If you ever get that let me now!!!
Such freakin huge icons .. WThuda!

Under "HKLM\Services\Power"
You can change the key ShowIcon to 1 and you will then have the battery icon in the bottom tray. I am still working to track down the other 3 icons. The HTC plugin is such a huge waste of screen space.

This didn't work for me.

I can set the registry value, but there is no visible change when I return to my home screen.

When I do a soft reset, the registry value is back to 0.

Maybe something I'm using on the Today screen is messing with it? Is there something else I have to do?

I'm using two things that change the Today screen from the default:
*HTC Touch Home Plugin.
*Threaded SMS

After you do this you must remove the HTCHomeplug icon from your desktop then it will show properly.
You are resetting the phone too fast. You have to give it a couple minutes to write the value to the registry. Be patient before rebooting. This tweak is totally independant of any plugins.
