Sprint's PPC-6800 Prototype

I have had the privilage to play with the PPC-6800. i have taken some screen captures and some crude pics taken with my 6700. i have placed them on the ftp along with a zip of the extended rom. i am hoping to have a dump of the rom by weeks end. the rom dump may take longer considering how green i am to the process.

just a few notable features:

Windows Mobile 5 AKU 3.3
qualcomm MSM7500 400 MHz processor
173.63MB of storage memory
48.54MB of Program memory

spring loaded keyboard - opens opposite direction of 6700
microSD - on the bottom between the mini usb port and IR port
collapsable stylus. - looks like this one will actually stay in the phone

keep in mind this is a prototype. the release device may have some differences.

xmind2006 04-18-2007 01:11 PM

Wow, this is hella sweet if the ROMs for the 6800 can be modified before the phone even hits the US market (officially)!

Good job Lattisimo!

Probably should create a 6800 forum section soon...

Wideawake 04-18-2007 01:12 PM

It was there a few minutes ago, but when I tried to open it I got a "corrupt zip" message.

Maybe lattisimo deleted it to re-post a good one.... [-o<

Wideawake 04-18-2007 01:17 PM

awwww aku 3.3 I hope they change that before release but I doubt it :(

lattisimo 04-18-2007 01:40 PM

sorry for the delay. the ftp didn't like my pc. I got the zip of the extended rom uploaded now. I will get ya the rom asap. thanks to everyone for there help.

Wideawake 04-18-2007 01:54 PM

Someone keeps deleting it apparently someone please pm or attach the files here.
Thx,
Mike

It's there mike... just refresh.

Unfortunately, it's pretty boring. But thanks for posting it lattsimo.

Can I request some different screen shots and pics? I don't want to overwhelm you, but if you can swing any of these it would be great:

Photos of all four edges and back
Photo of kb backlight with screen off (or covered up) and room lights off
Photo of back with battery cover off
Photo of stylus
Photo of any accessories that came with (if any)

Screen Shots:

1. Please get one of the hardware and identity tabs of settings->device information (there will be no personal info on those pages).

2. Any third party apps please try to get a screen shot of their about page showing version numbers

3. The buttons applet in settings. Would be great to see which buttons can be assigned and if there are press & hold variations.

4. The phone settings->more services tab. Anything new/different in there from the 6700? Are the roaming options the same?

5. If you can get any of the ## codes to work, please get shots of as many screens as you can. Most important ones for us would be ##DATA#, ##RTN#, ##PRL#, ##PST#, and ##DIAG#. You may need an MSL for some of those, so even if you could confirm whether they work or not would be fantastic. Note if you get screen grabs there may be some personally identifiable info you'll want to black out.

Just some general questions:

1. When connected to data, it looks like you get the mini arrows in the right-hand icon up top. Do they turn white/black as data is transferring?

2. Do you see any sign of MMS or Picture Mail?

3. Can you get some measurements of height, width, and most importantly, thickness?

4. What are the specs on the AC charger? I assume 5V 1000mA

5. What are the specs on the battery? the mah would be the most useful piece of info--probably printed on the battery itself

6. Have you compared the camera image quality to that of the 6700? I know the resolution is higher, but that doesn't necessarily mean better quality.

7. Is that a light sensor on the keyboard (above the I key)? If so, can you tell us if it works well? so if there's below a certain level of ambient light the kb backlight switches on automatically when the kb is slid out? Or do you still have to press a key on the kb to get the backlight on?

OK, probably too much already. I understand you have limited time with the device so as much as you can get to would be fantastic and much appreciated by all. Thanks for being willing to share your good fortune with the community ;)

dannzeman 04-18-2007 03:24 PM

wow, this is exciting, thanks lattisimo.

is anybody else getting that warm tingling sensation inside?

TechnoHippie 04-18-2007 03:56 PM

hmmmm....well I'm a little disapointed with some of the specs:
Windows Mobile 5 AKU 3.3 - we have 3.5 for the 6700

qualcomm MSM7500 400 MHz processor - 6700 is faster.

