Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
To those out there that have previously owned 6700's and now use the 6800. I have used a verizon 6700 for the past 1.5 years and am coming up on my new every two renewal period in a week or so. My questions is this, is it worth upgrading from the 6700 to the 6800, or will I not see enough of a difference to make it worth it? I like my 6700 running a custom WM6.0 kitchen and have become accustomed to it's occasional and random lockups, slow downs, soft resets, etc. From my understanding, the only real benefits of the 6800 would be EVDO rev A, working internal GPS with a custom kitchen, and 128MB more RAM.
With the touch pro on the horizon, I would really like to hold out for that, but I know it will be out of my price range for at least a year I would say. I'm not big on paying more than $200 or so for a phone. |

However, I got my 68 on an insurance upgrade but I also will be looking to get the Touch Pro or Diamond Pro or Raphel or whatever they call it now. But also like you, the price will be a factor. |
Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
Ya I also say its worth it. For all the same reasons weeds said but the biggest one to me was "Its a new phone".
I must confess thoe I too will be making the slide to the Pro when it comes out. |
Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
I got mine as an insurance replacement and have been very happy with it. The much larger storage memory means that putting a lot of OEMs into a custom ROM is no longer necessary, so upgrades are easier to deal with. The initial upgrade to a custom rom is a bit scarier than on the apache, but not too difficult.

Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
OH YEAH!!! That was a big one to me too. I needed something new to bring back my interest in it. THX for helping me remember that one LSME420

Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
the 6800 is worth the step up for sure, but perhaps you could hold out on them, talk to retentions about how you are looking at another carier because of (price/features/phones/whatever) and see if you can't get a little help stepping to the touch pro, or only a year contract (getting you to the pro in a year).
Good luck! |
Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
Yes, that's my big problem. I have the itch for a new phone NOW! I really, really want the touch pro, but my guess is it will take at least a year to get down to a price I am willing to pay.

Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
Sprint was running a special that mostly every one was eligible for a $150 rebate.
Maybe its still going on. Check your upgrade discount without signing on > |
Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
Well like I said earlier, I had a 67 and got the 68 as an insurance upgrade and my contract is up about the time the Diamond Pro will be out so I can use that hopefully. Why not try an insurance upgrade?

Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
one thing that was touched on but not fully thought out is the the keyboard. while the 6800 keyboard was an improvement over the 6700, however it slides out from the opposite side. the touch pro goes back to the 6700 style (kinda)
it took me a few months to totally get used to the 6800's keyboard, and I'm not looking forward to doing it again, although I will likely get a touchpro. |

It could be worse there could be no keyboard. That was a adjustment tho but not one I felt was to bad. |
Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
That is true about the KB being different in that way and needing to get used to. I am still not fully used to mine yet. I keep looking for my numbers at the top and I noticed there is no ($) dollar sign on there anymore. I used to use that a lot but oh well, I still like it.

Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
IMO, 6800 is MUCH MUCH better than my old 6700. However, you might want to consider something like HTC Diamond or whatever new model they are coming out since 6800 is technology of 2-3 years ago. As a current 6800 user, I love the phone I have that can do most of the stuff no other phone can do. Only complain is lack of memory for program. I schedule soft reset every morning and it reduced "freezing".

Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
yea, I'm a little bit of a crybaby, but that's cuz it's really dry here,(all summer) good to see green is strong elsewhere.. ;)

Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
I guess I'm afraid that if I try an insurance upgrade I would end up with a refurbed 6700 :-(

Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
I absolutely love the 6800 over my old 6700. The only complaint I have heard is from a friend who has multiple 6700's and 6800's under his control through his company. He had lost his ability to tether with the 6800 (verizon). I don't have this issue with sprint, and I am not sure if there is a fix, just something to consider.

Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
This is a 100% YES! I broke my 6700 by dropping in from a few inches high on the carpet! ( The USB Cable was in it, and it fell over the Jack breaking the USB connection off the main board ) I was so sad that day , but anyways I bought a 6800 a week later. took me a while to customize it back the way it was, but the phone is Smaller, lighter, Thinner, GPS is awesome! also, the scrolling key is nice. It has more ram, the CPU is about the same speed. But it is definetly a better phone. GO FOR IT!

