Any former Touch users?
I'm switching from Verizon to sprint and am debating between the Mogul and Touch.
Just curious if any of you were former owners of the Touch? Why did you switch? Now that it appears GPS mod is available for Touch, is it any more attractive? With some of the "best practices" for managing memory resources for the Mogul, is this still an issue at all? Any other advice would be appreciated. They both look like great phones. Dan |
Re: Any former Touch users?
i will own both i have had my mogul for about 8months and honestly the memory depends on what kind of user you are if like to load alot programs and fun stuff on there then memory management can be a pain i know because i amthat kinda person. i have no2chems 5065 loaded on my phone and he has done great things with the memory and wm6.1 is good on memory management. now if you dont load many programs on the phone then putting wm6.1 on the phone along with the few programs then you will be fine. but i am getting the touch because because it has twice the ram and it is thinner which is good for that running habit i have.

Re: Any former Touch users?
Touch is Garbage... Good concept bad follow through Had touch since it came out recently switched back to mogul less problems less dropped calls touch often does not ring at all default settings are set so that when you press end key several times automatically goes into airplane mode. Touch Flo is good i like the ability to scroll between apps and scrolling inside email. If you mod your 6800 right though little to no problems getting it to manuever just like the touch. Battery life also horrible Extended battery is a joke compared to 6800 extended battery. If you want an all touch screen device that does things similar to iphone wait for the Samsung instinct (June 08) definitely a more sound investment.

Re: Any former Touch users?
I just switched friday to a mogul. I absolutely LOVE the Mogul. Much more than the touch, although no complaints with the 128MB of RAM on the Touch. Keyboard, Wifi, and Rev. A can't be beat. I know the Vogue is getting Rev. A and GPS and already has it somewhat but Mogul is where it's at.

Re: Any former Touch users?
mogul/touch history: mogul for 5 months, touch for 2 months, mogul for 2 months, right now touch activated 3 days ago, im switching back to my mogul permanently tomorrow. more ram is nice but damn this whole no kb is killing me, its ok if you type a couple txt and emails in english, but if you text about 20 times a day, and reply a couple of emails in spanish the touch can be very inconvenient.

Re: Any former Touch users?
I have the touch and have had a 6700 in the past. I don't text a lot so the touch is right for me because of it's size compared to the mogul. I liked the 6700 while I had it but it was too big to be convenient for me. I know your thinking of the mogul but the 6700 isn't all that much bigger and has a similar interface. I have the spb full screen keyboard on my touch and I think it works nearly as well as a dedicated physical keyboard. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Any former Touch users?
i currently have a mogul and i use touchpal for texting 99.9% of the time. alot of my text happen during class or at home just before a call. i email a lot too and have no problem with using touchpal for that. i have quite a few programs on my phone and i run low on memory alot and i have memory management at its finest i ahve no2chems 5065 and i click the oxios button so much i dont even think about it anymore i know if i take a few of them programs off there i would have some extra memory but i like to run sevral programs at a time and i just cant do that with my mogul. also i jog alot so it is better for me to have a touch which is coming in monday.

Re: Any former Touch users?
I'd take comments like the "Touch is total garbage" with a grain of salt.
Sure it's OK to prefer to one over the other, but to call it total garbage isn't that helpful and not that truthful... |
Re: Any former Touch users?
Ive owned both and love both phones. What it came down to for me, as most Mogul users was the keyboard. If you dont care about a virtual keyboard, the Touch is great. Personally I like having a full board, even if it makes the phone a bit larger. Now tha tthe Mogul has the task mgr and GPS its a no brainer to me.