173.63MB of storage memory - not enough.
48.54MB of Program memory - definatly not enough.

spring loaded keyboard opens opposite direction of 6700 - i'm ok with that, and prefer it actually.

microSD on the bottom between the mini usb port and IR port - microSD? So wasted my SD from the 6600, now I gotta trash my sdmini too? bastards!

collapsable stylus. looks like this one will actually stay in the phone - well that's good news.

based on this the +'s are keyboard opening the opposite direction and a collapsable stylus? uhhhhh....

jamesus 04-18-2007 06:45 PM

I'm all geeked up now! Thanks for the help!

Questions Answered
note - pics taken with sanyo 8400. not allowed to bring cameras to work. LOL :D

1. yes the connection arrows do blacken to show idle data connection

2. no sign of MMS (Picture Mail)

3. don't have specific dimentions. nothing to measure with, sorry. but i did take some pics with a SD card and my 6700 for scale.

4. charger is the same - 5V 1A

5. battery is 1500mah

6. no real chance to compare cameras but i have snapped a couple shots but they are of the office so i can't post them and they seem to be slighly improved but that is not saying much concidering how bad the 6700 camera is.

7. yes it is an ambient light censor, you do have to press a key to initiate the light but the light appears to stay on until the device goes dormant due to inactivity.

The usb port doubles as headphone jack. in the pics of the accessories the two short adapters are for spliting it so you can plug in both at once.

if you can't see in the pics there is a scroll wheel on the upper left hand side.

i accidentaly left out the charger in the accessory pic.

i got all the screen shots i had time for. i have to do this while working unfortunatly. i have added them to the ftp.

i am still working on the rom dump. please bear with me, i know you are all anxious to get a look.

sorry the pictures are not organized better but like i said i have to do this while working. i hope when i post agian i will be able to announce the rom dump was a success.

pixelwix 04-18-2007 08:03 PM

is there a case with it? i didn't see it in there

lattisimo 04-18-2007 08:59 PM

yes, it has a case with HTC branded on the side. :)

stearic 04-18-2007 10:04 PM

Is it just me, or is anyone else not seeing these pictures?

Big D5 04-18-2007 10:32 PM

Is it just me or is anyone else underwhelmed, don't get me wrong I am sure as soon as this thing is available I will be looking for a way to get one, :) but I was hoping for more. May be some surprises, this seams like more of the same thing we already have. Well I am sure when I get it, it will be the greatest thing that ever was, till the next greatest thing that ever was comes along. :D

Big D its no biggie but I will be getting one. :) I need a new device and we are having issues dumping the dumped ROM from it so we will have to see what we can do about customs for it......

Krayziepop 04-18-2007 11:50 PM

My only question now is, has Sprint implemented Multi-NAI or not? :?

luv2chill 04-19-2007 03:09 AM

Here is a spec sheet on the MSM7500. Looks nice as it has a 400MHz core for PDA functions and a dedicated 133MHz core for phone functions.

Also has a built-in ATI graphics accelerator (who knows how powerful it is).

Not enough? I think you are misunderstanding the poster here - I'm pretty sure the poster means that these numbers are for available memory (after bootup), not total memory. Compare this to the roughly 30MB of available storage memory that you get on a stock 6700 from a carrier right now (after they apply all their junk), and you see that 174 MB of available storage memory is an enormous and very significant improvement.

Here are the unofficial specs I have seen most often for the total memory we can expect to see on the Titan (this was reported awhile back on Engadget, specifically for the Verizon XV6800):

256MB storage memory
96 MB program memory

In terms of total memory, this is double the storage memory and 1.5 times the program memory of our 6700's - sounds excellent to me. In particular, 256MB of storage memory on the Titan is a best-in-class spec for any current or near-term WM device right now that I have heard of. See the uber HTC Advantage and the vaunted upcoming i-Mate Ultimate line - all have 256MB.

I agree that there are a lot more things on my wish list that I don't see here (VGA screen and GPS come to mind). But I don't think the Titan is getting enough credit for the improvements it does have. To me, the biggest I have seen are the doubling of storage memory, upgradeability of the high-speed data from EVDO Rev 0 to Rev A, and the reportedly much slimmer form factor (given how chunky our 6700's are, this is really good news to me). As for EVDO Rev A, I have seen some promising speed test reports from people who have been able to try it using PC cards where it has been rolled out (I recall someone wrote that he found it to be indistinguishable from his DSL speed).

