A Key question

To make a long story short, I screwed up with my XV6800 (I let the Sprint customizations run) and I am receiving a new phone later today (it's almost 4 in the morning so yeah, its saturday, haha).

Here's my question,

When I get this new phone I have to call Verizon to activate it. Should I call and activate it on the stock rom and then call back a second time and get my new A key for when I upgrade to whatever rom I choose...or...should I just upgrade the rom and radio right away when I get it and then call Verizon and activate it for the first time on a new, non-stock rom. I'm leaning towards the first choice just to be safe, but if you guys have any objections please say so.

Any advice at the point would be much appreciated. Thanks again for the help.
