in my 6800, although I can hook the video out to my 7" NAV screen in my truck & show the Sling video on the NAV screen (that is VERY cool) I have had no overheating problems whatever with my TP even when running sling & GPS at the same time. I can't get s2u2 to work correctly in the TP, but PocketShield while not free works perfectly & has some very cool features. If anybody has any questions (I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff), post here or PM me & I will try to give a fair unbiased answer. ~John |
Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
I've had the Mogul, the Touch, and currently own the Touch Pro.
I can tell you that the Touch 6900 beats both the Mogul and Touch Pro in speed, battery life, and of course size (a moot point). But that doesn't matter, because the Touch doesn't have a keyboard...so...yeah. lol The battery life is NOT any worse on my TPro than it was on my Mogul. The TP is much, much faster too. Hell, the screen resolution and form factor of the phone are reason enough to switch, imo. I didn't think it'd matter until I got one. I picked up my Touch again the other day just to take a peek at it and I was literally nauseated by the screen. I wanted to puke on it. I did like the tactile feedback on the Mogul a LITTLE bit more than on the TP, but not enough to ignore the fact that the TP has a 5th row with numbers on it. As far as I'm concerned, there's no reason not to upgrade. |
Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
I think all of us will agree the Sprint version is better than VZWs. We were all following the leaked specs and pics on it wayback when GSM was the only version. We all knew the CDMA would be stripped of some things (although we didnt know VZW was gonna bend us over like they did). But even if I were on Sprint and had a year plus of a contract left I would not renew a 2yr contract and pay 200+ for the device. Granted getting more RAM is nice but damn if that isnt the most expensive RAM anyone has bought in the last several years. How many people are really going to use the TV out a lot of the time? We will play with it because it is something new and wont use it much more after that. They say it runs faster? Is that why there is all the lag in the device? My 6800 doesnt lag. But then there are certain aspects you have to keep in mind such as current CPU load and managed apps. Also, a clean and simple ROM always runs better and faster than a full loaded ROM. However, it still doesnt have FM like the Omnia got left with from its GSM version. No front camera like the GSM TP version. QVGA to VGA still is not equivalent or even comparable to HD so I dont think that really matters. Its a nice device dont get me wrong. I just cannot justify renewing a 2yr contract and having to pay that much for it when there are only minor upgrades. As others have already said, if you want to give me one, fine. If I can get one for a $50 insurance upgrade fine. But currently the TP cant do anything I cant currently do with my 6800. And if I would do the upgrade with Sprint you know I certainly wont do it for the VZW version. And that says a lot being I am on VZW.
However, with all that said, I have had in my hand both the TP and Omnia and IMO the Omnia is better than the TP. A far better camera and faster CPU. In the TP the TF3D lags. In the Omnia the Widget bar doesnt. You can drag items all over the screen and drop them, pick them up, move them again and no lag. But then again that could have something to do with the 528Mhz CPU the TP has versus the 624Mhz that the Omnia has. But the Omnia has no physical KB and although I used to have a 1st gen iPhone, I never got used to not 'feeling' the keys. Overall, do I plan on getting a TP. No. I'll stick with my 6800 and see what comes out next. For you Sprint guys, I can see somewhat why you may want to. I dont even know what the RAM/ROM specs are for the Alltel version are. |
Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
^ I can see the logic in that. If I had VZW, I wouldn't even consider the Touch Pro. Unless, of course, you got a Sprint version and brought it to the VZW network.

Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
I have a Sprint TP flashed & activated on Verizon, a co-worker of mine has the Verizon version (xv6850).
I have tweaked his phone out as much as possible for him (he knows nothing about phones or tweaking etc). If you restart both phones & then run them side by side there is very little (if any) speed difference at first & it seems that the vz version is just fine. That doesn't hold up however. As you go through the day with extended use his gets slower & slower until you really are forced to do a soft reset (same as anybody running a Titan/Mogul will be familiar with) That does not really happen at all with the Sprint version & it's plentiful memory. I have run my phone for a week at times with out restarting it. ~John |
Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
yeah i have a mogul and have actually been debating for 2 months wether to switch to the tp. I also noticed when i went into numurous sprint stores an played with the devices that they are extremely HOT in my hand! I too noticed a bit of a lag when operating through the TF3D. Then i went into a verizon store and started messing with the Omnia an was amazed at how fast it actually operated. But yeah i have to have a hardware keyboard for browsing the IE and for texting.

Re: Touch Pro? Nah. I'll stick with my Mogul.
I upgrades and I think there is a good bit of difference. I was forced into the upgrade because my niece gave my Mogul a bath, but I am quite happy with it now.

I am also waiting for the bigger screen :) that would be the killer upgrade. I am less optimistic about tegra only because so little info is ever released or even hinted about it. but the day anything solid comes out I will be thrilled! :D I am not coming from the mogul I've been holding out till CDMA got VGA resolution. that was the killer feature for me. also being able to browse any site and not get a memory error is AMAZING! but if you have your device working right and doing what you need I say stick with it till your killer feature comes along :) |

I like how the mogul has the external ant port... very useful with wmwifi
I was thinking about upgrading to the touch pro so it would be easier to watch movies on the go but i can always buy a larger memory card |
