Unable to tether Vista to a Mogul running 3.56.651.0

I can get openSuSE 11 plus a Sprint touch to tether via USB, but it is weird how I have to do it.
On the touch I select "bluetooth" for internet connection sharing. Even though the tether is via USB if I select USB on the touch it does not work.
Now NetworkManager sees a new device (eth1 on my laptop). I create a manual connection as follows:
IP Address: 169.254.2.2
Netmask: 255.255.0.0
Gateway: 169.254.2.1
DNS Address: 4.2.2.1

I give it a connection name, establish a connection via ICS on the touch, and away it goes.

One problem I have however is that the touch will disconnect every now and then.