Re: Any former Touch users?
I used the touch for a couple months, then switched to the mogul, and after I bought the mogul I could not even stand to touch the touch. I hated the look and feel compared to the mogul.
with the touch, I had my stylus out all the time, and my screen protectors were getting replaced biweekly, since I switched to the mogul, I never use the stylus, and rarely even touch the screen. Some creative button mapping, and a little bit of a learning curve, and the mogul can be entirely navigated using hardware buttons. much easier and quicker then the touch. In my opinion, the mogul is far supperior, and I like being able to play music over wifi on my home network, can use it as a jukebox in my room, while leaving the music on the computer in the office. like has been said before, it boils down to personall preference. sure the memory was great, but the lack of a keyboard or xtra buttons made most software that required that kind of memory useless anyway. I rarely went over 50% usage, so I switched to the mogul. I have only recieved a low memory warning once, trying to run a speed test at speedtest.net (java based). |
Re: Any former Touch users?
Ive owned both and i decided to keep the touch mainly because of the size and i didnt like the slide out keyboard. id rather just have a touch keyboard and i do text alot. I do most of my texting one handed so when i had a mogul i rarely ever used the slide out keyboard . I actually did a whole spanish project on my touch in the class before. ( i love winmo.) I type emails and notes and word docs no prob on the touch. i use touchpal and it works great there are also many other keyboards. I think the main differences are.
Touch- Tiny size, more memory Mogul- Keyboard, bulky but manageable everything else is pretty much the same or close to the same. |
Re: Any former Touch users?
when i was buying a new phone i was deciding between the touch and the mogul. personally i think i made the right decision going with the mogul. idk if its the same for you, but i have big fingers so typing on the screen of the touch would have been very difficult for me
|
Re: Any former Touch users?
For me, the touch is like a new girlfriend and the mogul would be the wife. The touch is smaller, sexier, and kinda fun in the beginning. While the mogul, which has some issues (memory) seems to have everything you need, and just right in your hands. :) my apologies for the rotten analogy.

Re: Any former Touch users?
Well I love the size, feel, speed of the Touch.. I text like all day long, and I talk a lot on the phone. The only complain I have is the battery doesn't last that much if you are a heavy texter and phone talker like myself. So I am getting a Mogul tomorrow just to compare and see.
So the Mogul has less ram (speed issues will be the first thing i will notice as i seen in other issues, videos and friends), it has a hardware keyboard which is good so that adds the big bulky size, the battery life being better we'll see.. gps i dont need, wifi i dont need when i have Rev.A .. but being that I can use the touchscreen (keyboard and all that) and not having to slide the keyboard we'll see how that works since the mogul screen is not as good as the touch.. Typing on the Touc I'm so use to it, I'm so fast, I mainly use Polen Vista Keyboard(T+ Qwerty) or TouchPal v3 now(Full keys Qwerty) .. I'm 6'3ft.tall and its not a problem. flash on the camera is a little turn off but screw that. Phone fits anywhere Good Luck on your decision.. |

Re: Any former Touch users?
I have a Mogul and have only played with the Touch.
To be honest, I like the Touch's form factor (though the Mogul is no way near as bulky as some people make it out to be), and I like the memory it has. This weekend, I installed Resco Keyboard, Touchpal, and PCM Keyboard, since I like to type one handed when typing in URLS and quick text. (I use the slide out for longer texts and word docs). I mention this because I tried them all with the screen rotated to see if they could be used on the Touch. Yep, lol. I could type just fine with Resco Keyboard with the "I"-Whatever" skin. In fact, the keyboard size kinda reminds me of my Palm Treo. Maybe that's why I could type fast with it. (The Mogul's keyboard is noticeably larger and while it fits comfortably in my hands, it was tough to get used to at first). I type the above just to say this: I do alot of Gaming (just installed Madden NFL a few minutes ago, lol), I cannot game with the Touch. That's the deal breaker with me. The lack of buttons on the Touch rules it our for a future purchase. I was considering it for the memory, because coming from a Palm device, this memory management thing is stupid. With that said, if you don't do gaming, than try the Touch with either Resco Keyboard with the I-Skin (or whatever the name, the skins included, lol), or even PCM Keyboard. You'll be fine with that set up. WiFi is cool, but not necessary because you presumably will have Rev.A . The only time WiFi is really useful IMO is if you're in a foreign country and decide to use Skype, or if you have real ****ty Sprint signal, and want to go online. If you do enjoy gaming, I just want to be clear that the Mogul is just fine for the most part. As long as you close out all other apps, you'll be just fine. The one drawback I can think of is that some, and I mean some games require more memory than the Mogul actually has, lol! Like Atlantis Redux. It needs 20MB free just to run. I boot at around 23-24. I will install this later, but I'm not sure if the gameplay will be very responsive, we'll see. Another is Egyptian Prophecy - The Fate of Ramses. It needs 22MB free to run. But in any case, those games, and the others like them are the minority (RPG games mostly). Madden NFL 2006 runs just fine, lol! I should also note that I love my Mogul, just not the memory problems. (While I love the Touch form factor, I think the Mogul actually looks better and more professional) I will also note that there are exceptions to gameplaying with the Touch. What I mean is, games like TomeRaider have on screen buttons. I think the Pocket NES Emulator can have on screen buttons too, but don't quote me on that, lol I like SNES and Genesis. Midnight ramble over, lol! ~Journey |