Based on luv2chill's very interesting info above, it also might be quicker and able to handle more simultaneous work due to the multi-core processor and built-in graphics accelerator splitting up the workload. The other notable items I have seen for the Titan are faster WiFi (g) and Bluetooth (v2 w/EDR). So we may find that "faster in every way" turns out to be a common theme for this device...

Krayziepop 04-19-2007 07:23 AM

According to the screenshots in the FTP, there is 256MB of storage memory, of which 82.37MB is used by the OS and there is 64MB of RAM - of which 15.46MB is currently allocated to the OS.

konceptz 04-19-2007 09:32 AM

I don't care what everyone else thinks, this is sexy!

If I don't switch to an N95, I'm getting this when it's released for sure.

Besides more, but not enough memory, being added...I am really digging this feature!

Have you played with the scroll wheel? How does it function? And does it perform well?

tbhausen 04-19-2007 11:37 AM

lattisimo,

Thanks for sharing this info! Could you please post the .tsk file for the default theme? I'd love to modify and use it on my 6700. You might have to zip it in order to attach to a msg.

TIA,
Todd/Indy

i have not had too much time to play with that feature much but it very convenient on the today screen and in the menus. the push click of it is very soft... feels nothing like the moto q or blackberry. i am hoping to play with it today when i get to work in a few hours. i want to test the wheel in PIE to see if it scrolls web pages or just scrolls links.

did you notice in the screen captures that PIE identifies as IE 6.0? 8)

the OK button below the scroll wheel also activates the start menu when on the today screen.

i also want to add that the direction pad on the front is a 9way! :)

the buttons on the front may take some getting used to... i tend to hit multiple buttons when trying to use the softkeys and window/ok keys. the fact that the layout is different of my 6700 is part of my problem too.

hrod928 04-19-2007 12:32 PM

Lattisimo, any way you can put the tsk file for the Yellow Sprint theme?

I have been looking for this theme but only the Moto Q has it.. and I want it for my PPC....

Thanks in advance..

lattisimo 04-19-2007 12:50 PM

i have a few progs on my thumbdrive that are going with me to work so i can get what you are wanting. i will dump the windows directory (which will have the .tks file) and hopefully get a successful rom dump today. if i have not posted by 12:00am cst then it won't be till at least sunday before i will have another try.

luv2chill 04-19-2007 01:34 PM

Told ya people would want that fugly yellow tsk ;)

Got a couple of other possibilities for the ROM dump. Come into the chatroom if you get any time today. Thanks!

TechnoHippie 04-19-2007 01:47 PM

Where is this chat room?

colonel 04-19-2007 01:52 PM

Look up, click chat

tbhausen 04-19-2007 02:09 PM

I'm gonna modify that fugly yellow task ;)

Todd/Indy

bugmenot 04-19-2007 02:26 PM

Znet had a review of the GSM Tytn and they had two pics posted that were take with the phone it did not look terrible at all.

sledgie 04-19-2007 05:16 PM

gsm tytn - different device!

gsm tytn = HERMES
cdma 6800/p4000 = TITAN

different processors, cores, etc

oysterhead 04-20-2007 02:17 AM

i'm trying to play it cool....

...but in reality I'm pretty excited for the 6800.

I'll probably buy the damn thing as soon as it hits the business channels, just like I did the 6700.

and two weeks later, i'll start wondering about the 6900.

tbhausen 04-20-2007 11:39 AM

OK, I see some "changes" to the FTP site ;)

Did the black helicopters from Sprint come swooping in?

Todd/Indy

B18DelSolT 04-20-2007 12:09 PM

Im just wondering, do any of you guys know with processor is better?

The qualcomm MSM7500 400 or which one comes in the Cingular 8525, all i know is that this processor is new.

tbhausen 04-20-2007 12:19 PM

lattisimo, I saw the comment that the files were pulled due to "job issues" over on PPH. Hope everything's OK--it's not like the photos were anything unexpected or earth-shattering.

I'd still certainly appreciate if somehow the default .tsk could be posted. All I'm really interested in is the background images.

Todd/Indy

colonel 04-20-2007 12:24 PM

I think he is alright. It was just that the background of the photos was a little incriminating.