6800 wifi is b/g. while the 6700 is just b.
GPS evdo rev. A gives u download speed like twice as fast in some areas. keyboard slides open much easier and smoother. ofiicial windows mobile 6 support it fits in ur pocket MUCH better. scrolling wheel is GREAT plus u can now see what all the hub-bub is about. i too miss my 6700, for some reason i just feel it was a more solid piece of equipment. (once u replaced it 3 times and finally got a good one.) but the 6800 has more features so i had to go with that. and i am very happy with the decision. |
Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
Why settle for an obsoleted phone? The HTC Diamond Pro is comming to Sprint in 9/2/08. The 6700 has a few advantages over the 6800 in term of overclocking and video playback. The keyboard slideout for the 6700 is right handed people. The 6800 on the other hand has better custom ROM support and an internal GPS receiver. The stub antenna on the 6700 also boosts radio reception.

the op has verizon and a budget.

Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
not to mention the Diamond is not going to be an insurance replacement. We all agree to get the Diamond but for now get the 68 since the Diamond isnt going to be out for a while on VZW.

Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
I'm pretty sure you could get your 6800 free when you renew since you have the 6700 already and insurance.

Posted this a while back on PDAPhoneHome:
http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-6...-thoughts.html The 6800 flat-out rocks compared to the 6700. I loved the 6700 when I had it, but now I don't miss it at all. |

Based on all the feedback, I think I am going to go ahead and get the 6800 now and keep my eye on the price of the touch pro once it comes out. Thanks everyone. |
Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
You really should make the move. My 6600 died for the umpteenth timt hree weeks ago. Assurion attempted to replace it with the 6700 and twice the unit choked on my contacts. They sent me the 6800, new and for the first time since the SX56 came on the market 6 years ago, I AM PUMPED. The device is very smart. I set up my business email on the device without any special knowledge. It found the settings on its own, over the network.
By way of comparison, having carried the 6700 for a month cummulatively, the 6800 is much better. Having used the xv6600 for nearly 3 years I have to say that the 6700 was even a step backwards from that aged device. The 6700 processor was slower than the 6600 - maybe not in the ratings, but definiteely in performance. The 6600 screen is larger than the 6700. Sorry, you were asking about comparisons between the 6700 and 6800. I too was waiting for the touch pro but Verizon is VERY slow to promise anything and I am defo glad I have the 6800. After installing TotalCommander, a file explorer for PPC's I was able to get my ring-tones without having to purchase something through Verizon. I totally recommend Total Commander or whatever it is called for ANY PPC. Let me know what you decide. I have seen new xv6800's on ebay for around $225 and I would consider that money "well spent". Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
I wouldnt. The new phones are coming out within the next two months. Wait for the rapheal. It will have a better screen and a faster cpu. You will be kicking yourself if you buy a 6800 now.

The Raphael will likely go for around $400-500 if I had to guess vs the $250 for a 6800. Too much coin for a cell phone when you could pick up a decent laptop for that much. I will have to wait until it comes down before getting that one. |

Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
I am getting a 6800 as an insurance replacement. It's going to be here on Tuesday, someone said it was bit more painful to install a custom rom on it. Is there anything special I need to do before I activate the phone to install my custom rom? I've been cooking up roms for the Apache since the kitchen was released. So, if there's anything that's much different with the mogul please let a brother know so I can start preparing before hand.
|
Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
You wil need to unlock it. The cooking and installing is the same. It also depends on your provider. If you have VZW and it has the latest release you will have to do some extra to get the GPS working. They have it blocked for VZnavigator only. Read the tutorial I have linked in my signature and you will find all you need to do the proceess.

Re: Previous 6700 owners, please read and comment
dude the mogul vs the apache is hands down the mogul... it beats the apache in every way possible... i loved my apache, but that was until i got my mogul... an now that the diamonds here my mogul is becoming long lived haha...