With Vetvito, my Mogul's responsiveness became almost like my Palm Treo in terms of speed. That's the one thing I miss about the Palm Operating System. SPEED. I'm not used to waiting for apps to open, or if they are already open, the lag time in switching, lol! With that said bro, thank you very much for the suggestion, I appreciate it, and I was planing to update to Vetvito's new DCD based ROM, but I'll check out no2chems too. (flashing only takes 10 mins, why not, lol!) I'll say this though, and I can probably find this info in a search, but can I Restore from Backup to a new ROM? Like, If i go to no2chem, and restore with Sprite Backup, will it restore? (It's a different ROM) To get back on topic, both Window's Mobile Machines are cool in their own ways, and I suggest to the OP to go to a Sprint store, and checking them both out, or even if someone here on the boards lives near you, hook up with them and check one or the other out. Peace. ~Journey |
Re: Any former Touch users?
I've owned both the Touch and the Mogul. Bought the Mogul in November, switched to the to Touch Dec. 13 and have been lovin my Touch ever since. When I had the mogul, it gave me nothing but problems. Maybe it was a defective phone but once I received my Touch from UPS, I had a chance to compare them side-by-side and I was loving the Touch. When I had my mogul, i didn't use the hardware keyboard that much and I never used wifi so I knew it would be no problem typing on the Touch, especially since the screen is flush with the casing.

Re: Any former Touch users?
im in the same boat as many of you. I have the Touch, had it for a few months now and like it. I am strongly considering the Mogul because of the hardware keyboard and the flash camera. I figured I can install fullscreen kepyboard or PocketCM kb on the Mogul and have best of both worlds. I can use the on screen kb when i have to type something quick and hardware kb for longer texts/emails. I'm not a power user so I dont think RAM issues would be a problem. But I love my size and feel of the Touch, also I havent had any real problems with it yet so I dont know if I should take the gamble.

Re: Any former Touch users?
Thanks for all of the great info.
Sorry to post on a subject that has clearly been discussed/argued alot. Even with all of the info I am waffling back and forth. I used to have a XV-6600. It was a better PDA than it was a phone. I used to reset occasionally trying to use the phone, or it would just reset on its own when the phone rang... I was missing calls that were very important me, so I switched to a BB 8830. A year later, I need to go back to the Windows OS because I prefer it. I never used the slide out keyboard on my 6600. Maybe a larger keyboard would help (is the 6800 landscape keyboard got bigger keys than the 6600?) My 6600 was bulky, but not a big deal. I would prefer smaller if possible. I would like to use the new phone with one hand. Not too concerned about WiFi, due to EVDO. Low memory on the 6800 is a concern to me (triggering problems), but some of the comments about the after market memory managers helping in this regard offset this concern? GPS is a big deal to me. I see that it is being worked out on the Touch, and I'm guess an official version of the update will show up pretty soon (the official version for the Mogul came out within a week or two of the "hacked" version ??). My daughter briefly had a Touch, and within 3 weeks it had the blemish on the screen that others have reported. Both phones look pretty great to me. I can't help but think this may be OBE, and the Diamond or Raphael will be my next phone (but I don't want to wait !!) |

Re: Any former Touch users?
Generally speaking the dealbreakers for the Touch are either the lack of hardware keyboard or wifi. If you don't mind not having those, then there are several reasons to go for the Touch (ram being a big one of those).

Re: Any former Touch users?
I just recently got my Mogul and I love this thing! Granted I was upgrading from a Q which obviously was a BIG difference. I was also in the same delima for a few days. Touch or Mogul? I ended up choosing the Mogul due to the full keyboard. I personally just didn't like the idea of an on-screen keyboard. But also like they mentioned...you got 30 days if you change your mind on either one.

Re: Any former Touch users?
I take back my statement of touch is "total garbage" however I do tech work for sprint and have seen nothing but problems from the touch. I am only trying to help users out by steering them away from a phone that i physically have seen do what it wants... when it wants. Initially when it came out i loved the idea of the touch, touch flo was a good idea but in configuring the touch for ceartain apps I ran into many problems. It could be just me but then again i was just stating my opinion. I also have an instinct now (perks of the job) and thats is why i was saying If you are looking for a device from sprint that is predominatley touch screen but better functionality the instinct is it. I love my 6800 though and would not substitute my 6800 for anything.

Re: Any former Touch users?
I started off with a Mogul, then convinced eCare to trade it for the Touch, then when I had the Touch, I knew I'd miss the Mogul and convinced them to give me the Touch for the 200 new customer pricing instead of a straight trade.
My reasoning: I just can't get used to the onscreen keyboard only. Its great most of the time but its really a pain in the *** when you're trying to put in web addresses, type long texts or emails, etc. The screen wasn't responsive 100% of the time which would cause me to have to constantly check what was being typed on the screen. Also, the build quality on the Touch wasn't so great. Within a month of getting it, dark circles appeared on the screen. Then after I sold it to a friend, the touchscreen died entirely like three weeks later and he just swapped it for a brand new one at the Sprint store. The battery life on the Touch was unacceptable to me and I also missed having wifi. The GPS was icing on the cake but wasn't originally part of my reason for switching since it hadn't been released yet. Overall, I am considering picking up another Touch just for the sole reason that they've got Android running on it. I work around the memory problem on my Mogul pretty well and don't really have any issues. Plus since going to no2chem's 5066 ROM, my device is actually faster than the Touch was. |
Re: Any former Touch users?
My Touch has been perfect for me whereas I was having problems with the Mogul. For the most part the Mogul was a good phone, but when I have them both side-by-side, I fell in love with the Touch. And a lot of times, I used the on-screen keyboard more than the slide out keyboard on my mogul and I barely used wifi. And this was before either had GPS so that wasn't a factor
|
Re: Any former Touch users?
I was debating this as well. I ended up going with the Touch and I haven't had any problems with it so far. At first I was reluctant due to the lack of an actual keyboard but there are many programs out there to customize the touch-keyboard to your likings. I personally use Touchpal. As for speed, I like the touch's response alot better. I played around with the mogul and when you switched from portrait to landscape, it was pretty slow. As far as functionality goes, You can get Rev A and GPS and all that stuff through aftermarket ROMS. Also, the size played a factor to me, being a college student and always on the go, the lightness of the touch really helps. Hope this helps.

Re: Any former Touch users?
i had a vogue for 3 weeks, now own a mogul. best thing about the mogul: you can credibly write e-mails. (speed, screen real-estate). second best thing about the mogul: you don't need to be one of those stylus-using fruitcakes.
best thing about the vogue: RAM. second best thing about the vogue: RAM. oh, and did i mention the RAM? like the elegant form factor too but it's not worth the lack of keyboard. |
Re: Any former Touch users?
Both the Mogul and Touch are useless...
The Motorola Q is superior is all aspects! :protest: |
